Yahooa day ago
Its Monday, August 11 and the Twins (56-61) are in the Bronx to begin a three-game series against the Yankees (62-56).
Zebby Matthews is slated to take the mound for Minnesota against Will Warren for New York.
Given up for dead following the trade deadline, the Twins have actually won each of their last two series most recently taking two of three from the Royals in Minneapolis. Yesterday, Luke Keaschall homered in the eleventh inning to walk off a 5-3 win for Minnesota.
The Yankees, meanwhile, could not build on their series win over the Rangers to begin last week as they dropped two of three at home to the Astros over the weekend. Yesterday, they lost 7-1 as Max Fried struggled allowing four runs over five innings. The offense did Fried no favors totaling just three hits against Jason Alexander and three Houston relievers.

Tigers in jeopardy of losing former Yankees star Gleyber Torres

Tigers in jeopardy of losing former Yankees star Gleyber Torres originally appeared on The Sporting News Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres entered the 2024-25 offseason with some questions about his future. It was evident that he wasn't going to return it to the New York Yankees, but many questioned where he could land, or what his deal might look like. Throughout parts of Torres' career, he seemed to be one of the better second basemen in baseball, and he's proven that again during the 2025 campaign. Barring anything drastic happening over the last few months, Torres now looks to be in a great position to get paid this winter, and that could impact the Tigers. MORE: According to there's even a chance they could lose him. noted that it won't be easy for the Tigers to keep him in town, something the front office has to consider. 'Batting .271 with a career-high .368 on-base percentage and 13 home runs, Torres has had quite the bounceback year since joining Detroit on a one-year, $15 million deal. He appears to be a good long-term fit for the first-place Tigers, but he's likely to seek a multiyear contract that probably won't be cheap. Plenty of other clubs could use a good second baseman, so it won't be easy for the Tigers to keep Torres, but they'll probably try,' they wrote. Depending on who the Tigers call up over the next few weeks to months, or even over the next year, it might not be too big of an issue to lose Torres. However, losing a right-handed bat with a 120 OPS+, when the team is already lacking right-handed juice, would be very tough to justify.

Yankees Ridiculed for This $90M Mistake as Part of 'All-Overpaid Team'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Kicking the New York Yankees while they're down is a favorite pastime for the fans of 29 other Major League Baseball teams. Though they got a win over the Minnesota Twins on Monday night, August has been an embarrassing month for the Yankees to this point. But there have been things to lament all season, even before this latest slide began in earnest a couple of weeks ago. There was a long stretch this season when the Yankees couldn't figure out their infield, and that stemmed from the lack of a true third baseman, combined with ex-Yankees second baseman DJ LeMahieu's contract. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 13: DJ LeMahieu #26 of the New York Yankees reacts after scoring on a 2-RBI single hit by Oswaldo Cabrera #95 during the sixth inning against the Tampa Bay... NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 13: DJ LeMahieu #26 of the New York Yankees reacts after scoring on a 2-RBI single hit by Oswaldo Cabrera #95 during the sixth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium on May 13, 2023 in the Bronx borough of New York City. MoreLeMahieu was designated for assignment over a month ago, but Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller was still rubbing salt in the wound Tuesday. Miller concocted an "All-Overpaid Team" for Major League Baseball this season, and he named LeMahieu as the top second baseman on his list. "We'll say this much in LeMahieu's defense: He was considerably more productive in 2025 than in 2024, when he posted a .527 OPS in 67 games between both starting and finishing the season on the IL," Miller wrote. "But improving from a .527 OPS to a .674 OPS wasn't enough to save LeMahieu's job once it became clear Jazz Chisholm Jr. needed to move from third base back to second base. The Yankees released LeMahieu a few days after that move, and more than a month later, still no one has felt compelled to give the 37-year-old another shot." LeMahieu's time in New York was a confounding mixed bag. He was great from 2019 to 2021, but his six-year, $90 million extension was an abject disaster, as New York is still on the hook for his $15 million salary next year. Do the Yankees have bigger fish to fry than worrying about overpaying LeMahieu all these years later? Of course. But if this season ends poorly, it will be just one more impediment as they try to get off the mat. More MLB: Red Sox's Roman Anthony Matches Ted Williams' 86-Year-Old Franchise Record

Do Yankees, Mets Skids Have New York Baseball Headed For Empty October?

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. After being at the forefront of the bidding war for Juan Soto and the largest contract in Major League Baseball history, the pair of New York teams looked to both be headed back to October this season. That was until the past two weeks, the New York Yankees entered Tuesday 3-7 in their last 10 games, and the New York Mets are 1-9 in the same span, and on a seven-game losing streak. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JULY 04: Juan Soto #22 of the New York Mets scores a run during the third inning ahead of the throw to J.C. Escarra #25 of the New York Yankees... Escarra #25 of the New York Yankees at Citi Field on July 04, 2025 in New York City. More Photo byAfter a strong start to the season that saw the Yankees 35-22 as the calendar flipped to June, the Bronx Bombers have not seen a winning record in any month since. August is on pace to be the Yankees' worst month, and with two teams, the Cleveland Guardians and the Texas Rangers, within three games of the final spot, the Yankees are entering crunch time. Much like their American League counterpart, the Mets started strong, but have faltered of late, falling to the final wild-card spot in the National League. A strong July has helped the Mets fend off the field for now, but in the second half of the season, the Mets are 8-13 entering Tuesday. After being buyers at the trade deadline, including revamping their bullpen with the addition of Ryan Helsley and Tyler Rogers, the Mets have stumbled through August with a 1-8 record during the month. The Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals are knocking on the door, with both teams being within three games of the Mets. The Yankees have the best chance to keep playoff baseball in New York, as they have the fourth-easiest schedule remaining, while the Mets have the ninth-hardest. Both teams were streaking early, but with a little under two months to play, they find themselves in danger of taking an early vacation.
