Durban North knitters hope to stitch new connections
A GROUP of residents have begun a knitting and crocheting group in the hopes of creating a community networking and learning opportunity for others to learn the skill.
The group, based at St Margaret's Church in Durban North, is open to anyone wanting to share their skills or learn about crocheting and knitting.
They meet on the first Saturday of every month, between 10:00 and 12:00.

Debbie Russell, who many in the group cite as the linchpin of the community initiative, said the next meeting takes place on Saturday, May 3.
'Everyone is welcome to come and learn how to knit and crochet or just come along and chat while working on your latest project. It is something I've wanted to learn more about. I drew in another member of the church, Tracy Grant, and we spoke at a braai and the idea to start the group was born. We've already had a few residents join in but we'd love to see more come out and learn and grow with the crocheting and knitting skills. We always bring extra wool and extra crochet hooks and knitting needles if they don't have them,' she said.
For La Lucia resident Grant, her journey with knitting began at a young age.
'My grandmother and mother taught me when I was a child and I've helped to teach others since we began this initiative. I find the fellowship of being with each other while chatting about all sorts of things; there is definitely a sense of community. I also find that knitting and crocheting is a good stress release, that repetitive motion is very calming,' Grant said.

Anne Taylor, another member of the group, began her journey with knitting in Grade One at school.
'While I learnt how to knit at school, I only learnt how to crochet when I grew up. I actually taught myself. Being a part of this group has made a positive impact on me because I get to learn from more experienced knitters and crocheters. It really teaches you patience and it's fun, especially when you find something that is difficult, it's nice to overcome with a group,' she said

Ladles of Love tackles hunger among homeless people
As recyclers and homeless individuals endured the cold afternoon breeze, with temperatures dropping below 10°C, Ladles of Love kept them in mind. 'I don't see homeless people as drunk, addicted people, I see them as human beings like you and me who have a story that brought them to where they are. I am no better than a homeless person just because I don't live on the streets, and I see them as people who have seriously lost their way. Sharing kindness with such a lost soul seems to be the only way to be.' He said his job was to show them that in their 'lonely and traumatic life,' somebody cared about them, and maybe that would keep hope alive in them to get off the street one day. He added that as long as the 'Godly conversation' he had with a homeless man more than a decade ago remained alive in him, he would continue serving those in need. No injuries reported as blaze destroy 23 buses in Mabopane A total of 23 buses have been destroyed in a fire that broke out at a private bus company depot in Mabopane on Tuesday afternoon, Tshwane Emergency Services has confirmed. Emergency Services spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni said firefighters responded swiftly to the scene and managed to save 14 buses from being engulfed by the blaze. No injuries were reported, and the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. 'When our teams arrived, they found several buses already ravaged by the fire,' said Mnguni, adding that the buses were parked in an open area at the depot. Mnguni further said that the destroyed buses were not in operation and had not been commissioned, meaning public transport services for commuters in the area would not be affected. He added that the buses do not belong to the city of Tshwane. He said firefighters managed to extinguish the fire and remained on the scene to continue damping down operations to cool the fire and eliminate any chance of reignition occurring. Another municipal strike confirmed as waste removal services suspended
It has been confirmed that solid waste department employees have gone on strike and are demanding salary increases. A trusted council source told the Middelburg Observer that negotiations for higher salaries have been going on behind the scenes for weeks. WhatsApp notifications are currently being sent out, informing residents that waste collection services have been wholly suspended until further notice. It's not great news for taxpayers who will still have to fork out increased tariffs, despite no services being rendered. It's unclear where negotiations stand at this point. According to the municipality, refuse removal services have been suspended due to 'unforeseen circumstances'. The source, however, confirmed that workers have downed tools until their demands are met. The message circulating on groups has been signed off on by Municipal Manager Mandla Mnguni.
