Economic independence key to eliminating gender discrimination: Telangana Dy CM Bhatti

HYDERABAD: In a strong endorsement of women's economic empowerment, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Thursday declared that the core mission of the 'Praja government' is to ensure economic independence for women, which he said is the key to eliminating gender discrimination.
Speaking at the Gender Equality Conference organised by the Women's Commission at Nizam College, the deputy CM laid out the government's multi-pronged strategy to uplift women through targeted welfare and entrepreneurial initiatives. 'When women are economically strong, the entire state becomes financially strong,' he said.
He revealed that the Congress government has already disbursed `21,632 crore in interest-free loans to women's self-help groups (SHGs) in the first year alone and aims to circulate `1 lakh crore through SHGs within five years with the goal of transforming one crore women into crorepathis (millionaires).
Highlighting the government's ambitious renewable energy initiative, Vikramarka announced plans to generate 2,000 MW of solar power in partnership with SHGs. These groups will be assisted in setting up power plants, with the government guaranteeing purchase of electricity through pre-signed utility agreements, he said.
'This model — where women's groups generate solar energy and sell it to the state — hasn't been implemented in any other state,' he asserted.
Recalls his student days
A proud alumnus of Nizam College, Vikramarka reminisced about his student days (1982–84), staying in Room No 36, and the transformative experience of studying at one of India's premier institutions. He recalled fellow alumni like former chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy and ex-Speaker Nadendla Manohar, and noted how many of his peers are now accomplished scientists in the US. He promised to take up the current issues facing Nizam College with Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and expressed his desire to return to the college for a full-day visit.
ABVP activists block deputy cm's convoy
HYDERABAD: Mild tension prevailed at the Nizam College here on Thursday when the ABVP members blocked the convoy of Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who arrived at the institution to participate in the Gender Equality Conference organised by the Women's Commission. The student activists demanded immediate release of fee reimbursement amounts and scholarships that have been pending for several years. Students vowed to continue their protests until the government clears the pending reimbursements and scholarships.

‘Veg-only' poster in JNU hostel sparks protest

NEW DELHi A poster reading 'Veg only, everyone please co-operate' pasted inside Jawaharlal Nehru University's Mahi-Mandavi hostel has triggered sharp political tensions within the students' union. The three Left Unity post-holders of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) accused the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) of pushing 'divisive food segregation' and attempting to 'saffronise' the university's culture. In a joint statement, JNUSU President Nitish, Vice-President Manisha, and General Secretary Munteha said: 'In another disturbing ploy to divide the amity among the student community, the President of Mahi-Mandavi Hostel (from ABVP) has segregated the seating arrangements for vegetarian and non-vegetarian boarders.' The student leaders said they had approached the senior hostel warden, who claimed he was unaware of any such measure. 'The senior warden categorically stated that no such divisive measure had been brought to his knowledge prior to our report. He assured that an inquiry committee will be constituted to fix responsibility for this violation of hostel norms,' they added. ABVP's JNUSU joint secretary Vaibhav Meena defended the poster, saying it was put up by students observing Sawan, a month considered sacred by many Hindus. 'Vegetarian students have never objected despite being made uncomfortable. But now that the Left is asserting its stance, we will too,' he said. The Left Unity leaders countered: 'Let us be very clear, JNU has no history of food policing. This attempt to divide students is not an isolated event but part of a larger, concerted effort by ABVP to saffronise the campus and disrupt its inclusive culture.' University officials did not respond to queries from The Hindu.

CM for supply of solar energy to Secretariat

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy instructed the Energy department officials to take steps to meet the power requirements of the State Secretariat, the seat of State administration, through solar energy. He directed the officials concerned to coordinate with the Roads & Buildings department for making arrangements in this direction. The Chief Minister gave the directions during a review meeting on the Energy department on Wednesday. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka was also present. Mr. Revanth Reddy reminded the difficulties faced by vehicle owners for parking their vehicles in the Secretariat under the hot sun in summer. Steps should be taken to set up solar rooftop sheds which could serve the twin purposes of harnessing energy and providing shade to vehicles. Solar fencing should also be set up around the Secretariat. He wanted the officials to take steps to provide power supply to all tribal habitations under Indira Solar Giri Vikasam scheme on a war footing. Officials should ensure that the scheme covered 2.1 lakh tribal farmers in three years providing solar powered pumpsets required for cultivation in six lakh acres.

Blocking quota Bills amounts to injustice to BCs, warns Bhatti

HYDERABAD/KAMAREDDY: Asking the BJP-led Union government not to block the two pending BC reservation Bills, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Monday said the entire Telangana Cabinet, along with MLAs and MLCs, will visit New Delhi from August 5 to 7 to press for approval of the two Bills. One Bill seeks to implement 42% reservation for BCs in local body elections, while the other relates to quotas in education and employment. Stating that blocking the Bills would amount to injustice to the BC community, Vikramarka urged the Union government to approve those without delay. He was speaking at a public meeting in Tandur constituency after laying foundation stones for several development projects, including the proposed Young India Residential School. He also handed over new ration cards to the beneficiaries on the occasion. Addressing concerns about delayed Indiramma housing payments, Vikramarka said payments will be cleared weekly, based on the progress of construction. He criticised the previous government for neglecting the housing sector and claimed that the Congress government had revived housing construction under the Indiramma scheme. 'Across the state, 4.5 lakh houses are being built at a total cost of Rs 22,500 crore, with 3,500 houses allocated per constituency,' he said. Vikramarka added that ration card modifications had resumed after a gap of 10 years. 'Of the 1.15 crore families in the state, 95 lakh now have ration cards and receive 6 kg of free rice per person,' he said.
