Bangladeshi immigrant police officer among 4 shot dead in New York rampage
The shooter entered the building housing the world's largest multinational investment company, BlackRock, on Monday evening (local time), carrying an M4 rifle, shot police officer Didarul Islam, and a woman in the lobby, according to police.
He took a lift to the 33rd-floor office of a real estate company that owns the building, and after firing at random, killing two people, shot himself dead, police said.
One of the victims was a man and the other a woman.
Mayor Eric Adams, a former police captain, choked back tears as he announced the death of Islam, who he said was an immigrant from Bangladesh.
"He was saving lives," he said at a news conference. "He was protecting New Yorkers."
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said 36-year-old Islam had two sons, and his wife was expecting another child.
"He made the ultimate sacrifice, shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise that he made to this city," she said.
The gunman, Shane Tamura, 27, had a "documented mental health history," Tisch said.
The motive behind the shooting and why he chose to go to the real estate office on the 33rd floor is unknown.
The shooting stirred eerie recollections of another high-profile killing barely eight months ago, just four blocks away.
The CEO of a health insurance giant was gunned down outside a hotel by a young man who accused the health industry of profiteering and callousness in a manifesto.
The site of Monday's shooting, the 44-storey building on Park Avenue in the heart of Manhattan, houses BlackRock, which manages $11.5 trillion in assets.
When the shots were fired around 6:30 p.m., the building and surrounding areas went into a lockdown, as police searched for the gunman and checked for bombs, immediately after the shooting, police rushed Islam away from the building and tried to perform CPR on the side of a road before an ambulance rushed him to a hospital, where he died.
Later, people from the buildings were let out, walking with their hands up past police in tactical gear.
Tisch said that Tamura lived in Las Vegas and drove cross-country to the city, arriving before the rampage.
Police said they found some medicines, a revolver, ammunition, and the case for the M4 rifle in his black BMW, she said.

Pahalgam Attack: NIA Launches Probe into Killing of Mastermind in Srinagar Encounter
A team of NIA sleuths on Tuesday launched a probe into the killing of the alleged mastermind of the Pahalgam terror attack and his two associates in an encounter with security forces near Srinagar, officials said here. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) team arrived at the Police Control Room (PCR) in Srinagar early Tuesday (July 28, 2025) for the identification of the bodies of the three terrorists, they said. In a major breakthrough, the Army's elite para commandos on Monday gunned down Sulieman alias Asif, the alleged mastermind of the April 22 attack, along with two of his associates, in an encounter at Mulnar in Harwan area near Dachigam National Park here. The security forces launched a surprise action, codenamed 'Operation Mahadev', following a technical signal indicating the use of a satellite phone that was used by the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack. 3 Terrorists Killed in J&K Encounter Near Srinagar The other terrorists killed in the action have been identified as Jibran, who was allegedly involved in the Sonamarg Tunnel attack last year, and Hamza Afghani. As many as 26 people, mostly tourists, were shot dead by terrorists at Baisaran meadows in Pahalgam, which prompted the armed forces to launch Operation Sindoor on May 7 against the terror infrastructure in Pakistan. The bodies of the slain terrorists were brought from the encounter site to the PCR here late Monday. The NIA team is taking witnesses in batches of two to three people "for ensuring a cent per cent confirmation that the slain terrorists include Sulieman Shah", officials said. Meanwhile, the operation is ongoing as intelligence inputs have suggested the presence of another group of terrorists in the area, officials said. Jibran was allegedly involved in the terror strike at the Sonamarg tunnel project at Gagangir in October last year. Seven people, including a doctor, were killed in the attack. An M4 carbine rifle, two AK rifles and other munitions were seized from the site of Monday's encounter.

Gunman Who Killed 4 At Manhattan Office Building Was Targeting NFL Headquarters, Mayor Says
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday that a gunman who killed four people at a Manhattan office building was trying to target the headquarters of the National Football League but took the wrong elevator. Investigators believe Shane Tamura was trying to get to the NFL offices after shooting several people in the building's lobby but accidentally entered the wrong set of elevator banks, Adams said in interviews on Tuesday. Four people, including an off-duty New York City police officer, were killed. Police said Tamura had a history of mental illness, and a rambling note found on his body suggested he had a grievance against the NFL over an unsubstantiated claim that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy. He had played football in high school in California nearly two decades ago. The note claimed he had been suffering from CTE — the degenerative brain disease that has been linked to concussions and other repeated head trauma common in contact sports like football — and said his brain should be studied after he died, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. It also specifically referenced the National Football League, the person said. A motive has not been determined but investigators were looking into, based on the note, whether he might've specifically targeted the building because it is home to the NFL's headquarters. The shooting took place at a skyscraper that is home to the headquarters of both the NFL and Blackstone, one of the world's largest investment firms, as well as other tenants. A message sent to Blackstone employees, and obtained by The Associated Press, said a staff member at the private equity firm was killed in Monday's shooting, but their identity was not immediately released. Surveillance video showed the man exiting a double-parked BMW just before 6:30 p.m. carrying an M4 rifle, then marching across a public plaza into the building. Then, he started firing, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, killing a police officer working a corporate security detail and then hitting a woman who tried to take cover as he sprayed the lobby with gunfire. The man then made his way to the elevator bank and shot a guard at a security desk and shot another man in the lobby, the commissioner said. The man took the elevator to the 33rd floor offices of the company that owned the building, Rudin Management, and shot and killed one person on that floor. The man then shot himself, the commissioner said. The building, 345 Park Avenue, also holds offices of the financial services firm KPMG. The officer killed was Didarul Islam, 36, an immigrant from Bangladesh who had served as a police officer in New York City for 3 1/2 years, Tisch said at a news conference. 'He was doing the job that we asked him to do. He put himself in harm's way. He made the ultimate sacrifice,' Tisch said. 'He died as he lived. A hero.'
