Gorgeous Scottish golf club offers preview play of new Tom Doak-designed golf course
Old Petty – named for an old church adjacent to the property – joins Castle Stuart Golf Links on the property, which the Canadian-based Cabot acquired in 2022. The original Castle Stuart layout was designed by Gil Hanse and Mark Parsinen, and that layout is ranked by Golfweek's Best as the No. 6 modern course in Great Britain and Ireland. It also ranks No. 48 among all courses outside the United States.
The walking-only preview play on Old Petty ends Sept. 30 and is open to anyone with an existing tee time on the original Castle Stuart course. The greens fee for preview play is 190 pounds (Or about $255 U.S.), compared to 330 pounds ($445 U.S.) to play the original course. Bookings for rounds in 2026 on Old Petty will open this year.
'Old Petty, guided by the vision of Tom Doak, will be a remarkable addition to the Highlands' golfing landscape,' Cabot founder Ben Cowan-Dewar said in a media release announcing the preview play dates. 'Its design will harmonize beautifully with the natural surroundings, truly elevating the land it occupies. ...
'Our goal is to create unforgettable memories in magical places, and there are few places in the world more awe-inspiring than the Scottish Highlands.'

Now that's a big rock — what we know about Cristiano Ronaldo's gigantic engagement ring
Cristiano Ronaldo has proposed to his longtime girlfriend with a massive diamond engagement ring. The footballer's girlfriend, Argentine-Spanish model Georgina Rodriguez, announced the engagement in a Monday post on Instagram. She posted a picture of her hand with long, manicured nails — and a huge ring. Rodriguez captioned the post, "I do. In this and all my lives," written in Spanish. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Georgina Rodríguez (@georginagio) The central oval-shaped diamond was flanked on either side by two smaller diamonds. Anya Walsh, a jewelry specialist at London-based retailer 77 Diamonds, told The New York Times that she estimates the ring's weight was around 35 carats and costs at least $5 million. Ronaldo and Rodriguez have been dating since 2016. They met when Ronaldo walked into a Gucci store in Madrid, where Rodriquez, now 31, worked as a retail assistant. They share two daughters and raise them with Ronaldo's three children from a previous relationship. Their son, a twin of their younger daughter, was stillborn at birth. Ronaldo, 40, is a Portuguese football player who is the captain and forward of the Portuguese national team and Saudi Arabia's Al-Nassr Football Club. Before joining Al-Nassr, he played for numerous other football clubs, including Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Juventus.

Museums saw 15 per cent spike in attendance after Canada Strong Pass introduced
OTTAWA — National galleries and museums across the country have seen a 15 per cent increase in attendance so far this summer, after the federal government introduced free or discounted admission through the new Canada Strong Pass. The Canada Strong Pass, which took effect on June 20 and is available until Sept. 2, offers free national museum admission to children 17 and under, and a 50 per cent discount for those aged 18 to 24. The pass also offers free admission to national parks and sites maintained by Parks Canada. Hermine Landry, spokesperson for the office of the minister of Canadian identity and culture, said attendance in July was up 16 per cent over last year at the Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum. The Canada Agriculture and Food Museum has seen attendance spike by 24 per cent and the National Gallery of Canada has seen an increase of two per cent, she said. The Canadian Museum of Nature has seen an increase of 12 per cent since the launch of the pass, while the Canada Science and Technology Museum has seen a 13 per cent increase and the Canada Aviation and Space Museum has seen a four per cent increase. Some provincial and territorial museums and galleries are also taking part in the program, and the Manitoba Museum reports that its July attendance was up 11 per cent over last year. "We are proud to see the enthusiasm for Canada, especially among families, as discounts on activities and travel can lead to substantial savings," Landry said. "More than ever, we must stand together: The increased attendance at iconic sites across the country is proof of that." Through the Canada Strong Pass, Via Rail is also offering free fares for children 17 and under if they are accompanied by an adult, and a 25 per cent discount for travellers who are 18 to 24 years old. Landry said more than 36,000 Via Rail bookings have been made with the Canada Strong Pass. The Montréal to Toronto route was the most popular, with over 13,000 bookings made, she said. Megan Hope, a spokesperson for Parks Canada, said in an email that free admission is expected to increase the number of people visiting Canada's national parks. However she said statistics for 2025 will not be made available until after the season has ended. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 12, 2025. Is Texas becoming new Alabama? The Athletic says Longhorns becoming CFB's premier program
For over a decade, the Alabama Crimson Tide ruled college football. Coach Nick Saban seemingly got all the best players en route to an astounding six national championships. But the college football power structure always shifts eventually. Has Texas replaced Alabama on top of college football's highest perch? The Athletic says the Longhorns have. Texas' first year in the SEC was kind of a watershed moment for Texas coach Steve Sarkisian and the program he's building in Austin. Only Georgia prevented Texas from running through the league last year. A conference that was supposed to humble the Longhorns made them stronger. Now, armed with one of the best quarterback recruits of all time, Sark looks to complete the mission at UT and win the national championship ... either this year or next. But with a title or not, it appears to Ralph D. Russo of The Athletic that Texas is the new CFB super power. "Texas is becoming the new Alabama. No, that doesn't mean the Longhorns are going to rattle off a half-dozen titles in the next decade. But this is the season Texas puts its staying power on display. There is always another draft pick. There is always another All-American. The talent conveyor belt is fully operational — and well-funded. The days of stumbling as a 12-point favorite at home appear to be over. Much like Kirby Smart did when he left Saban and Alabama to take over at Georgia, Sarkisian implemented the Bama blueprint at a school with more resources and easier access to talent than Saban's old school, building a program to rival the Tide." - Ralph D. Russo of The Athletic After serving as Saban's offensive coordinator, Sark has brought the Saban way to Texas. No one could evolve with the changing climate in college football better than Saban for over a decade. Much of Texas' success can be attributed to how Texas implements NIL. It's just just having money. Texas leads the nation in managing NIL. The Texas One Fund has at least 20 sponsorship partners, including Texas-based Benchmark Bank. 'The area to differentiate any university is, how many outside — call it true NIL or whatever you want to call it — how many of those opportunities are out there for student-athletes? And having the best model not only is good for your university and you can recruit better and win, but it's also good for kids to get opportunities. So our plan is to continue on that whole for-profit space, to get as many opportunities as we can for our student-athletes in the for-profit brand space.' - Patrick 'Wheels' Smith, president of Texas One Fund The Saban way also turns players that might think they've "made it" by getting a scholarship and NIL funds to play at a program like Texas into players obsessed with winning that hate losing. 'Excellence is exhausting, but it's worth it. (The players) see the success of their peers, and they're like, I want that, you know? The Outland trophies, the Thorpe awards, the All-Americans, the first-round picks, the draft picks, the College Football Playoffs. The on-the-cusp-of-a-national-championship. I want that. So how do I get there? It's pretty simple. The only thing I just keep looking for is, is there a complacency? Because complacency is, that'll get you. And we're fortunate. We've got no room to be complacent, because we haven't won the thing yet, you know?' - Texas coach Steve Sarkisian To put the crown jewel on his achievement in Austin, Sark needs to win a title. Based on its first preseason No. 1 ranking in program history, it could happen this year. Follow us on X/Twitter at @LonghornsWire.
