YCH Group makes RM500m logistics investment
Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the RM500 million logistics investment by Singapore's YCH Group is a move to strengthen the country's role as a key manufacturing and services hub in Asean.
'As the lifeblood of global commerce, good logistics is key to ensuring the smooth and cost-efficient movement of goods and services. As such, we are pleased to welcome YCH Group's RM500-million investment in this sector in Malaysia,' he said in a statement.
Tengku Zafrul urged the group to be more inclusive by enabling SME exporters to also access the global market.
'When trade flows seamlessly, investors see greater opportunities, fuelling further growth and innovation. This is what will support our New Industrial Master Plan's goals to increase our competitiveness and position Malaysia a key manufacturing and services hub for Asean and beyond,' he added.
According to the group, this project represents their long-term commitment to Malaysia's regional supply chain development and a significant step in realising the country's vision as a leading logistics and trade hub in Asean.
SCC MY is poised to serve as a key enabler of regional connectivity, supporting smoother trade flows and future-ready logistics infrastructure, it added.
Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) CEO Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid said as the first recipient of Mida's Smart Logistics Complex incentive, YCH Group sets a powerful precedent for Malaysia's integrated smart logistics future.
'This achievement reflects our commitment to attracting high-impact investments and strengthening Malaysia's supply chain ecosystem through innovation and automation.
'The SLC incentive aligns perfectly with the Deklarasi Kuala Lumpur: Asean 2045, supporting our vision of a digitally advanced, economically resilient Asean region.'
YCH Group executive chairman Dr Robert Yap said Supply Chain City Malaysia is a major step forward in setting new standards of logistics excellence, supporting Malaysia's growth as a world-class supply chain leader.
'Our investment in FUSIONARIS and advanced technologies reflect our commitment to regional connectivity, efficient operations, and sustainable practices. We are also dedicated to training local talent, empowering them with essential skills to support Malaysia's journey as a preferred destination for global businesses.'
The Supply Chain and Logistics Academy, an industry-level development academy, will be hosted at SCC MY. It offers training programmes to equip local talent with the skills needed to thrive in tomorrow's logistics landscape, ultimately enabling Malaysia's workforce to remain competitive on the global stage.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has revived trade negotiations with the European Union (EU) after more than a decade, said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz. He said the move marks a renewed effort to strengthen ties with one of its largest trading partners outside Asia. "EU is one. We've resumed the negotiation, which was stopped in 2012. Last year, we resumed the negotiation. Officially, we started this year," he said in an interview with CNBC's Squawk Box Asia. He said the renewed talks come as Malaysia pursues a broader diversification strategy, with trade agreements also being advanced with Gulf states, South Korea, India and China. The EU is Malaysia's fourth-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade valued at €52.2 billion (RM260 billion) in 2024, according to official data. The bloc is also Malaysia's third-largest export destination, with electronics, machinery and palm oil products among the key goods shipped to Europe. Negotiations on a Malaysia–EU Free Trade Agreement were first launched in 2010 but stalled two years later over differences on market access, government procurement and sustainability standards.

Malaysia bans export of unprocessed rare earths, wants foreign firms to invest in downstream processing
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has imposed a ban on the export of unprocessed rare earths as part of its strategy to capture greater economic value from the strategic minerals. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the government wants international firms to invest in downstream processing within Malaysia instead of shipping raw materials abroad. He said the government is positioning Malaysia as a processing hub rather than a raw material supplier. He said Australia's Lynas Rare Earths, which processes rare earth in Gebeng, Pahang and mining in Gua Musang, Kelantan, is one of the players currently allowed to export from Malaysia under the new rules that permit exports after processing. "Whatever has been mined, cannot be exported unless it went through the midstream and downstream part of the activities. "What we are doing now is inviting all companies to come to Malaysia and to be part of the supply chain to invest in the downstream activities of rare earth and then export the value-added products," he said in an interview with CNBC's Squawk Box Asia. Tengku Zafrul said Malaysia's rare earth strategy underscores its commitment to neutrality, stressing that equal treatment of both the US and China is essential to maintain credibility. "Today, we engage both sides. And to be fair, both China and US have never said that you can't supply to the other. But what both have also always reminded us is that you cannot have two different standards. "If you allow, for example, export of rare earth to China, you must also allow to other parts of the world. So we have to be consistent, to be neutral," he added.

UMC doubles production capacity with Batu Kawan factory expansion
GEORGE TOWN: UMediC Group Bhd (UMC) has increased its manufacturing capacity by doubling it with the unveiling of its expansion at Batu Kawan Industrial Park, Penang. In a joint statement today, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and UMC said the new facility, unveiled on Aug 15, adds 20,000 square feet (sq ft) of production space to UMC's existing 30,000-sq-ft operation. "The expansion includes three major components, namely UMC Healthcare Centre, Rescue Medic Ambulance Services and UMC Learning Centre, and this growth represents a major commitment to Malaysia's healthcare future," according to the statement. MIDA chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid said this achievement reflected UMC's strong vision and commitment to moving up the value chain, in line with national strategies such as the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 to drive innovation, diversification and high-value offerings. He added that UMC has evolved from a medical device manufacturer into an integrated healthcare provider by leveraging advanced technology, digital tools, and research and development (R&D). Additionally, the establishment of training centres and ambulance services enhances its market position while contributing to the improvement of Malaysia's healthcare industry. Present at the launch was State Executive Councillor for Youth and Sports Daniel Gooi Zi Sen. "UMC's success brings pride to Penang, boosts our economy and enhances the nation's global reputation," he said. UMC produces essential devices such as prefilled humidifiers, prefilled nebulisers, and asthma spacers, which are exported to about 40 countries.
