SFI to boycott classes on July 10 protesting against Kerala Governor

The Hindu09-07-2025
The Students' Federation of India (SFI) has announced that it will boycott classes on Thursday (July 10, 2025) to protest against Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar's 'attempt to saffronise State-funded universities' in Kerala.
SFI State president M. Sivaprasad told reporters on Wednesday that college and school students allied with the SFI would cut classes and march to Central government offices across the State against Mr. Arlekar's attempt to 'undermine the autonomy of public-funded universities in the State.'
Mr. Sivaprasad also warned that SFI activists would boycott 'temporary Vice-Chancellors' appointed by Raj Bhavan to 'pursue Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) Hindu majoritarian, anti-minority, right-wing nationalist, revanchist and divisive higher education sector agenda.'
He accused the Kerala Students Union (KSU) of turning its back on the widespread protests for 'democracy and secularism' on campuses. He accused Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan of reining in the KSU to aid the RSS.
The SFI stated that the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were in collusion within the State's higher education sector. 'Notably, the Chancellor had nominated Congress and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leaders to the Calicut varsity senate. The Senate members have since been permanent fixtures at RSS programmes,' Mr. Sivaprasad said.
Slams Satheesan
The SFI took strong exception to Mr. Satheesan's purported statement that the SFI protests at the Kerala University campus in Thiruvananthapuram were hooliganism abetted by the police.
Mr. Sivaprasad said the SFI 'did not need the cover of power' to fight for its causes, as Mr Satheesan had alleged. 'As many as 30 SFI leaders are in judicial remand for protesting against the Governor's bid to saffronise higher education at the Senate Hall campus in Thiruvananthapuram recently. Many sustained injuries after grappling with police', he said.
Mr. Sivaprasad accused Mr. Satheesan of being 'a covert RSS sympathiser.'
'Mr. Satheesan genuflecting before a portrait of an RSS ideologue at a Sangh Parivar function is still viral on social media,' he added.
Satheesan reiterates stance
Meanwhile, Mr. Satheesan reiterated his stance that the SFI had disrupted varsity functioning and imperilled the future of students by trespassing on the Senate Hall office with law enforcement's 'tacit approval'.
He told reporters in Kochi that SFI workers had singled out KSU activists for attacks on college campuses.
Mr. Satheesan said the Congress was in the forefront of the fight against the Governor's bid to saffronise State-funded universities, and that the Opposition 'did not require the SFI's endorsement.'

Sarvai Papanna Goud Remembered on his 375 birth Anniversary, MLA Yennam Srinivas Reddy paid rich tributes

Mahbubnagar: Mahbubnagar MLA Yennam Srinivas Reddy paid rich tributes to legendary Bahujan warrior Sardar Sarvai Papanna Goud on his 375th birth anniversary in Mahabubnagar on Monday. Garlanding Papanna's statue in the district, the MLA describied him as a true revolutionary who proved that when the oppressed and Bahujans unite, they can achieve political power. At a program held at Padmavati Colony, Green Belt in Mahbubnagar, the MLA garlanded Papanna's statue and recalled his remarkable contribution to social justice and people's empowerment nearly 350 years ago. Speaking on the occasion, the MLA said that Papanna was the first Bahujan king who, in the 17th century, raised his own army, fought against feudal lords and jagirdars, and established a Bahujan kingdom with Khilashapur as his capital. 'Papanna Goud dreamt of a society without caste, religious, or communal divisions and stood as a symbol of courage and social justice, much before Mahatma Jyotirao Phule,' he said. He narrated how Papanna united Bahujans, Dalits, and minorities, formed a guerrilla army, looted the wealth of landlords, and distributed it among the poor. In 1675, he established his rule with Sarvaipet as the center and expanded his territory by capturing several estates. After Aurangzeb's death, Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah recognized Papanna's authority and even offered him a treaty, making him ruler of Golconda Fort. 'For the first time, the Bahujan flag fluttered atop Golconda Fort,' the MLA added. However, unable to tolerate his rule, landlords and feudal chiefs conspired with the Mughal rulers to dethrone him. Though Papanna fought valiantly, he was severely injured, and his death remains shrouded in legend. 'Yet, he lives forever in the hearts of Telangana's people as a symbol of Bahujan pride and resistance,' said Srinivas Reddy. The MLA announced that the Telangana government, under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and PCC Chief Mahesh Kumar Goud, would officially organize Papanna's birth and death anniversaries. He also revealed plans to install a statue of Papanna at Tank Bund, Hyderabad, and to set up his statues in villages across Telangana so that future generations learn about his history. Highlighting the Congress government's commitment to social justice, he reminded that the Assembly had already passed a resolution providing 42% reservation for Backward Classes, though the BJP-led central government opposed it. 'We fought in Delhi to ensure Bahujan rights, and we will continue the struggle,' he asserted. The event was attended by Minority Finance Corporation Chairman Obaidullah Kotwal, District Collector Vijayendra Boi, TPCC General Secretary Mithun Reddy, District Library Chairman Mallu Narasimha Reddy, Market Committee Chairperson Bekkari Anita Madhusudan Reddy, former Municipal Chairman Anand Goud, and several other leaders and dignitaries.

