Emergency's dark days still haunt Attappady's Manappan

The Hindu25-06-2025
In Attappady's Kavundikkal hamlet, 80-year-old tribal leader Manappan still shudders at the mention of the Emergency. Fifty years have passed since its imposition on June 25, 1975, but the memories of his incarceration remain etched in his mind and evokes a deep sense of dread.
Manappan's arrest was a direct result of his affiliation with Communism, an ideology that put him in the crosshairs of the authorities. He was arrested from his hamlet along with fellow tribal leader Bhinnan, a companion in his struggles who would eventually succumb to the passage of time.
Manappan's voice cracked as he recounted his 18-day ordeal in Palakkad District Jail. The darkness of the prison cell was matched only by the brutality of the regime, leaving scars that still linger decades later. 'Those days were painful,' he said.
His passion for Communism ignited in 1967 and propelled him to the forefront of Attappady's tribal land rights movement. His defiant chants of 'Inquilab Zindabad' and 'Engal bhoomi engalukku, aaru vannalum tharamatte' still echo, a reminder of his unyielding spirit despite facing repeated imprisonment.
Manappan's eyes lit up as he recalled his association with Communist stalwarts such as E.M.S. Namboodiripad and E.K. Nayanar, who had sought refuge in Attappady during their underground days. A warm smile spread across his face, reflecting the deep respect and admiration he had for those leaders.
He is now leading a retired life along with his wife, Panchi, at Kavundikkal, Attappady. 'From our interactions with Manappan, we could gain a lot of insight not only into the lives of the tribespeople, but also into the social transformation that the tribal community witnessed over the years,' said T. Satyan, a former teacher at Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Attappady.
Manappan reminisced about his childhood in Attappady, where only two Tamil schools existed. He carried sand from the riverbank in a bag to use as a writing surface. The school uniform included a Nehru cap and students enjoyed mid-day meals under K. Kamaraj's Chief Ministership. A unique aspect of school life was a barber's regular visit to cut the students' hair every two months.
His life took a dramatic turn when Attappady was hit by landslides and cholera in the early 1960s. Leaving behind his job as a hostel warden, he returned to his hamlet to help his community. His memories of the region's malaria-infested past were stark. He was grateful for the Italian doctor who brought relief to Attappady by spraying DDT in the late 1940s.

P Vasu: He fought for freedom, and against Emergency

P Vasu might be 102 but still moves about his house in Cheruvannur in Kerala's Kozhikode district with the help of a walker, reads at least two newspapers a day, and watches television news with great intent, trying to keep himself informed of what's happening in the country. P Vasu: He fought for freedom, and against Emergency Born in January 1923, Vasu got a whiff of nationalistic sentiments early when his father took him to hear Mahatma Gandhi when the latter visited Kozhikode in 1934. He was just 11 then, but by the time he was in his late-teens in 1942, Vasu found himself leading an agitation by the Congress in his native Cheruvannur on the sidelines of the Quit India movement. That year, he was arrested and sentenced by a judge to three-and-a-half months in jail , where he was tortured. In 1943, Vasu had to go underground in erstwhile Madras for over nine months after the police attempted to put him in preventive custody in connection with a case of a bomb threat on Farook bridge. 'I had nothing to do with it but because I was jailed previously, my name was on the police list and I had to go into hiding. It was an extremely tough period,' Vasu told HT over phone. After Independence, Vasu joined the socialist party and was given its membership by stalwart Jayaprakash Narayan in Kozhikode. His strong beliefs in socialist ideals earned him the nickname among locals -- 'Socio Vasu'. In 1951, the then Madras presidency, under which the Malabar region in Kerala fell at the time, offered 10 acres of land in Wayanad and ₹2,000 to several freedom fighters including Vasu. But he refused to accept. 'Jayaprakash Narayan told us that we fought for the country's freedom, not for financial gains. Accepting it would have gone against my socialist ideals,' said Vasu. In 1975 during the Emergency, Vasu was beaten by the police for picketing the local post office. He spent 23 days at the Kozhikode Medical College hospital for treatment. In 1997, on the 50th anniversary of independence, Vasu was felicitated in Delhi by then President KR Narayanan. Is he happy about the present state of the country? 'No,' came the reply. 'It is not the India we envisioned in 1947. We are losing our secular ideals,' he said.

