Congress MLA Vinay Kulkarni surrenders, shifted to central prison
Bengaluru: Congress' Dharwad Rural MLA Vinay Kulkarni surrendered before a special court for elected representatives in the city Friday following the cancellation of his bail by the Supreme Court.
He has been remanded in judicial custody at Bengaluru Central Prison.
Kulkarni is among 21 people arrested and chargesheeted by CBI in connection with the 2016 murder of Yogeeshgouda Goudar, a BJP member of the zilla panchayat from Hebballi constituency in Dharwad district. Kulkarni is arraigned as accused number 15.
The Supreme Court granted conditional bail to Kulkarni in Aug 2021, which CBI challenged, saying he was threatening the witnesses and tampering with evidence.
Passing the cancellation orders on June 6, a two-judge bench comprising Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma observed, "It would suffice to state that there is sufficient material on record to suggest that attempts have been made by Kulkarni to either contact witnesses or alternatively, influence such witnesses. Therefore, keeping in mind the totality of circumstances, this court is of the considered opinion that the bail granted to the respondent ought to be cancelled.
Consequently, the bail granted to accused Kulkarni is hereby cancelled."
Senior special public prosecutor Gangadhar Shetty said the special court will hear the case for three consecutive days from next Monday.

Ex-CM Vijay Rupani's identity confirmed at crash site, body to be taken to Rajkot
Three days after the catastrophic plane crash, the body of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has been identified at the plane crash site after DNA testing. A large team of forensic experts have been working around the clock to identify the bodies by matching the DNA of the deceased with samples collected from their relatives. The confirmation of Vijay Rupani's identification was announced by Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi while speaking to the media this morning. The last rites of Vijay Rupani will be done in Rajkot, where his family will decide on the cremation procedure. Rishikesh Patel, Gujarat Health Minister, speaking to IANS, said the state government will facilitate all the arrangements after the family decides on the funeral proceedings. 'Gujarat CM Bhupendrabhai Patel and Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi visited late Vijaybhai Rupani ji's residence today and told the family members that his DNA has been confirmed. His family will take call on last rites and final stage preparations for cremation. After consultation with them, all arrangements will be done,' he said. Reenaben Patel, a legislator, also confirmed that Vijay Rupani's body will be taken to Rajkot, where a lot of well-wishers and supporters of the former CM have been waiting to pay their tributes and bid a final goodbye. Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani was onboard the ill-fated Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, operating as flight AI171 from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, that crashed minutes after take-off, killing 241 of the 242 people on board. Only one passenger had a miraculous escape from the flight, while all others were killed. Former CM was flying to London to meet his wife and daughter. Notably, the DNA-matching is a complex medical and legal process and involves layers of verification. It's only after an elaborate set of tests and confirmation of DNA samples, families are called up and asked to collect the bodies of their loved ones. In some cases, the analysis is repeated due to insufficient DNA material. The identification process takes up to 72 hours, depending on the condition of the remains.

‘Forgive me, papa': Bharatpur woman dies by suicide; names husband and in-laws in video over dowry, conversion harassment
1 2 ALWAR: A 25-year-old woman died by suicide at her parents' house in Bharatpur district on Saturday after allegedly facing persistent harassment over religious conversion and dowry demands from her husband and in-laws. The deceased, identified as Manja, left behind a haunting video message naming her husband Laxman, mother-in-law Ramdei and brothers-in-law Arun and Rohtash as responsible for her death, police said. Before taking the extreme step at her parental home in Talimpur village of Bharatpur district, Manja recorded an emotional video plea calling for severe punishment, including death penalty, for her alleged tormentors. In the video, she detailed the harassment she faced regarding religious conversion from Hinduism to Christianity and dowry demands. "Forgive me, Papa! Laxman, Ramdei and Rohtash are responsible for my death. They tortured me a lot for religious conversion and dowry," Manja said in the video. The victim's father, Uday Singh Thakur, filed a complaint at Bayana police station naming multiple family members of his daughter's in-laws, who are residents of Padisal Bassi village in Khairtal-Tijara district. He revealed that Manja had married Laxman Rajput on Jan 21 and despite providing dowry according to their means, the in-laws demanded additional items including a Bullet motorcycle and ₹1 lakh in cash. Approximately a month before her death, Manja had informed her father about pressure to convert to Christianity, with pastors allegedly visiting her in-laws' house. Following physical and mental abuse upon her refusal, she had returned to her parental home. In her final message, Manja specifically requested the return of the ₹10-12 lakh spent on her wedding and appealed for the harshest possible punishment for her alleged tormentors. She expressed concern about her uncle Tarachand, whose whereabouts remain unknown. On the morning of her death, Manja exhibited signs of distress and retreated to her room. Around 10am, her family discovered she had died by suicide, allegedly hanging herself with her scarf. Authorities confirmed that they recovered a video from her mobile phone, which has become a crucial piece of evidence in the ongoing investigation. According to Dy SP Krishnaraj Singh, Manja was found hanging in her room. The authorities conducted a post-mortem at Bayana sub-district hospital before releasing the body to her family.
