QB Matthew Stafford to start Rams training camp on sidelines to recover from back soreness
Stafford is only expected to miss the first 'block' of roughly four practices in training camp, coach Sean McVay said Tuesday as the Rams reported to work at Loyola Marymount University.
'He had a little bit of soreness in his back that kind of crept up,' McVay said. 'He's been throwing, feeling good. It's not anything that's necessarily new. It's something that he's dealt with before.'

McVay already had a plan in place to limit Stafford's overall work in training camp, and the back soreness will push his camp debut back to next week at the earliest. The 10th-leading passer in NFL history was already expected to sit out occasional practices as he ramps up for his 17th season, and McVay traditionally does not use any key players in the preseason.
The 37-year-old Stafford is beginning his fifth season with the Rams, who acquired him from Detroit in 2021 and immediately won the Super Bowl in February 2022.
McVay said Stafford is expected to return to the field after the five-day 'acclimation period' to begin camp. Backup Jimmy Garoppolo will run the Rams' offense in the early practices.
'Ultimately, it's about having him feel as good as possible going into Year 17,' McVay said. 'And that's where you do feel good about having a guy like Jimmy to step in and do a great job for the first few practices, and then Matthew will be ready to roll.'
Stafford is playing this season with a substantial raise after a second straight offseason of financial discontent. This dispute was resolved more quickly than last year's standoff, and Stafford participated in the Rams' offseason workout programs to begin forming a bond with new receiver Davante Adams.
'If he was a first-year player, I think you'd say, 'Man, every rep really matters,'' McVay said. 'I think the important thing is having a big-picture perspective with a guy going into Year 17, based on this being something that he's had before and dealt with through different parts of his career. He's so in tune with his body, and talking with him, I feel really good.'
McVay also expressed optimism about Alaric Jackson while outlining the Rams' recovery plan for their starting left tackle. Jackson had a reoccurrence of blood clots in his lower leg during the offseason, shortly after he agreed to a three-year, $57 million deal to stay with the Rams.

Jackson will not go on a restricted list to start training camp, but will do individual workouts while ramping up deliberately to full strength. McVay didn't want to guarantee that Jackson will be ready for the start of the season, but the Rams are optimistic.
'I do feel good about the plan we have in place that hopefully leads to him being able to go out and compete with his teammates,' McVay said. 'I know he's really feeling good. He's handled this like a total stud. … He's got a lot of people that love him that are with him on this journey.'
Los Angeles signed veteran offensive tackle D.J. Humphries in June as a backup plan if Jackson has any delays in his progress.

Raiders trade CB Jakorian Bennett to Eagles for DT Thomas Booker IV, AP source says
HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders are trading cornerback Jakorian Bennett to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for defensive tackle Thomas Booker IV, a person with knowledge of the deal said Monday. That person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the trade is pending physicals on both players. Bennett, drafted in the fourth round two years ago out of Maryland, started seven games for the Raiders last season before being shut down because of a torn labrum that required surgery. He played well as a cover cornerback, but Bennett was running with the second and third teams this training camp under first-year coach Pete Carroll. At 5-foot-10, Bennett doesn't fit Carroll's preference of playing taller cornerbacks. Six-foot Eric Stokes and 6-2 rookie Darien Porter have been competing with the starters this camp. Booker started one game and played in all 17 last season for the Eagles. He also appeared in four postseason games for the Super Bowl champions. But Booker, a 2022 fifth-round draft pick of Houston, was fifth on the depth chart at a deep defensive tackle position this season. The Raiders released defensive tackle Christian Wilkins on July 24 over a dispute over a recovery plan for a broken foot from last season. The club is attempting to void the remaining $35.25 million of Wilkins' deal, and he has filed a grievance with the NFL Players Association. Alonso pulls within one of Strawberry, but Mets fall to Guardians after comeback bid
NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Alonso hit his 251st career homer Monday night to pull within one of Darryl Strawberry's New York Mets franchise record, but the Cleveland Guardians earned a 7-6, 10-inning win after squandering a five-run lead. Gabriel Arias' 440-foot, three-run homer to left-center ended a five-run sixth inning against Sean Manaea, who surrendered RBI singles to David Fry and Carlos Santana earlier in the inning. Alonso, starting at designated hitter for the 59th time in his career, hit a 388-foot blast to left-center in the bottom half against Slade Cecconi. The slugger has three homers in his last four games. Alonso had his fourth hit, an RBI single, in the eighth, before Mark Vientos delivered the game-tying sacrifice fly. Cade Smith (4-4) escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the ninth. Top-seeded Zverev beats defending champ Popyrin to reach semifinals in Toronto
TORONTO (AP) — Top-seeded Alexander Zverev rallied to defeat No. 18 Alexei Popyrin of Australia 6-7 (8), 6-4, 6-3 on Monday to reach the semifinals of the National Bank Open. Zverev, the 2017 tournament champion, will face either No. 11 seed Karen Khachanov of Russia or No. 26 Alex Michelsen of the U.S. Zverev, a German who is ranked No. 3, advanced to his 75th ATP Tour semifinal. He is looking for his 25th tournament title and eighth in an ATP 1000 Masters tournament. The other quarterfinals are Tuesday. Second-seeded Taylor Fritz will take on No. 6 Andrey Rublev of Russia, while No. 4 Ben Shelton is slated to meet No. 9 Alex de Minaur of Australia. Both semifinals go Wednesday ahead of Thursday's title match. Popyrin took the first set when his gentle backhand volley after a long rally grazed the top of the net and dropped for the winning point — much to the delight of his fans, including one with an inflatable yellow kangaroo. Zverev has two tournament wins on clay this year, and is the highest-ranked player competing in a Toronto field lacking some significant star power after Sinner, No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, No. 5 Jack Draper and No. 6 Novak Djokovic all skipped the hard-court event.
