Genesis unveils new electric off-road SUV
Hyundai Motor Group's premium brand reveals X Gran Equator Concept ahead of 2025 New York auto show
Hyundai Motor Group's premium brand Genesis unveiled the X Gran Equator Concept, a first electric off-road sport utility vehicle, at the Genesis House New York on Tuesday, as the carmaker continues to expand its portfolio.
'The X Gran Equator Concept is an exercise in harmonizing contrasts, combining elegance with ruggedness, and the spirit of exploration with refined comfort,' said Luc Donckerwolke, chief creative officer of genesis.
'It represents the orchestration of true off-road competence and uncompromising luxury, designed to enable the discovery of the world's most breathtaking landscapes.'
Under Genesis' design philosophy of athletic elegance, the off-road SUV concept model features a long hood, sleek cabin, dark wheel-arch cladding and 24-inch beadlock wheels to highlight its adventure readiness.
According to Genesis, the name of the new concept car was inspired by Equator, which refers to the finest stallion in the world of Arabian horses, to reflect the vehicle's elegance, performance in extreme conditions and sense of grace.
Although the X Gran Equator Concept has not been confirmed for production, Genesis noted that its distinctive design language, such as the integrated roof rails and split-opening tailgate, illustrate the brand's future design potential.
Genesis on the same day also revealed a full-scale GMR-001 Hypercar, the brand's high-performance car developed to compete in motor sports, building on its performance vision declared in March last year.
Genesis pointed out that the GMR-001 Hypercar, inspired by the brand's Magma performance lineup, combines aerodynamic precision with sculptural fluidity, balancing elegance and aggression.
'The GMR-001 Hypercar, like every race car, is a sculpture designed by the constraints of efficiency and performance — combined with the design DNA of Genesis — the brand with the Two Lines,' said Donckerwolke.
'The livery is an orchestration of the tension and balance of the distinctly Korean character of the brand, with gradients from Magma orange to dark red emphasizing the high temperature of the powertrain. And the color gradients from light to dark of the Magma writing in Hangeul is an optical Doppler effect that expresses the glorious sound of the V8 Twin Turbo engine in motion.'
With the debut of the life-sized GMR-001 Hypercar as a prototype, Genesis will continue getting ready to compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2026 and the IMSA SportsCar Championship in 2027
Both the X Gran Equator Concept and the GMR-001 Hypercar will be on display at the upcoming 2025 New York International Auto Show scheduled to open to the public starting Friday at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

Genesis to expand into Western Europe to tap luxury EV demand
Hyundai Motor Company, Korea's largest automaker, announced plans to expand its luxury brand Genesis into France, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands with a lineup of electric models, accelerating its push into the European market, where traditional local luxury brands still dominate. The announcement was made on Friday during the 24 Hours of Le Mans — one of the world's largest motorsports events — with Hyundai Motor Group Chief Design Officer Luc Donckerwolke and Xavier Martinet, head of Hyundai Motor and Genesis' European operations, in attendance. Genesis is set to begin deliveries in the four new markets starting in early 2026. The initial lineup will include the electric sport utility vehicle GV60, the electrified version of the GV70 SUV and the upcoming GV80 electric coupe. Details regarding sales channels and strategies for each country have yet to be disclosed. 'Our entry into these important markets is a pivotal moment for Genesis. We are moving now to deepen our long-term presence and commitment across Europe,' said Martinet. 'This is the most significant market expansion since we launched in Europe in 2021 and is the start of our next phase of measured, strategic growth and sporting brand direction.' After entering Germany, the United Kingdom and Switzerland in 2021, Genesis is now expanding into all major electric vehicle markets in Western Europe. According to SNE Research, Europe accounted for 20.9 percent of global battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle sales between January and May, the largest share outside China, with 26.2 percent year-over-year growth during the period. Hyundai Motor Group has rapidly increased its presence in the region's EV market with compact, affordable models such as Kia's EV3 and Hyundai's Kona Electric and Casper Electric, achieving 45 percent year-over-year growth between January and April. However, the luxury EV segment continues to be led by established local brands like Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi, presenting recognition challenges for newer entrants like Genesis. Hyundai's expansion seeks to tap into potential openings as local automakers adjust the pace of electrification amid concerns over demand and profitability. The company expects the luxury EV segment to grow further, potentially comprising half of Western Europe's luxury car market by 2027 as new internal combustion engine vehicle sales are phased out by 2035. As part of efforts to showcase its technological capabilities, the brand plans to expand its presence in global motorsports through its Genesis Magma Racing team, established in late 2024. It aims to enter the Hypercar class of the International Automobile Federation's World Endurance Championship, one of the most prestigious endurance racing series in the world, next year.

Hyundai Rotem nears W8.5tr K2 tank deal with Poland
Hyundai Rotem, the railway and defense contractor under Hyundai Motor Group, is expected to seal a second K2 tank export deal with Poland worth 8.5 trillion won ($6.3 billion) as early as this month, marking a major follow-up to the initial contract after a three-year gap. According to media reports Friday, Hyundai Rotem has completed major discussions with PGZ, Poland's state-owned defense company, covering key aspects, including the number of tanks, and is now working out detailed arrangements necessary for the final signing. Unlike the first agreement, which specified the initial delivery of 180 tanks out of 1,000 units, the second contract will detail ways for local production and technology transfer in Poland, as well as the additional number of tanks. To bolster its credibility and expedite the negotiations for the second deal, the company reportedly showed its commitment by delivering nine K2 Black Panther tanks in addition to the 12 units in March. This brings the total delivered to 133 units, leaving 47 tanks remaining to fulfill the first contract. On Thursday, the Polish Army's 15th Gizycko Mechanized Brigade announced on Facebook, 'The K2GF Black Panther tanks are now with us,' sharing photos of 9 tanks unloaded at the port of Swinoujscie. The brigade emphasized that these tanks marked another step forward in the modernization of the Polish military. Although no exact timeline has been given for finalizing the second agreement, industry watchers observe that the process is running behind earlier market expectations, which had targeted the fourth quarter of 2024. It was primarily due to extensive negotiations with the Polish government on local manufacturing and technology transfer, along with South Korea's political tensions sparked by former President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law declaration. 'In the case of K2PL models, which will be produced in Poland, there are a number of items on the table, ranging from the procurement of tank components, cost management, maintenance and repair procedures to the scope of technology transfer,' said an industry source on condition of anonymity. Despite the overdue deal, industry insiders indicate that newly elected President Lee Jae-myung's drive for the nation's defense industry will accelerate negotiations with the Polish government. 'It is too soon to tell the impact of the new President,' the source added. 'However, as we now have the defense control tower (which had been inactive for seven months), our hope is to see bilateral talks between Korea and Poland on bolstering defense ties.' During his presidential campaign, Lee highlighted defense as a key strategic industry for propelling national growth, committing to specific support measures to become a 'top four global defense power' after the US, Russia and France.
