India's retail inflation falls to over 6-year low of 2.1 pc in June

Hans India14-07-2025
India's inflation rate based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) eased further to 2.1 per cent in June this year compared to the same month of the previous year. This is the lowest level of retail inflation since January 2019, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Statistics on Monday.
There is also a drop of 72 basis points in retail inflation during June, in comparison to the corresponding figure of 2.82 per cent for the previous month of May.
There was a decline in the prices of food products during the month, with the annual food inflation rate at -1.06 per cent. There was also a sharp fall of 205 basis points in food inflation in June 2025 in comparison to May 2025. The food inflation in June 2025 is the lowest after January 2019, according to the official figures.
The significant decline in inflation during the month is mainly attributed to the decline in prices of vegetables, pulses, meat and spices.
The prices of vegetables declined by as much as 19 per cent during the month, while the prices of pulses came down by 11.76 per cent. The prices of meat and fish also fell by 1.62 per cent, while spices turned cheaper by 3.03 per cent. The decline in prices brought food inflation into the negative zone for the first time.
Meanwhile, the RBI has also revised its inflation outlook for 2025-26 downwards from the earlier forecast of 4 per cent to 3.7 per cent, Reserve Bank Governor Sanjay Malhotra said recently.
CPI inflation for the financial year 2025-26 is now projected at 3.7 per cent, with Q1 at 2.9 per cent, Q2 at 3.4 per cent, Q3 at 3.9 per cent, and Q4 at 4.4 per cent.
He pointed out that Inflation has softened significantly over the last six months from above the tolerance band in October 2024 to well below the target, with signs of a broad-based moderation. The near-term and medium-term outlook now gives us the confidence of not only a durable alignment of headline inflation with the target of 4 per cent, as exuded in the last meeting, but also the belief that during the year, it is likely to undershoot the target at the margin.
While food inflation outlook remains soft, core inflation is expected to remain benign with easing of international commodity prices in line with the anticipated global growth slowdown, Malhotra explained.
The sharp decline in inflation has enabled the RBI to go in for a 50 basis points cut in the repo rate from 6 per cent to 5.5 per cent to spur growth in the economy, in the monetary policy review last month.
The RBI also announced a 100 basis point cut in the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR), from 4 per cent to 3 per cent, to be implemented in four tranches of 25 bps each. The step is expected to inject Rs 2.5 lakh crore into the banking system, boosting liquidity and supporting credit flows.
These measures are aimed at spurring growth as easing inflation has given the RBI headroom for a soft money policy that reduces interest rates, making loans for business investments and consumer spending cheaper and also more easily available.

Banks to clear cheques within few hours from October 4, says RBI

The RBI will introduce a new mechanism from October 4 for clearance of cheques within hours of being presented to banks, reducing the current time period of up to two working days. Cheques will be scanned, presented, and passed in a few hours and on a continuous basis during business hours. The clearing cycle will be reduced from the present T+1 days to a few hours. Cheque Truncation System (CTS) currently processes cheques with a clearing cycle of up to two working days. To improve the efficiency of cheque clearing and reduce settlement risk for participants, and to enhance customer experience, the RBI has decided to transition CTS from the current approach of batch processing to continuous clearing with 'on-realisation-settlement'. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued a circular for introduction of Continuous Clearing and Settlement on Realisation in CTS. "It has been decided to transition CTS to continuous clearing and settlement on realisation in two phases. Phase 1 shall be implemented on October 4, 2025 and Phase 2 on January 3, 2026," it said. There will be a single presentation session from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Cheques received by the branches shall be scanned and sent to the clearing house by the banks immediately and continuously during the presentation session, RBI said. "For every cheque presented, the drawee bank shall generate either positive confirmation (for honoured cheques) or negative confirmation (for dishonoured cheques)," it said. During Phase 1 (from October 4, 2025 to January 2, 2026), drawee banks will be required to confirm (positively/negatively) cheques presented on them, latest by the end of the confirmation session (7:00 PM), else those will be deemed to have been approved and included for settlement. In Phase 2 (from January 3, 2026), the item expiry time of cheques shall be changed to T+3 clear hours. Giving an example, the RBI said the cheques received by drawee banks between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM will have to be confirmed positively or negatively by them by 2:00 PM (3 hours from 11:00 AM). Cheques for which confirmation is not provided by the drawee bank in the prescribed 3 hours shall be treated as deemed approved and included for settlement at 2:00 PM. RBI further said that on completion of settlement, the clearing house will release the information of positive and negative confirmations to the presenting bank. "The presenting bank shall process the same and release the payment to the customers immediately, but not later than 1 hour from successful settlement, subject to usual safeguards," it said. RBI directed banks to make their customers adequately aware of the changes in the cheque clearing process. Banks have also been asked to be in readiness to participate in continuous clearing in CTS on the prescribed dates.

Bond market maintains caution ahead of weekly auction, gives up early gains

Government bonds gave up almost all the gains by the end of the trade on Wednesday due to caution ahead of the weekly auction on Thursday. The weekly auction of government bonds is scheduled to be conducted on Thursday, since markets are closed on Friday on account of Independence Day. The yield on the 10-year benchmark government bond softened by 3 basis points during the day on the back of short covering, said dealers. It settled at 6.48 per cent, against the previous close of 6.49 per cent. 'There was short covering by primary dealers and state-owned banks in the morning,' said a dealer at a primary dealership. 'Later, in the day there was sell-off due to speculation that RBI has been enquiring about tomorrow's (Thursday) auction which led to caution,' he added. In the absence of expectations for further RBI open market operations, buyers remain reluctant to step in. Market participants said that the underwriting fee might be higher than the previous week. 'The demand at the auction will determine the course of government bond yields,' said a dealer at a primary dealership. 'There is caution, but broadly the auction should sail through. The underwriting fee might be higher than usual,' he added. The government plans to sell ₹50,000 crore of 2030 bond, and ₹13,000 crore of new 2055 bond. The cut-off yield on treasury bills at the weekly auction on Wednesday rose by 2 basis points to 3 bps across tenures as surplus liquidity fell to ₹2.62 trillion, against ₹3.97 trillion in the previous week's treasury bill auction. Overnight money market rates also rose with WACR settling at 5.49 per cent, near the repo rate of 5.50 per cent.
