A new A24 movie with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score is coming to streaming this week
Its run has continued with more recent critical and commercial hits like The Brutalist, Materialists and Friendship. Now, one of the most acclaimed A24 films of the last few months is hitting streaming – and it might be one you haven't even heard of.
On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, by director Rungano Nyoni, is a surreal dark comedy set in the filmmaker's home country of Zambia. One night, a woman named Shula (Susan Chardy) comes across a dead body on the side of the road: her uncle's. As funeral preparations commence, the narrative flashes back and forth, revealing the dark secrets of Shula's middle-class family.
The film – Nyoni's second, after 2017's I Am Not a Witch – currently holds a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and an 87 rating on Metacritic. Time Out's own review describes the movie as 'thought-provoking' and 'visually arresting'. It's available to stream on HBO Max starting this Friday, July 4.
Two more widely seen, if less lauded, A24 releases are also premiering on HBO Max this month.
Opus, starring Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich, arrives July 11. The thriller follows a young journalist (Edebiri) who's invited to a listening party for the new album from an enigmatic pop star turned possible cult leader (Malkovich).
Later in the month comes Death of a Unicorn, a horror satire in which a father and daughter (Jason Bateman and Jenna Ortega) accidentally strike and kill the titular mythical beast with their car, incurring the wrath of its parents. The movie hits the streamer on July 25.

Natalie Palamides' solo show WEER will reopen the Cherry Lane Theatre
The latest in the spate of cross-over hits to have started their life at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, A24 will produce the American premiere of Natalie Palamides' one-woman show, WEER. The four-week engagement will be the first long-run program at the historic Cherry Lane Theatre, which will reopen in September after being dark for two years. Tickets are on sale now at or at the theatre's box office, newly reopened today. In WEER, the award-winning clown-comedienne plays both sides of a dueling Gen X couple – literally: one half of her body the man; the other, the woman. Reviewing its Fringe debut last year, Time Out's Andrzej Lukowski called the 'gloriously ridiculous '90s rom com' a 'virtuoso piece of batshittery from Palamides.' Palamides writes, directs and performs in the show, describing it as, New Years Eve 1999. Star Crossed Lovers. A Quarrel at the strike of midnight. Expect to see split-in-half wigs, costumes and fake chest hair in the 'hysterically funny but weirdly poignant hour.' Opening night is set for September 28, with performances scheduled through October 19. Tickets range from $30–$109 and are available now at though there'll also be A$24 rush ticket deal for every performance (more than one ticket available per show, but how could we resist the nod?). Palamides hit the indie mainstream when Netflix picked up her sell-out special Nate for distribution. The Pittsburgh native has won a slew of Edinburgh awards, which makes New York theater the next logical stage to conquer. Tucked in Manhattan's West Village since 1817, when it went up as a farm silo before finding new lives as a brewery, box factory and gay bar, the intimate theater has seen some of the greatest theatrical talents premiere works by the likes of Edward Albee and Tennessee Williams. Indie film company A24 purchased it in 2023, and will present theatrical productions, stand-up comedy, staged readings, film screenings and other special events in the 166-seat venue, which now includes a new bar and restaurant from the Frenchette team. A screening series helmed by Sofia Coppola will begin on Sunday, September 14, followed by an inaugural block party.

