Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas boys' lacrosse player Diego Salazar is the Miami Herald's High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.
The junior scored seven goals to lead the Raiders to the FHSAA state championship with a 13-4 victory over Ponte Vedra. It marked the fourth state title for St. Thomas Aquinas in boys' lacrosse.

St. Thomas Aquinas' Sherice Newton is the Broward Flag Football Player of the Year
Sherice Newton knew a little bit about how to play quarterback in flag football even before her senior season. But she hadn't formally been given the keys to St. Thomas Aquinas' offense until this season. The Raiders valued Newton for her leadership qualities and felt she was the best choice to fill their vacancy at the position. The decision paid off. Newton turned into one of the most prolific quarterbacks in the state while leading St. Thomas Aquinas back to the regional finals in Class 3A. And so, Newton, a senior who is headed to FIU to study biochemistry, is the Miami Herald's Broward County Flag Football Player of the Year. Newton completed 369 of 469 pass attempts this season for 3,937 yards and threw 73 touchdown passes with only nine interceptions. She also showed off her quickness when she kept the ball, running for 336 yards on 45 carries. But one of her biggest improvements was her decision-making and patience as a passer. 'I used to just roll out and throw it, but this year I learned to stay in the pocket more and I played much better than I had in the past,' Newton said. The Raiders graduated all of their quarterbacks after the 2024 season and Newton was one of two possible options to take the reins this season. An injury made Aquinas' decision simple and Newton took it and ran with it, leading the Raiders to one of their best seasons in school history. 'I feel like being a senior they felt like I could be a leader to the younger players,' Newton said. 'I had good timing and I just got the ball to my receivers.' Aquinas finished 16-2 before losing to Homestead in the playoffs. Newton feels like it's a matter of time before the Raiders bring home a state championship. 'They just have to stay together and when times get tough not blame each other, just stay together and push through as a team,' Newton said.

Belen, Columbus, Carrollton coaches are Dade Track and Field Coaches of the Year
It had been close to two decades since the Belen Jesuit track and field team had won a state championship. Longtime rival Columbus hadn't waited nearly as long to win a boys' title, but didn't want to share the crown this time. And for Carrollton's girls, it was a brand new experience when they stood on the top step of the podium for the first time ever. The coaches of those three programs all led their respective squads to state championships this season. And so, Belen's Victor Arrieta, Columbus' Danny Areces and Carrollton's Dylan Hermelee are this year's Miami Herald Miami-Dade County Track and Field Coaches of the Year. Hermelee wins the Girls' Coach of the Year honors after leading Carrollton to its first team state championship. For Hermelee, it's his second coaching honor within the same school year as he was also the Dade Girls' Cross-Country Coach of the Year this past fall after leading the Cyclones to a fourth-place finish at state. There was no settling for anything short of first place in track season, and every point was needed. With a group of nine competitors overall which was led by individual state champions Arianna Garcia and Grace Aldrich, Carrollton edged Montverde Academy by half a point to capture the Class 2A state title. On the boys' side, Arrieta and Areces split the Boys' Coach of the Year honors. Arrieta led the Wolverines to their first state championship since 2007 as their squad found the balance needed to edge some of the state's best teams in Class 3A. Arrieta had watched prior Belen teams come close, but just short to a title in recent years as the Wolverines finished second in 2021 and 2023. Belen's distance runners, led by Tiago Socarras and Marcelo Mantecon, propelled the team to the top spot. A season after sharing the team title, Areces helped guide the Explorers to an outright victory in Class 4A. Columbus' sprinters such as Alec Cruz, Shaddai Carter, Bryce Fitzgerald and Zamarion Lawson, under the guidance of veteran coach James Hardwick, led the way. But the Explorers' depth in the field events with top performers such as javelin state champion Remington Goins made a huge difference.

Finals Fever: Fans at home support Panthers in Stanley Cup Finals opening game
Dana Ross danced in line with her friends at the Amerant Bank Arena concession stand, wearing a custom 'Ross' Florida Panthers jersey autographed by players in Sharpie across the large '44' on her back. She's been a fan of the Panthers for 31 years, she said, and her family were original season ticket holders back when the team first played in Miami in 1993. 'Ever since I was a little girl, I loved going to the games,' she told the Miami Herald before the first game of the Stanley Cup Finals' opening game between the Florida Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers. 'I cried like a baby last year when we won. So, anything now is just a bonus!' The story among many of the Panthers' long term fans, wearing sombreros lined with stuffed rats and Stanley Cup silver chains, is the same. They lined up in 'Barkov' and 'Ekblad' jerseys outside of the arena before 7 p.m., eagerly waiting to enter despite the fact that the first game of the playoffs would take place over 2,500 miles away in Edmonton, Alberta. Before puck drop, they cheered as each of the starting Panthers flashed on the jumbo-tron. Screams erupted for goalie Sergei Barbovsky, while the boos were deafening for Oilers star Connor McDavid. After the first period with the Panthers up 2-1, the energy on the concourse skyrocketed. A DJ played hit pop and rock songs in the 21+ Jameson Bar, the line for a Mister Softee sundae in a Barkov helmet stretched for three sections, and 'go, cats!' echoed all the way into the bathrooms. 'This is my first time at a watch party, my first time in this kind of atmosphere,' lifetime fan Mike Whitt told the Miami Herald. 'It's so much fun watching the game this way, such a great time. With playoff tickets being so expensive, this is a great way to do it. Now I definitely want to come again.'
