Time of India3 days ago
Kolkata: Bengal Police on Friday announced a special helpline — 9147727666 — for residents working in other states facing police harassment. Police said they will perform necessary checks and coordinate with police from other states.
TOI had reported that Bengal Police received nearly 1,400 such applications and verified 1,000 of them. The verifications have led to release of migrant workers from detention.
In a statement on X, Bengal Police said, "We are receiving reports from various sources that many people from Bengal working in other states are facing various problems and becoming victims of harassment. However, those who are affected, or their family members, do not have a clear idea about whom to inform about these problems or how to do so."

We will verify each piece of information and coordinate with the concerned state to take necessary action," they further said.
The step coincided with police in Bengal securing the release of a migrant worker in Gurgaon.
Najmul Sardar, 23, from Bongaon in North 24 Parganas, was having lunch with his parents on July 20 when cops dressed in plain clothes allegedly barged in, dragged him out of his rental accommodation in Badshahpur in Haryana's Gurugram and bundled him into a police van, according to his relatives.
Badshahpur cops said they suspected Sardar and six others of being illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. The young migrant worker was released from police custody on Friday after intervention from the Bongaon police station in Bengal. Sardar's family members said he had furnished both his Aadhaar and voter ID before the police.
According to his relatives, police, while detaining Sardar, said they were taking him for document verification.
"They said it would take 30 minutes. But nearly four days passed and there was no information of his whereabouts," they said.
The situation took a turn for the worse when two of Sardar's co-workers visited the police station to inquire about him and were also reportedly detained. Sardar's family then reached out to relatives and local netas in Bongaon who alerted Bongaon cops.
"His parents broke down in despair. We were informed immediately, and we wasted no time in taking action," said Sheikh Sabir Ali, Sardar's cousin.
Bongaon police said, "Our team visited his home, gathered all legal documents and contacted officials at Badshahpur police station. Once we presented the necessary proof, Haryana police were satisfied and Sardar was released."

Bangladeshi immigrant police officer among 4 shot dead in New York rampage

A lone gunman went on a rampage at a posh Park Avenue office building in New York, shooting dead a Bangladeshi immigrant police officer and three others before killing himself. The shooter entered the building housing the world's largest multinational investment company, BlackRock, on Monday evening (local time), carrying an M4 rifle, shot police officer Didarul Islam, and a woman in the lobby, according to police. He took a lift to the 33rd-floor office of a real estate company that owns the building, and after firing at random, killing two people, shot himself dead, police said. One of the victims was a man and the other a woman. Mayor Eric Adams, a former police captain, choked back tears as he announced the death of Islam, who he said was an immigrant from Bangladesh. "He was saving lives," he said at a news conference. "He was protecting New Yorkers." Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said 36-year-old Islam had two sons, and his wife was expecting another child. "He made the ultimate sacrifice, shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise that he made to this city," she said. The gunman, Shane Tamura, 27, had a "documented mental health history," Tisch said. The motive behind the shooting and why he chose to go to the real estate office on the 33rd floor is unknown. The shooting stirred eerie recollections of another high-profile killing barely eight months ago, just four blocks away. The CEO of a health insurance giant was gunned down outside a hotel by a young man who accused the health industry of profiteering and callousness in a manifesto. The site of Monday's shooting, the 44-storey building on Park Avenue in the heart of Manhattan, houses BlackRock, which manages $11.5 trillion in assets. When the shots were fired around 6:30 p.m., the building and surrounding areas went into a lockdown, as police searched for the gunman and checked for bombs, immediately after the shooting, police rushed Islam away from the building and tried to perform CPR on the side of a road before an ambulance rushed him to a hospital, where he died. Later, people from the buildings were let out, walking with their hands up past police in tactical gear. Tisch said that Tamura lived in Las Vegas and drove cross-country to the city, arriving before the rampage. Police said they found some medicines, a revolver, ammunition, and the case for the M4 rifle in his black BMW, she said.

New York officer killed in Manhattan shooting was Bangladeshi immigrant whose wife was pregnant

The New York police officer killed in a mass shooting in a Manhattan skyscraper on Monday (July 28, 2025) was described by the city's mayor and police commissioner as a heroic Bangladeshi immigrant who saved lives while "putting his life on the line." A gunman opened fire on Monday (July 28, 2025) inside a midtown office tower, killing five people, including Officer Didarul Islam, 36, before fatally shooting himself, officials said. "We lost four souls to another senseless act of gun violence, including a member of the New York City Police Department, Officer Islam," New York Mayor Eric Adams told reporters in a press conference late on Monday (July 28, 2025). Adams said the officer was a three and a half year veteran of the police department. "He was saving lives, he was protecting New Yorkers," Adams said. "He loved this city, and everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person that believed in God." Adams said he met the officer's family on Monday night. "I told them that he was a hero, and we admire him for putting his life on the line," the mayor added. Islam was married, had two young sons, and his wife is pregnant with a third child, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in the press conference. "He put himself in harm's way. He made the ultimate sacrifice — shot in cold blood," she said. Islam was working on a paid security detail in the building when the shooting occurred, the commissioner added. Such details allow "companies to hire officers in uniform to provide extra uniform security," she said. Excluding Islam, 42 federal, state, county, municipal, military, and U.S. territories officers have died in the line of duty in the first half of 2025, according to preliminary data from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
