After His Big Movie With Margaret Qualley And Aubrey Plaza Received A 6-Minute Ovation At Cannes, Chris Evans Revealed Why He Didn't Attend — And The Reason Is Actually Really Sweet

Yahoo25-05-2025

This past week was the Cannes Film Festival, and as you may have seen, one of the big films that everyone seems to be talking about is the comedy-mystery Honey Don't!
Directed by Ethan Coen, the film follows a detective investigating a series of mysterious deaths and their connection to a local church. It stars Margaret Qualley, Aubrey Plaza, and Chris Evans, with Charlie Day and Billy Eichner making up the supporting cast.
The film premiered at Cannes on Friday, receiving an impressive six-minute standing ovation from viewers. Both Margaret and Aubrey attended the premiere, along with Charlie and Ethan — while Chris was noticeably absent.

Well, now we know why, and the reason is seriously melting my heart.
It turns out, Chris skipped the event to celebrate his mom Lisa's 70th birthday. He made the revelation today on Instagram while congratulating the cast and crew on the Cannes premiere.

"I wish I could've been with my incredible cast and filmmakers at Cannes, but it was my mother's 70th birthday and there are some things you just can't miss!" he said.
Chris then gave a warm shoutout to the cast and crew next to a photo of them on the Cannes red carpet. "Congrats everyone!!" he added.
As many know, Chris is a big family person, having come from a large family of six with two sisters, Carly and Shanna, and a brother, Scott. He talked about their "deep connection" in a 2017 interview with Esquire, saying, "In my own life, I have a deep connection with my family and the value of those bonds. I've always loved stories about people who put their families before themselves. It's such a noble endeavor. You can't choose your family, as opposed to friends."
And he started building one of his own in 2023 when he married his longtime girlfriend, Alba Baptista.
Knowing the value he places on family, people thought it was seriously so sweet how he still showed up for his mom amid such a big and important career moment.
"That tracks," one Reddit user said of Chris's reason for missing Cannes. "He prioritizes and values family over everything else."
"I get it," said another. "His mom is having a milestone of reaching 70."
Aww, I hope they had a good time. Happy Birthday, Lisa, and congratulations on your film, Chris!
