A KLM Boeing 777 flight bound for Amsterdam was filled with thick smoke after a power bank in an overhead locker suddenly caught fire. Panicked passengers covered their faces as a flight attendant walked down the aisle with a fire extinguisher. The incident occurred while most passengers were sleeping, about four hours before landing.
Simeone Malagoli, a passenger on the flight, described it as "one of the tensest" journeys of his life. He shared footage on Instagram showing smoke filling the cabin and himself covering his nose with a pillow.
"Smoke was detected on board due to a burning power bank. The crew quickly extinguished the device, following established safety procedures," the airline said in a statement.

However, the flight safely landed in Amsterdam with no reported injuries.
Notably, portable chargers, like the one that caught fire, contain lithium-ion batteries, which are allowed in carry-on luggage but not checked bags due to overheating risks. Lithium batteries, commonly used in devices like phones and laptops, have been increasingly linked to plane fires.
Some airlines restrict power bank use during flights. Emirates recently announced a ban on using power banks on flights starting October 1, 2025, though passengers can still bring them onboard without using them.
"After a comprehensive safety review, Emirates is taking a firm and proactive stance to mitigate risk when it comes to power banks onboard. There has been a significant growth in customers using power banks in recent years, resulting in an increasing number of lithium battery-related incidents onboard flights across the wider aviation industry," the airline said in a statement.

Qatar Airways bans some Anker power banks onboard over safety concerns

Doha-based Qatar Airways has banned passengers from carrying or checking in some models of power banks manufactured by Anker. The restricted models are those recently recalled by the Chinese electronics manufacturer due to the risk of overheating, smoke, melting, or fire. The Anker power banks banned by Qatar Airways are: Anker A1647, A1652, A1681, A1689, A1257, Anker PowerCore 10000, which were recalled in June 2025 and A1642, A1647, A1652, which were recalled in October 2024. According to reports, some models of Anker power banks were flagged as a safety risk due to lithium-ion batteries provided by one of its suppliers. In June, Anker had acknowledged the issue, while stating that even as the risk of a malfunction is low, the affected models are being recalled as a precautionary measure. 'We kindly ask all passengers to verify any Anker power banks in their possession prior to travel. If your device is part of the recall, it is prohibited from being brought onboard,' Qatar Airways said in a statement. Earlier, in a related development, another Gulf-based airline, Emirates, had issued rules banning the use of power banks on its flights, effective October 1. As per Emirates's revised policy, passengers are allowed to carry one power bank, provided it is rated below 100 watt-hours. The power bank must have a clearly marked capacity rating and must not be stored in overhead compartments. They must be kept in the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat in front of the passenger.

Who is Ethan Guo, the teen influencer stranded in Antarctica after ‘illegal' landing in Chile?

A 19-year-old American pilot and social media influencer has been stranded in Antarctica since June after allegedly landing his small aircraft in Chilean territory without permission. According to The Independent, Ethan Guo was on a solo mission to fly across all seven continents to raise $1 million for cancer research when his journey came to an abrupt stop. Chilean authorities accuse him of filing a false flight plan and breaching 'multiple national and international' rules regulating entry into Antarctica and the approved travel routes. Chilean prosecutor Cristian Cristoso alleged that Guo knowingly submitted misleading flight details, while his legal team claims he encountered unexpected challenges during the flight. After being charged, he was told to remain within Chilean territory. Severe winter weather in the Southern Hemisphere meant no flights were available, leaving him at a military base for more than six weeks. On August 11, a judge dropped the charges after Guo agreed to donate $30,000 to a children's cancer foundation within 30 days. However, he must also cover all expenses for his stay at the military facility, the security of his aircraft, and his return trip. Once weather conditions allow him to leave, he will be barred from re-entering Chile for three years. Ethan Guo is a 19-year-old Asian-American pilot with more than 1.4 million Instagram followers, where he documents his global travels. He began flying at 13, earned his private pilot's licence at 17, and holds an IFR rating, allowing him to operate using only instruments. To date, he has logged over 700 flight hours, crossed the Atlantic three times, and visited all 48 contiguous US states. His journey so far has taken him to six continents-- North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia-- with stops at hospitals to promote cancer awareness. Guo funds his mission through sponsorships, media collaborations, and social media content. He was inspired to take on this challenge after his cousin was diagnosed with cancer in 2021. 'He inspired me to take life more seriously and join the fight against cancer,' Guo states on his website. 'I want to use every opportunity to raise awareness of childhood cancer and the urgent need for more research into prevention and treatment.'