Governor's statement exposes ‘insult' faced by him during convocation: K.N. Nehru

Municipal Administration and Water Supplies Minister K.N. Nehru on Thursday alleged that Governor R.N. Ravi was functioning like an agent of Nagpur (the headquarters of the RSS), instead of discharging his duties as the Governor of a State. Mr. Nehru said the Governor's customary speech on the eve of Independence Day clearly exposed the 'insult' he had faced during the convocation of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, where a student refused to receive her PhD certificate from him. 'The Governor, without any political decency, had used his Independence Day message to level allegations against the government,' he said. 'The fascist BJP regime at the Centre has sent poisonous snakes in the name of Governors to States ruled by parties other than the BJP. Mr. Ravi sought to create a lot of problems for the democratically elected government, and we crushed his designs through the Supreme Court,' he said. Mr. Nehru said Union Home Minister Amit Shah would 'laugh' at Mr. Ravi's claim that the Union government had allocated lakhs of crores of rupees to Tamil Nadu, as the Union Budget did not even have a reference to the State. 'Tamil Nadu's economy has become very strong, and has achieved 11.19% growth after a gap of 10 years under the DMK-led government. He [Governor] is desperate because the DMK's alliance partners have announced their decision to boycott the tea party hosted by him on the occasion of Independence Day,' Mr. Nehru claimed. He added that the per capita income in Tamil Nadu was the highest in the country, and that the State had succeeded in creating more women entrepreneurs and start-ups.

TN Guv expresses concern over issues including women's safety; DMK hits out at Ravi

Chennai, Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi on Thursday expressed concern over issues including 'rise' in sexual offences against women and children, saying "our sisters and daughters are afraid and feel insecure in coming out of their house." TN Guv expresses concern over issues including women's safety; DMK hits out at Ravi In his address on the eve of the 79th Independence Day, the Governor also rued the "educational and social discrimination of the poor and marginalised, alarming rise in suicides" and fast spreading drug abuse among youth. The ruling DMK reacted sharply, saying enough official data has already been shown to disprove Ravi on these issues and charged him with making accusations to malign the party-led government. "In recent years, there is a sharp increase in the incidents of sexual offences, specially POCSO rape cases in our State. According to the official data, there has been over 56 per cent increase in POCSO rape cases in 2024," Ravi said. The Raj Bhavan released the excerpts of his address. Incidents of molestation of women have 'jumped' by over 33 per cent, he claimed. "Our sisters and daughters are afraid and feel insecure in coming out of their house. We know that the nation is striving towards women-led development with increasing participation of women in all aspects of our national life," he said. In Tamil Nadu, women are enterprising and aspirational. "As a Chancellor of the State Universities, I am witness to the rise of women in education. In most Universities, women gold medallists far outnumber the men. However, if our sisters and daughters are scared to come out of their houses to pursue their dreams and enterprise, it will cast a dark shadow over our future. Unprecedented rise in sexual offences and violence against women is unacceptable, deplorable and must be curbed with a heavy and harsh hand," he added. Responding, DMK senior leader and state Municipal Administration Minister, K N Nehru, recalled an incident on Wednesday where a student at a state-run university refused to accept the certificate from him during the convocation ceremony, accusing him of acting against TN's interests. Referring to a Tamil saying, Nehru indicated the Governor was frustrated over the episode. "On the other side, DMK's allies have boycotted the Independence Day tea party hosted by him. So he has issued the statement out of frustration," Nehru said in a party statement. "Many allegations made in the statement have been countered already with facts," he said, referring to Ravi's remarks made in the address. Ravi lacked 'decency' since he made allegations in the address meant for the Independence Day, he said. Tamil Nadu topped the socio-economic indices and had even reached a 11.19 per cent growth rate. "The governor has made lies and allegations. It is useless to present facts to counter them. Because he is not functioning as a governor..." Nehru said.
