Work hard to win KMC polls, Minister Bharath tells party leaders

The Hindu18-05-2025
Industries and Commerce Minister T. G. Bharath has called on Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders to work diligently to secure wins in all 33 wards in the upcoming Kurnool Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections. He asked the party leaders and aspiring candidates to begin groundwork immediately and build strong connections with the people.
A Mini Mahanadu was held as a preparatory event in the Kurnool Assembly constituency ahead of the party's state-level Mahanadu scheduled for later this month. On the occasion, Mr. Bharath garlanded the statue of former Chief Minister and party founder late N.T. Rama Rao, and honoured the Indian tri-service soldiers martyred in the recent Operation Sindoor.
Addressing party leaders and cadre, Mr. Bharath said: 'Resolve people's grievances and win their support in securing a party ticket. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had relied on public surveys to select MLA candidates in the last elections. All surveys favoured me as I managed to earn the people's support.'
Highlighting the government's development initiatives, the minister said: 'The State is set to witness rapid strides in terms of development under the visionary leadership of Mr. Naidu.' Several industries are set to come up at the Orvakal industrial park, creating significant employment opportunities. We are moving forward due to the policy decisions of the government. At the recently concluded State Industrial Promotion Board (SIB) meeting, investments to the tune of several hundred crores of rupees were approved.'
Mr. Naidu, who last week visited Kurnool, assured an allocation of ₹6 crore towards the development of a Rythu Bazaar at C-Camp in the city. Mr. Bharath said: 'The Chief Minister has also planned to set up one Rythu Bazaar in all the 175 Assembly constituencies of the State.' The minister announced ₹1 crore for the construction of a BC Bhavan in Kurnool.
Kurnool Urban Development Authority (KUDA) Chairperson Somisetty Venkateswarlu said: 'Mr Bharath is working to resolve the problems brought to him.' He expressed confidence that Kurnool will achieve development under the leadership of Mr. Bharath.

Drop Polavaram-Banakacharla river linkage project, says former NDMA vice chief

Hyderabad: Former vice-chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and founder-president of the Forum for Godavari waters utilisation, Marri Shashidhar Reddy, on Saturday, described the Polavaram-Banakacharla river linkage project proposed by the Andhra Pradesh government as 'a white elephant', since its estimated cost outweighs its utility. The Polavaram-Banakacharla river linkage project proposed by the Andhra Pradesh government. (ANI PHOTO) Reddy said he had written to chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu on August 6 to drop the proposal for the Polavaram-Banakacharla project that seeks to divert Godavari waters to the Krishna River and then to the Pennar basin and instead follow the 'four-water concept' adopted by the Rajasthan government. Reddy, son of former chief minister Dr Marri Channa Reddy, recalled that during his earlier stint as the chief minister of combined Andhra Pradesh in 2000, Naidu had launched the 'Neeru-Meeru' programme by constituting a Water Conservation Mission (WCM) with many eminent experts, including late T Hanumantha Rao. The expert committee recommended implementation of the Watershed Development projects based on Four Waters Concept (FWC), which is effective utilisation of rainwater, soil moisture up to water table level, ground water and surface water. This technology stresses on water spreading techniques to facilitate recharge to ground water, in the upper areas of the watershed, through mini percolation tanks, he said. Reddy said the scheme launched in October 2001 covered nearly 84 villages in Telangana and about 120 villages in Rayalaseema and it had yielded excellent results. 'For instance, at Gottigaripalli village of Kohir block in Sangareddy district the scheme, implemented at a cost of about ₹5,000 per acre, consistently provided water for three crops in a year,' he said. He said subsequently, the FWC was completely ignored in the Telugu states, it was successfully implemented in Rajasthan by former chief minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia under the 'Mukhyamantri Jal Swavalamban Abhiyan' (MJSA) between 2014 and 2018. Ironically, a Telangana government engineer Md Afsar went on deputation to implement the programme in Rajasthan, he said. Reddy appealed to Naidu, who had sowed the seed for FWC during the tenure of combined Andhra Pradesh in 2001, to seriously consider it as a viable, low-cost alternative to the Polavaram--Banakacherla Project. This can be implemented in about two years, capable of providing water for three crops annually to cater to 30 lakh acres for a total cost of just ₹4,500 crore at the rate of ₹15,000 per acre at today's rates. This will be a fraction of even the minimum basic estimated cost of ₹81,900 crore for the Polavaram-Banakacharla project, he said.

Congress: ‘Why was Op Sindoor stopped, who put pressure?'

The Congress Saturday asked PM Narendra Modi why he stopped Operation Sindoor on May 10 and under whose pressure, after IAF chief Air Chief Marshal A P Singh said 'at least' five Pakistani fighter jets and 'one large aircraft' were downed during Operation Sindoor. Congress MP and party's communication in charge Jairam Ramesh said on X, '… it becomes even more shocking that the PM suddenly stopped Operation Sindoor. Where did the pressure on the PM come from, and why did he have to relent so quickly?' Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat said, 'I have faith in the Army and in the government. The Army says the incident took place on April 22, followed by Operation Sindoor. In all these days, why didn't the government give an answer? Even when discussions took place in the House, was their mouth sealed shut?' TMC MP Sagarika Ghose said: 'I am glad the IAF chief has set the record straight but some questions remain. First, why did it take 3 months for the government to put out such a statement during which Pakistan was able to push its own narrative across global media. Second, why didn't the Defence Minister reveal this in the House. And third, given this clear air superiority of India, why did Modi hastily agree to a ceasefire announced by Donald Trump.'

Sinister intentions of power-hungry Rahul exposed: BJP

Hours after IAF chief Air Chief Marshal A P Singh's statement, the BJP Saturday lashed out at Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi and the Congress, saying that when the Armed Forces personnel sacrifice their lives for the nation's security, 'parties like Rahul Gandhi and Congress, driven by their hunger for power, never hesitate to insult the Army, from surgical strikes to Operation Sindoor'. Accusing Gandhi, his party, and their 'arrogant alliance' of having 'hurt the soul of the nation' and 'speaking the language of the enemy', Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on X, 'This is not just politics, but proof of an anti-national mindset. Their sinister intentions are continuously being exposed before the nation.' Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said the IAF chief's statement should put the Congress to shame for 'pushing the Pakistani narrative'. In a post on X, Sarma said, 'First, their leaders peddled lies on India's losses whereas we now have quantifiable, detailed and irrefutable proof of the wrath inflicted upon the enemy,' he said. 'Second, they ran another Pak-originated disinformation campaign claiming the Modi Govt put restrictions on the operational capability of our forces. This too has been debunked comprehensively,' he said.
