Fatih Akin's ‘Amrum' Debuts Teaser Ahead of World Premiere in Cannes (EXCLUSIVE)

Yahoo08-05-2025
The teaser for Fatih Akin's 'Amrum' has debuted ahead of the film's world premiere in the Cannes Premiere section of the Cannes Film Festival. Beta Cinema is handling world sales, with Warner Bros. distributing the film in Germany and Dulac Distribution in France.
The film is set on Amrum Island, off the coast of Germany, in spring 1945. In the final days of the war, 12-year-old Nanning braves the treacherous sea to hunt seals, goes fishing at night, and works on the nearby farm to help his mother feed the family. Despite the hardship, life on the beautiful, windswept island almost feels like paradise. But when peace finally comes, it reveals a deeper threat: the enemy is far closer than he imagined.

The film is based on the childhood of German actor, writer and director Hark Bohm, who wrote the original screenplay, which was then re-written and directed by Akin.
In a statement, Akin spoke about the cinematic influences on the film. 'The films that came to mind when Hark first told me the story were 'Bicycle Thieves' and 'Shoeshine' by Vittorio De Sica,' he said. 'The scenes where Nanning searches for driftwood at night made me think of 'The Night of the Hunter' by Charles Laughton. The whole film was supposed to breathe the spirit of 'Stand by Me' by Rob Reiner — thus, my cinematic upbringing became the first personal connection to the film.'
Jasper Billerbeck stars alongside Laura Tonke, Lisa Hagmeister, Kian Köppke, Lars Jessen, Detlev Buck, Jan Georg Schütte, Matthias Schweighöfer and Diane Kruger.
The producers are Akin and Herman Weigel. The film is produced by Bombero International and Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany, in co-production with Rialto Film. Karl Walter Lindenlaub is director of photography, and Andrew Bird is the editor.
Akin broke through in 2004 with 'Head-On,' which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. 'The Edge of Heaven' (2007) won best screenplay at Cannes, and 'Soul Kitchen' (2009) won the special jury prize at Venice. 'The Cut' (2014) premiered in competition at Venice. 'In the Fade' (2017) won best actress in Cannes for Kruger and the Golden Globe for best foreign language film. 'The Golden Glove' (2019) had its world premiere at Berlin Film Festival. His next film, 'Rheingold' (2022), drew over one million admissions in Germany.

Is Margot Robbie Returning As Harley Quinn In The DCU? New Report Offers Possible Answers

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The superhero genre is wildly popular, which is why various studios have their own shared universe. Co-CEO James Gunn is the creative architect of the new DCU, with the first slate of projects titled Gods and Monsters. Prior to this he worked on The Suicide Squad (streaming now with a HBO Max subscription), which was actually set in the now-ended DCEU. Fans have been wondering if Margot Robbie would be returning as Harley Quinn, and a new report might have offered some much-needed answers. Throughout the years Robbie played Harley three times in live action: Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and The Suicide Squad. While James Gunn confirmed a few heroes were sticking around, fans were left wondering about Robbie. A new report from THR's Heat Vision newsletter claimed that: Harley Quinn, theoretically but probably not, could still be played by James Gunn's The Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie. Obviously this is not a confirmation from the studio, and we might want to take it with a grain of salt. But since Gunn has never given any indication that he plans on collaborating again with Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn in the future, it's not looking great. Back in January of 2024, Gunn confirmed there were not plans to bring back Margot Robbie's Harley just yet. And while he expressed interest in working with her again, it's possible that her tenure as the beloved DC antihero has come to an end. HBO Max: Plans start from $9.99 a monthHBO Max is the streaming home for all things DC. Pay $9.99 a month for its With Ads plan, with three tiers available for an HBO Max subscription. You can also prepay for a year and save up to 20%.View Deal The same report claimed that Weapons director Zach Creggers working on a possible upcoming DC movie called Henchmen. It would focus on the lower level criminals who work for Gotham's villains, but would also feature Joker and Harley Quinn. It remains to be seen if this project comes together, and who would play the latter character. Personally, I wish that Margot Robbie would continue playing Harley Quinn in the DC Universe. She crushed the role under three different directors and three very different projects. And whoever possibly replaces her in the burgeoning shared universe is going to have some very big shoes to fill. So why not bring the Barbie star back for future projects as Ms. Quinzel? Perhaps James Gunn's plans for the character include a full reboot, with her once again serving as Joker's girlfriend and assistant. This would be a major step backward from the character development we saw from Robbie's version throughout the DCEU. I'm just spitballing here, but there are plenty of reasons why the Oscar nominee not might reprise her signature role. For now we'll just have to wait for some official word from James Gunn, Robbie, or the studio. The next DC movie expected to hit theaters is Supergirl on June 26th of next year as part of the 2026 movie release list.

Krypto the Superdog Gets His Own Animated Series

With Superman hitting digital this week, DC Studios is using the bonus features as a way to tease expanded content within its new universe. Key among the special selections for the Superman home release is a first look at a series of animated shorts starring Krypto the Superdog. In the spin-off series Krypto Saves the Day, the adorable rascal (still modeled on James Gunn's dog, Ozu) gets into his own heroic hijinks around Metropolis. The first of the shorts from Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios is School Bus Scuffle, written and directed by Ryan Kramer (Looney Tunes Cartoons). It just dropped online via Fandango and it's a soaring doggo delight. And that's not all! There will be more Krypto Saves the Day shorts coming soon: Halloween Havoc, Package Pandemonium, and Coastal Catastrophe. According to Warner Bros., the shorts will roll out individually through 2026. Warner Bros. also shared images from those seasonally themed tales: We're excited to watch more and love that the animated Krypto keeps the same mannerisms (and signature ear that sticks up) that Ozu inspired in Superman. Superman hits digital platforms August 15. A physical release is coming September 23. Want more io9 news?