Opposition protests against SIR in Parliament complex

NEW DELHI: Several opposition MPs of INDIA bloc parties held a protest in the Parliament House complex on Monday against the Election Commission's voter roll revision in Bihar. Led by Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, the MPs of INDIA bloc raised "vote chor, gaddi chhor" and "vote chori band karo" slogans. They also held a big banner that read "vote chori" and held posters demanding "stop SIR". Leaders of Congress, TMC, DMK, Left parties and RJD and Samajwadi Party were seen holding posters and banners right outside the Makar Dwar of Parliament. Amid speculation that the opposition is mulling an impeachment motion against CEC Gyanesh Kumar, Congress leader Naseer Hussain told reporters they would use every democratic method to ensure that the Chief Election Commissioner should be a person who is "unbiased". The opposition has been protesting in both Houses of Parliament against the SIR, alleging that the EC's exercise is aimed at "disenfranchising voters" in Bihar ahead of the assembly elections due later this year. They have been demanding a discussion on the issue in both Houses. Barring discussions on Operation Sindoor in the two Houses, Parliament has seen little business ever since the Monsoon session began on July 21 due to repeated adjournments, mostly over the SIR issue.

Air India cancels Zurich-Delhi flight citing technical issue

MUMBAI: Air India on Monday said it cancelled its Zurich-Delhi flight of August 17 due to a technical reason, days after the Tata Group-owned airline stated that it had carried out a detailed "inspection" of its Boeing 787 aircraft fleet and "no issues" were detected. However, a passenger on board said the flight aborted take-off at the last minute due to an engine issue. In the last two days, Air India has cancelled at least two flights, including one international, at the last moment, citing technical reasons. Air India operates its Boeing 787-8/9 aircraft fleet to cater to the European market. "Flight AI152 scheduled to operate from Zurich to Delhi on 17 August has been cancelled due to a technical reason, and subsequently due to night curfew in Zurich," Air India said in a statement. The airline said it has arranged alternative flights to the passengers' destination and is providing hotel accommodation, along with full refunds on cancellations or complimentary rescheduling options for the passengers. "Air India flight from Zurich to Delhi is cancelled: aborted moments before take-off, technical issue in engine cited," said the passenger in a post on X. A Delhi-bound Air India plane, carrying Lok Sabha Member and Congress leader Hibi Eden among others, aborted take-off at the Kochi airport on Sunday due to a technical issue, officials said. Earlier, the airline was forced to cancel its Milan-Delhi flight owing to a technical issue which was detected during pushback. The airline, which came under private hands in January 2022, has recently been delaying and cancelling some flights at the last minute due to technical and maintenance issues. This comes despite repeated assurances from Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson that the airline has carried out comprehensive checks on its Boeing 787 aircraft fleet. In a message to the customers recently, while listing out the various steps taken after the fatal crash of an AI-171 flight to London soon after take-off from the Ahmedabad airport, Wilson said detailed inspections of its Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft were done and "no issues were found during inspection".
