ROP research earns global acclaim in vet sciences
A scientific research paper published by the Royal Oman Police (ROP) Scientific Research team in Veterinary World has earned critical acclaim from equine experts and enthusiasts worldwide. It marks the world's first scientific documentation evaluating the effect of the EBN nutritional supplement on Arabian horses.
The paper, published in Veterinary World — a prestigious peer-reviewed journal ranked in the second quartile (Q2) globally — reflects ROP's strong commitment to applied scientific research. It also highlights Oman's rich cultural heritage by weaving in the story of 'Zad al Rakeb' within a scientific and documentary framework.
Speaking to Observer, Lieutenant Colonel Dr Khalid bin Obaid al Khalidi, Assistant Director of the Veterinary Services Department at the Mounted Police Command and the lead researcher, said: 'The Royal Oman Police places great importance on scientific research, guided by the belief that institutional development must be rooted in a solid knowledge base. This achievement is a testament to our commitment to nurturing national talent through collaboration with leading local and international institutions.'
Lt Col Dr Khalid added that the study represents the first global scientific evaluation of the EBN nutritional supplement, prepared using spray-dried technology, on purebred Arabian horses during regular training.
The research compared the EBN supplement with the Premium E supplement, known for its high vitamin E content, to assess impacts on immunity, liver function, muscle condition and physical stress indicators. Results showed that the EBN supplement significantly outperformed Premium E, proving to be a more effective anti-inflammatory and immune booster while avoiding some of the negative effects associated with prolonged vitamin E use.
"This gives our study high scientific value and places it at the forefront of specialised veterinary research worldwide," Lt Col Dr Khalid noted.
Beyond scientific findings, the paper also captures the cultural significance of Arabian horses in Oman. It recounts the historical tale of Zad al Rakeb — gifted by the Prophet Sulaiman (peace be upon him) to Azd Oman — as referenced in Omani historical records and the Omani Encyclopedia, underlining the deep-rooted bond between Omanis and Arabian horses.
The study was conducted under the direct supervision of the Mounted Police Command, in collaboration with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), the National University of Malaysia (UKM), the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources; and with support from the Research and Studies Centre at the Sultan Qaboos Academy for Police Sciences.

Muscat – Two research projects from Oman have been selected among the top 13 international entries to be showcased at the 66th London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) taking place till August 6. Oman participated in the forum with five innovative projects chosen from over 430 local submissions. Selection of two among the global top tier highlights the growing prominence of Omani youth in international scientific research and innovation. One of the selected projects – Tannova by Hala bint Ali al Zaabi – focuses on statistically optimised leachate treatment using date pit tannins and advanced oxidation technology. The project proposes a sustainable approach to industrial waste treatment using local natural resources. The research aims to harness AI for sustainable clean energy solutions. LIYSF is one of the world's leading scientific gatherings for young researchers, featuring participants from around the globe in fields such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The forum fosters scientific collaboration, innovation and direct engagement with international experts. Oman's participation is organised by Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, which received 430 project submissions this year. Of these, 30 met the eligibility criteria, with the top five selected to represent the sultanate. Almuntaser Salim al Mamari Abeer al Jabri, Research Capacity Building Specialist at the ministry, informed that since 2016, Oman has recorded 817 applicants, 123 shortlisted projects and 43 representatives at the forum. She added that LIYSF, which began in 1959, has supported more than 22,000 students globally. Oman's growing presence at such forums reflects national efforts to build research capacity and equip young citizens to address pressing global challenges in environment, energy and emerging technologies.

Dhofar hosts awareness event on drug use, online blackmail
Salalah: A community awareness event held in Salalah on Monday brought together healthcare professionals, law enforcement officers, and the public to discuss the growing dangers of drug addiction and cybercrime. Organised by the Omani Women's Association in Salalah, in cooperation with the Directorate General of Health Services in Dhofar and the Royal Oman Police (ROP), the event, 'Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery for All." Dr Hossam Fattouh, Head of Awqad Health Centre, described addiction as a chronic illness that alters brain function and behaviour, requiring comprehensive medical and psychological care. 'Addiction doesn't happen overnight,' Dr Fattouh said. 'It develops in stages – starting with habituation, then building tolerance, and eventually leading to full dependency on the substance.' He noted that addiction can stem from a wide range of substances – including illegal drugs, synthetic compounds, and even prescription medications when misused. Warning signs, he said, include sudden behavioural changes, poor academic or work performance, mood instability, social withdrawal, neglect of appearance, new associations with questionable peers, and unusual financial behaviour. Dr Fattouh expressed concern about the rising misuse of prescription sedatives, such as benzodiazepines, calling for strict adherence to medical instructions and cautioning against altering dosages without consulting a doctor. He stressed that prevention begins at home, through open communication between parents and children, setting positive examples, and building trust. 'Recovery is possible,' he added, 'but it requires a clear treatment plan, psychological support, and long-term follow-up. Family and community support are essential to lasting recovery.' The second session was delivered by Major Engineer Ahmed bin Awadh Al-Mashikhi, Deputy Director of Criminal Investigations at the ROP in Dhofar, who addressed the escalating threat of online blackmail. Al-Mashikhi outlined the types and legal definitions of cybercrime under Omani law, explaining how perpetrators exploit personal data to extort victims. He described the emotional toll such crimes take on victims and detailed practical steps individuals can take to protect their privacy online.'People must be cautious about the information they share on digital platforms,' he said. 'Recognising the early signs of blackmail and reporting incidents to the authorities can prevent greater harm.' He concluded by walking attendees through ROP's procedures for handling cybercrime complaints, encouraging the public to report incidents without delay and to trust the police's capacity to act swiftly and confidentially. The awareness programme comes amid broader efforts to promote public safety and well-being in Dhofar, particularly during the busy Khareef season, when thousands of visitors arrive in Salalah. Organisers hope the event will spark meaningful conversations within families and communities about early prevention, mental health, and digital security.
