Slipper makers from Liliw, Laguna received free medical services from GMA Kapuso Foundation just in time for Hypertension Awareness Month this May.
According to '24 Oras' Friday, among the slipper makers from the municipality is Alma Dadis, who takes maintenance medicines for high blood pressure.
'Lagi pong nahihilo, nasakit ang ulo ko tsaka sa may batok,' Alma said.
Her coworker, Ruel Opeña, also shared his struggles with high blood pressure but mentioned prioritizing his child's needs as a single parent over getting checked by a doctor.
''Pag ako nagpapa-BP, mataas ang BP ko, 180 over 120,' Ruel said.
GMA Kapuso Foundation offered free ECG (electrocardiogram) tests to check for heart problems and hemoglobin A1C blood tests to determine their blood sugar levels over the past three months.
Consultations and health lectures were also part of the program.
'Ang normal po na blood pressure, according po sa American Heart Association 2024, hindi po hihigit sa 120 na systolic at hindi po hihigit sa 80 na diastolic pressure. Kapag po more than 130, hypertensive na po ang isang pasyente. Puwede pong magresulta po sa pagkakaroon ng sakit sa puso, sakit sa bato, at stroke kapag hindi po naagapan,' said Dra. Cristina Tabucan-Mendoza, an adult cardiologist and internal medicine specialist.
During the event, Ruel was indeed confirmed to have high blood pressure. He was prescribed and given medication.
'Advice po ay ituloy po natin 'yung monthly follow-up sa ating mga health center at sa main health center,' said Liliw Municipal Health Officer Dr. John Calvin Lagutin.
In addition to the medical services, the beneficiaries also received medicines, giveaways, food, and protective gloves, which they can use for work.
Meanwhile, the GMA Kapuso Foundation with the help of the Office of Civil Defense have sent relief goods to Maguinanao del Sur via a Philippine Air Force C-130 aircraft for those who have been affected by flooding due to the relentless rain.
The relief goods will be distributed to residents of Datu Abdullah Sangki this weekend.

PWDs, senior citizens in Samar receive wheelchairs, crutches from GMA Kapuso Foundation

GMA Kapuso Foundation distributed wheelchairs and crutches to persons with disabilities (PWDs) and senior citizens in San Sebastian, Samar, in observance of National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week, held annually on the third week of July. According to "24 Oras" report Monday, among the beneficiaries of the initiative was Bryan Mabingnay, a boatman who had his leg amputated in 2010 following a bike accident. To continue providing for his family, Bryan forged makeshift crutches from wood after his metal crutches broke. "'Yung sa isip ko, gumawa na lang ng kahoy kasi kaysa maghintay pa ko. Kahit kaunti kinikita, may pantawid lang sa pamilya," he said. Meanwhile, Bryan's neighbor Andy, whose legs have been affected by polio, crawls on his hands to walk. Despite his condition, he continues to work as a boatman and dives to catch fish. Through its initiative, the GMA Kapuso Foundation distributed wheelchairs, crutches, and hygiene kits to select PWDs and senior citizens. The foundation also crossed the waters by boat to deliver a wheelchair to Andy in Barangay Bontod. "Nasa fifth class municipality na po kami, makakatulong 'yun sa pang araw-araw na ginagawa nila," said Myla Nacion of the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office in San Sebastian, Samar. For those who wish to support GMA Kapuso Foundation's projects, donations may be made via Metrobank, Land Bank, BDO, Bank of Commerce, UnionBank, PNB, Cebuana Lhuillier, GCash, Lazada, and Shopee. GMA Kapuso Foundation kicks off feeding program for 300 children in Camarines Sur

GMA Kapuso Foundation, along with its partners and sponsors, kicked off the Give a Gift, Feed a Kid program for 300 undernourished children from six schools in Gainza, Camarines Sur. According to "24 Oras" Friday, among the beneficiaries of the feeding program is Carl. The seven-year-old boy only weighs 16 kilograms, which is considered underweight for his age. Per his teacher, Marlon Cuatro, Carl also struggles to read in class. GMA Kapuso Foundation EVP/COO Rikki Escudero-Catibog has said that a nutritionist created a special menu for the kids enrolled in the six-month feeding program. "Weekdays, tuwing papasok sila sa school nila, kumpleto 'yan, may protina, carbohydrates, and of course, vegetables," she shared. On the first day of the feeding program, the children were served rice and chicken afritada. They were also administered vitamins. "Malaki ang tulong nito para magkaroon sila ng laman ng tiyan pagpasok sa eskwela. Maraming maraming salamat for letting us share our blessings also to this community in Gainza," said Evan Chen, executive overall program head of Bounty Cares, "Layunin din na magcommit na tumulong sa ating mga communities, especially our underprivileged communities and to ensure na ang ating mga kababayan ay mayroong proper hydration," Ryan Co, head of legal and corporate affairs of Pacific Synergy, also said. 300 undernourished kids in Camarines Sur to benefit from GMA Kapuso Foundation's feeding program

Three hundred undernourished children in Gainza, Camarines Sur are set to benefit from GMA Kapuso Foundation's Give a Gift, Feed a Kid program. According to "24 Oras" on Wednesday, among the beneficiaries of the feeding program are the children of Jessica Adricula and Eliza Dominguez. Their families have resorted to eating rice field rats to alleviate hunger, especially when finances are tight. "Hinuhugan naman po naming nang maayos, talagang lutong-luto po siya bago namin kainin," said Eliza. However, Gainza Municipal Health Officer Dr. Ivan Phillip Albay said that the Department of Health does not suggest eating rice field rats. "Kasi most likely they are carriers of leptospirosis," he said. "Sa age five to 10, usually rich in protein dapat kasi talagang development years nila 'yun," he added. For Nutrition Month this July, GMA Kapuso Foundation will conduct a feeding program for three hundred children in Camarines Sur. The program will run for 120 days, providing the children with nutritious meals with help from the foundation's sponsors. The foundation held a deworming activity for the kids ahead of the feeding program. "Para po maalis 'yung mga parasites sa tiyan po kasi isa po 'to sa nagiging dahilan kung kaya't hindi tumataba ung bata, parang may kaagaw ba 'yung bata sa nutrisyon," said Gainza Municipal Nutrition Action Officer Carol Ivy Saballegue. For those who wish to support GMA Kapuso Foundation's projects, donations may be made via Metrobank, Land Bank, BDO, Bank of Commerce, UnionBank, PNB, Cebuana Lhuillier, GCash, Lazada, and Shopee.
