GRS honours Merotai land pledge

TAWAU: Local authorities have identified a suitable site for the construction of a new Multipurpose Hall in the Merotai area here. Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah President Brigadier General (Rtd) Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah said this follows the announcement by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor on Feb 16 regarding the allocation of RM2 million for the new hall. 'Actually, we have identified several suitable locations for the construction, involving three infrastructures, the hall, a vehicle parking area and a field. 'Therefore, the chosen site, located on a field spanning over 1.2 hectares, is deemed highly suitable after considering its elevated position and flood-free status,' he said Monday. At the same time, the selection of the proposed site is also part of the long-term development plan for Pekan Merotai Baharu. Liew said the site is situated within the Pekan Merotai Baharu plan, near Kijang Point. 'The State Government wants this new hall to serve as the heart of community activities in Merotai, covering economics, socialand cultural aspects. 'I believe that if managed well, it can become a central public hub and another economic establishment for the people of Merotai,' he said. In addition to the new hall, Hajiji also announced an allocation of RM1 million for the installation of solar lights from the Jambatan Putih intersection to Kampung Sungai Udin aimed at lighting up the main Merotai – Kalabakan road. Additionally, Kampung Melati Burut and Kampung Iban were officially gazetted as the latest recognised villages in Merotai. Court declares Jovian Mandagie bankrupt over failure to repay RM5.28 million loan

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: Fashion designer Jovian Mandagie has been declared bankrupt by the High Court in Kuala Lumpur after failing to repay a friendly loan totalling RM5.28 million from a construction company. According to Berita Harian, senior assistant registrar Faisal Zulkifli today allowed a creditor's petition filed by Cekap Air Sdn Bhd. Based on the petition, filed on Nov 20 last year, Jovian, the former son-in-law of ex-prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, failed to comply with a bankruptcy notice dated May 21, 2024. The petition stated that Jovian owed Cekap Air RM5,284,340.66, including interest up to May 21, 2024, following a summary judgment granted by the High Court on April 2 the same year in a civil suit. Cekap Air's lawyer, Siti Nur Athirazatti Rohizad, said the company filed the bankruptcy notice after Jovian failed to comply with the summary judgment issued by the court. 'Jovian filed applications to stay and set aside both the notice and petition, but all were dismissed by the court,' she said. On May 16, 2023, Cekap Air filed a lawsuit against Jovian for allegedly failing to repay the loan, which had been extended as a friendly loan. In its statement of claim, the company said that Jovian was an acquaintance of Cekap Air's director, Yong Zhen Wei. The company claimed it loaned Jovian the funds at his verbal request on Feb 25, 2022, and transferred the money to his law firm's client's account. Jovian's appeal against the summary judgment is scheduled to be heard on Sept 15. Jovian was questioned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in its probe into Ismail's asset declaration. Ramly Food to delay price hike, says Armizan

PETALING JAYA: Frozen food company Ramly Food has agreed to temporarily postpone a planned price hike for its products, says domestic trade and cost of living minister Armizan Mohd Ali. Armizan said his ministry summoned the company following public concern, and a meeting was held last Tuesday to clarify the situation, Astro Awani reported. 'The ministry has issued a 'Goods Information Confirmation Notice' under Section 21 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act to obtain justification for the planned price increase,' he was quoted as saying at a press conference today. The issue gained traction after a vendor notice dated April 14 from Ramly Food Marketing Sdn Bhd began circulating online, stating that product prices would go up starting next Monday. The notice attributed the increase to rising raw material costs. In a separate case, Armizan said Sim Yang Hok Industries Sdn Bhd, which recently went viral over claims it had increased the price of ice products from RM3.70 to RM6, has denied the allegation. He said the company clarified that no official notice was issued and that it had lodged a police report over the viral claims. 'So far, both companies have stated that any proposed price increase is due to operating costs and not the implementation of the sales and service tax (SST),' he said. He also advised companies to consult the ministry before implementing any price adjustments to ensure they do not violate anti-profiteering laws. Sabah sports minister Ellron Angin denies role in mining graft scandal

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: Sabah youth and sports minister Ellron Alfred Angin has denied a news report alleging that he accepted a bribe of RM530,000 in connection with the alleged mining scandal in Sabah. Ellron said the accusations in the report by Malaysiakini are 'baseless slander driven by immature political motives to tarnish my reputation and integrity as an elected representative'. 'I have always upheld the principles of integrity, accountability and clean governance in line with the Sabah state government's commitment to combat corruption,' he said in a Facebook post. 'I have instructed my legal team to take firm action against any party spreading these false allegations.' The Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) deputy president's denial follows a rebuttal from party president Jeffrey Kitingan, who was also implicated in the Malaysiakini report, along with four other Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) leaders. On Monday, Sabah assistant industrial development and entrepreneurship minister Andi Suryady Bandy, and Sindumin assemblyman Dr Yusof Yacob were charged with receiving bribes related to mineral prospecting licence applications in the state. Yusof is also the chairman of Qhazanah Sabah Bhd, the state government's investment arm. Businessman Albert Wei was charged with bribing them. The alleged scandal was reported last year after a series of videos linking several Sabah assemblymen to it were leaked. The videos allegedly depicted discussions involving bribery and misconduct related to mineral exploration projects in the state.
