ne'ma Launches UAE's First National Study to Track Food Loss and Waste
The 18-month study, now underway, involves 3,000 participants from households, businesses, and public sector entities across all seven Emirates. It will map food waste across the entire supply chain, from farm to fork, laying the foundation for systemic change and evidence-based policies. Findings will be announced in the first half of 2026.
Led by ne'ma and supported by strategic partners including the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, ADAFSA, Tadweer Group, Dubai Municipality, and others, the study aims to establish national food loss and waste indices. These metrics will help shape long-term interventions and promote a shift to a sustainable, circular economy.
A key milestone is set for September 2025, when a two-week nationwide data collection effort will involve direct measurement of household food waste. This hands-on approach is designed to capture accurate, real-time insights on when, where, and why food is lost or wasted.
Khuloud Hassan Al Nuwais of Emirates Foundation highlighted the importance of national collaboration, stating the study enables a unified approach to building data-driven solutions. Officials from ADAFSA, Dubai Municipality, Tadweer, and Aldar echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the study's potential to drive environmental and economic benefits.
The final report will be shared globally, reinforcing the UAE's commitment to sustainable development and positioning the country as a regional leader in food system resilience. By engaging communities and sectors nationwide, the UAE is taking concrete steps to reduce food waste and protect vital resources for future generations.

Dubai Municipality has launched a smart digital application, 'Eltizam', designed to empower selected government officials to monitor and document public cleanliness violations. By granting judicial officer status to authorised personnel, the app strengthens enforcement of existing regulations and reinforces Dubai's commitment to maintaining its position as the cleanest city in the world. A key milestone in Dubai Municipality's digital transformation efforts, the launch of 'Eltizam' reflects the city's broader vision of fostering shared responsibility between officials and the community to protect urban aesthetics, public health, and environmental sustainability. Through the app, authorised users can take photos of violations, automatically capture their location, add contextual notes, and record breaches of cleanliness regulations in real time. The initiative is rooted in Dubai Law No. (19) of 2024, which regulates judicial officer status in the Emirate and aims to ensure compliance, legal clarity, and enhanced community participation. Targeting eight key violations The first phase of 'Eltizam' focuses on eight public cleanliness violations, categorised as negative behaviours that distort the city's image. These include: Spitting in public areas Disposing of chewing gum improperly Littering in public spaces Dumping organic or general waste into the sea, beaches, creeks, or ports Draining vehicle wash water in non-designated areas Lighting fires or barbecuing in unauthorised places Posting flyers, advertisements, or printed materials that deface public areas Failing to remove animal waste from public spaces By digitising the enforcement process and equipping judicial officers with smart tools, 'Eltizam' represents a shift towards proactive monitoring and greater transparency in maintaining the city's visual and environmental standards. In January, Dubai was named the world's cleanest city for the fifth year in a row. Dubai Municipality is the cause of this with strategies and initiatives to keep the city clean, and the newest one has just been announced. A new app, Eltizam, will now be used to help monitor and report public cleanliness. It encourages shared responsibility across the communities to take care of the city. Through the app, authorised users will now be able to report violations, take photos of breaches in real time, add contextual notes and more. Dubai Municipality manages a 365-day cleanliness and sustainability system across the city. This is supported by a fleet of 855 advanced vehicles, machinery, and equipment, along with over 3200 municipality team members who are dedicated to keeping the city clean and safe for all of us living in Dubai. Daily cleaning programmes across the municipality are complex and across diverse areas, including 2,400 kilometres of main roads and highways, 1,419 square kilometres of investment zones, 33.4 kilometres of water canals and creeks, along with residential, industrial, and rural areas, markets, and waste storage facilities. ADAFSA releases Abu Dhabi Date Varieties Guide
Abu Dhabi: In conjunction with the launch of the 21st Liwa Date Festival 2025, the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) released the Abu Dhabi Date Varieties Guide, a comprehensive reference for the most prominent date varieties in the emirate. ADAFSA's pavilion at the festival will witness promoting the guide to help farmers, visitors, and stakeholders know more about the palm farming and date production. Featuring 61 date varieties classified by their environmental and geographical traits, the guide clarifies varieties suitable for arid regions and others adapted to high-humidity coastal areas. The guide further provides in-depth details on ripening times, production rates, unique traits for each variety, and recommendations to improve quality and productivity. The guide highlights several prominent date varieties, including "Fard," widely grown in Abu Dhabi, particularly in Al Ain region. It is a commercial variety consumed both as fully ripe (Rutab), and dry (Tamer). Another variety is "Dabbas," a commercially significant variety thrives in arid environments such as the Al Dhafra region. Furthermore, the guide introduces "Naghal" dates, an early-maturing variety of high economic value, primarily consumed as fully ripe (Rutab). In this regard, ADAFSA emphasized that releasing this guide aligns with its strategy to promote sustainable agriculture and provide farmers with accurate information for selecting environmentally appropriate varieties. Moreover, the guide will contribute to preserving the diversity of local varieties while enhancing the economic value of the emirate's date palm sector. According to ADAFSA, the guide serves as a technical reference for farmers and professionals to improve agricultural productivity and food security through cultivation of high-quality local cultivars. The Authority emphasized that publishing such guides reinforces its efforts to promote Abu Dhabi's position as a leading hub for sustainable agriculture, aligning with Abu Dhabi's vision for comprehensive and sustainable development. The guide is available to the public on ADAFSA's website.
