
Just when you thought things couldn't get weirder - a rare black moon is rising this weekend
It's expected in the early hours of Saturday morning, at around 2:06 a.m. EDT, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory. But you don't need to wake up at 2 a.m. to try to catch it.
The black moon — which was named fairly recently and is not an official astronomical term — is different than many of the well-known moons of the year, such as the pink, harvest, or blood moons.
Unlike the other celestial spectacles, you can't see this one.
That's because the black moon is a special kind of new moon. One of the moon's eight phases, a new moon occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, making it invisible from Earth.
The black moon marks this invisible phase, with the illuminated side facing the sun and the dark side facing Earth.
There are two kinds of black moons: seasonal and monthly. This is a seasonal black moon, which happens once every 33 months or so. Whereas, the monthly black moon refers to when two new moons rise during a single month, with the second considered to be the black moon.
In February, the black moon is even less frequent than the seasonal black moon, occurring when there is either no new moon or no full moon. That happens only every 19 years, according to Time and Date.
To make matters even more of a headache, the term 'black moon' has also been used to describe the third new moon in a season of four new moons, according to Earthsky. But, that's also often known as a blue moon. So, it may be truthful to use the phrase 'once in a black moon' now.
The phrase 'once in a blue moon' dates back to 1528, according to MIT. A blue moon is also the second full moon in a calendar month.
So, what's so special about the black moon if you can't even see it and it shares its dates with a blue moon?
First, the absence of the moon's light will make stargazing even more dazzling. Often, light from the moon can be strong enough to block out incoming meteor showers.
With new moons, the moon has even more of an effect on tides because the sun and Earth are in alignment. The moon's gravitation pull is the primary force that drives ocean tides.
The next seasonal black moon is expected on August 20, 2028, and the next monthly black moon will happen on August 31, 2027.
If you really want to see something similar to the black moon, try to catch a solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse is slated for August 12, 2026, but you'll need to buy plane tickets to Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Portugal, or Russia to see it.

Nasa's Webb telescope has found a new moon around Uranus. The tiny object is only about 10 kilometres wide and is the 29th addition to the family of moons around the planet. Scientists think it was able to hide for so long not only because of its small size but also its relative faintness. That meant it could lay undiscovered during other observations, such as Voyager 2, which flew past the planet around 40 years ago. There could many other of the objects lying in wait around the planet, still undiscovered, researchers suggest. 'No other planet has as many small inner moons as Uranus, and their complex inter-relationships with the rings hint at a chaotic history that blurs the boundary between a ring system and a system of moons,' said Matthew Tiscareno of the SETI Institute, a member of the research team, in a statement. 'Moreover, the new moon is smaller and much fainter than the smallest of the previously known inner moons, making it likely that even more complexity remains to be discovered.' All of the moons around Uranus are named after characters from Shakespeare and Alexandra Pope. The new one is part of a system that orbits inside the largest moons Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon, for instance. But the new one is yet to receive a name. It will get one when it is approved by the International Astronomical Union, which chooses names and designations for objects in space.

Deadly tropical virus could reach London due to rising temperatures, scientists warn
A deadly tropical virus could become a growing threat in London and other major European cities due to climate change, scientists have warned. Dengue fever, which is spread by the Asian tiger mosquito, has been moving steadily northward in Europe since first appearing in Albania in 1979. A new study published in Global Change Biology found the mosquito has accelerated its spread in France, moving from about four miles per year in 2006 to 12 miles per year in 2024. 'Extrapolating from the results, it is estimated that the mosquito could establish itself in northern France within a decade, from where it could easily reach London, which is already climatically suitable for hosting this vector,' said Andrea Radici of Montpellier University, the lead author of the study. The research team used climate and environmental modelling alongside two decades of data to track the movement and expansion of Aedes albopictus, the scientific name for the Asian tiger mosquito. They found that while southern Europe has long been suitable for the species, large cities further north, including London, Vienna, Strasbourg and Frankfurt, are now climatically favourable for the mosquito. The study warns that recent outbreaks of dengue in Europe could signal a broader trend, with the risk of transmission expanding from Mediterranean coasts into western France and northern Spain. Although most people infected with dengue recover, the disease can cause severe complications, including internal bleeding, sudden drops in blood pressure and even death. The World Health Organisation (WHO) said the number of dengue cases has increased significantly in recent decades. There were 14.6 million cases reported to the WHO in 2024, compared to 505,430 cases in 2000. The disease is now endemic in more than 100 countries, the WHO said. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control recorded 304 cases of dengue in 2024, compared with a cumulative total of 275 cases over the previous 15 years. Scientists believe this sharp increase may indicate that dengue is on the path to becoming endemic in parts of Europe, fuelled both by climate change and rising levels of international travel. Europe has been warming twice as fast as the global average since the 1980s, according to the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service. The EU monitoring agency says that 2024 was the hottest year on record both globally and in Europe, which experienced its second-highest number of 'heat stress' days.

Fishermen and experts stunned after rare orange shark caught
A nurse shark with a striking orange appearance, caused by the rare skin condition xanthism, was caught off the coast of Costa Rica. Xanthism, which results in excessive yellow or golden colours due to a lack of red pigmentation, has never before been observed in cartilaginous fish in the Caribbean. The six-foot-long shark, captured near Tortuguero National Park, also exhibited traits of albinism, including distinctive white eyes. While such conditions typically make sharks more vulnerable to predators, this discovery challenges assumptions about the survival rates of affected animals.