The Spanish city named Europe's nightlife capital right now
Madrid is the best city for nightlife in Europe, according to Time Out's new ranking – here's why the Spanish capital claimed the prize. With these scorching temperatures, we only hit the streets when the sun starts to dip – some days, there's literally no other way to survive. We're living more by moonlight than daylight – and honestly? We're embracing it. People say Madrid never sleeps, but in the summer it barely even siestas. Case in point: Time Out's annual ranking (based on the votes of nearly 20,000 people worldwide and insights from our editors) places Madrid at the very top of the European nightlife leaderboard. This year Vegas takes the crown, but Madrid's right there on the podium, proudly flying the flag for Europe. Why Madrid is Europe's undisputed nightlife capital In 2025, Madrid claims the title of best nightlife city in Europe (and second globally), so let's dust off our party shoes and take our clubs, cocktail dens, rooftop bars, dinner shows, and queer bars for a proper spin. While icons like Fabrik and Ochoymedio respectively celebrate 22 and 25 years of keeping weekends sacred this year, new energy is shaking things up. The creative duo Edgar Kerri and Laura Vandall are breathing fresh life into the scene with cocktail-club hybrids that attract Madrid's coolest crowds. If you know your stuff, you've probably already hit up Club Malasaña, El Internacional, Lucky Dragon, or Chinchin. On the hunt for a chic hideout near Gran Vía? Stop by Lula Club. Want something more elevated? Fitz – just steps away from Plaza de España – delivers that VIP night out. At Príncipe Pío station, Antídoto Club has a vibey dance floor. Oh, and these three hot spots are all within stumbling distance of each other, so you can easily see where your evening takes you. Meanwhile, Madrid's LGBTIQ+ scene stays colourful and fabulous. Legends like Rick's (which opened way back in 1985) are still going strong, while Maravillas Club (formerly an indie haven) hosts weekly drag shows. Over at Marta, Cariño!, the crowd shows up in full force night after night, and Salvaora Brown, a brand-new venue in Chueca, is shaking up the scene. But we haven't even mentioned Macera Club, Mondo Disko, Kapital, Independance, or Sala Villanos – just a flavour of what Madrid's centre offers for night owls. And trust us: the party doesn't stop outside the M-30. View this post on Instagram A post shared by El Internacional (@elinternacionalmadrid) The best cocktail bars in Madrid Not a clubber? No problem. Ease into the night (or stay and linger until the early hours) at one of Madrid's stellar cocktail bars. You don't have to party until the birds start singing: instead, settle in at the bar and enjoy the atmosphere until last orders. If you're planning a cocktail crawl, head to the Barrio de las Letras. It's packed with gems – from all-time faves like Salmon Guru and Santos y Desamparados, to fresh new spots like the first European outlet from legendary Japanese bartender Shingo Gokan. Then there's Devil's Cut – a cocktail bar turned city legend that delivers moody glamour and bold, short pours. And if you prefer something with a little more mystery, make your way to Pensión Mimosas, a 'secret' bar near Puerta del Sol with a buzzy crowd and surprise twists. Dinner shows and late-night dining Thanks to a Latin American wave shaking up the scene, dinner-show culture is booming in Madrid. Think multi-course meals with live performances – or dinners that morph into full-on parties once midnight hits. Restaurants drop the lights, crank up the volume, and become instant nightclubs. Pabblo, Rhudo and Jimmy's are at the top of their game. You'll also find nightlife-meets-glamour at clubs like Gunilla, Istar, and complete with guest lists, bottle service, and VIP tables.

The best hotel in the UK is in London, according to Muddy Stilettos
Every year, lifestyle guide Muddy Stilettos names 'the best of' independent businesses in the UK, including pubs, bars, shops, cafés, hotels and more. Listen up, because this year's Muddy Awards, naming the 'Best of the Best' winners, have just been revealed. According to the 2025 awards, the UK's best hotel is in London. The winners were judged by the Muddy Stilettos editors. Judges from 35 countries selected the number one entry from shortlist of regional entries across 21 lifestyle categories. Britain's best hotel for 2025 is Broadwick Soho in, you guessed it, Soho. The central London boutique hotel is known for its OTT interiors with clashing colours and prints, and seriously glam old-school atmosphere. Opened in 2023, the eight-storey, 57-bedroom bolthole is quickly becoming known as one of London's top places to stay. It's so good that Time Out gave the hotel five stars when we reviewed it back in February. 'Taking inspiration from the loud-and-proud exuberance of London's West End, there's no holding back at Broadwick Soho,' wrote Time Out's Talia Stanton. 'It's an independent hotel to its core, with intricate interiors that can't be replicated and a clockwork standard of service that takes a one-of-a-kind team to achieve. You can sense you're about to experience some serious hospitality magic from the moment you enter through that big pink townhouse door.' Runners up for the best hotel in the UK were No.15 Bath, by Guest House in Bath, The Grosvenor in Stockbridge, The Old Bell Hotel in Malmesbury and The Pig at Bridge Place in Canterbury. here.
