First Match of the Day lineup after Gary Lineker's exit is revealed with TWO legendary England strikers on the punditry panel - as new hosts all vow not to post about controversial issues

Daily Mail2 days ago
The first Match of the Day lineup since Gary Lineker's departure has been revealed, according to reports.
Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan and Kelly Cates will begin hosting duties on the BBC 's flagship football show this weekend as the new Premier League season kicks off with reigning champions Liverpool against Bournemouth on Friday.
It marks a new direction for the programme after Lineker, who was the mainstay presenter for 26 years on Match of the Day, waved farewell after being axed by the BBC in May over a social media post he shared which ignited an antisemitism row.
Only one of the three presenters will take part in Saturday's season curtain-raiser, given the trio have agreed to share hosting responsibilities throughout the campaign.
According to the Telegraph, Chapman will host the show and be joined by pundits Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney.
Cates, meanwhile, is scheduled to host the BBC's coverage of European football next week.
Shearer was a regular fixture on Match of the Day during the latter stages of Lineker's 26-year stint and continues to work with his former England team-mate on various podcasts including The Rest is Football.
Rooney is set to sit alongside Shearer on the maiden Match of the Day for the 2025-26 season, having signed a new deal with the Beeb as he awaits the next opportunity in his managerial career.
The England legend has yet to return to management since being sacked by Plymouth in 2024, which came after disappointing spells at DC United and Birmingham City.
Ahead of the first show, the new Match of the Day hosts replacing Lineker have promised not to post about controversial issues on social media.
Prior to his Match of the Day departure, the 64-year-old presenter shared an Instagram story about Zionism featuring a rat - a symbol used by the Nazis to characterise Jews as vermin.
Lineker, who apoligised, deleted the post and admitted his departure from Match of the Day was the 'responsible course of action' back in May, left without a payoff from his £1.4million-a-year salary.
The antisemitism row is understood to have been the final straw for BBC bosses after Lineker made a habit of posting about a range of controversial issues, from the war in Gaza to the government's immigration policy.
Chapman, Logan and Cates have vowed to steer clear of posting about controversial topics, keeping in line with the BBC's social media guidelines.

Logan told Radio Times: 'I've been conducting myself on social media while working at the BBC for nearly two decades.
'The broadcaster is probably under the most scrutiny of any in the country because of the way it's funded and because it's accountable to the public. That's how it should be. We strive to have the highest standards. Hopefully, we'll just get on with our jobs.'
Cates added: 'I don't think I've ever really weighed in that much on anything that isn't either about football or something quite silly. That's not how I've ever used social media.
'It helps that we're all really different from Gary, in that he goes in with a profile of his own as an England legend. It's a very different career path. An ex-player taking over would be a more direct comparison.'

Peter Crouch makes bold Benjamin Sesko prediction with Viktor Gyokeres comparison

Manchester United only landed Benjamin Sesko after Arsenal opted to sign Viktor Gyokeres instead, but Peter Crouch believes that the former may prove a bigger hit in the Premier League Peter Crouch is backing Benjamin Sesko to hit the ground running in the Premier League. Sesko has joined Manchester United in a £74m deal from RB Leipzig and will play alongside Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in a new-look £200m attack. ‌ The 22-year-old got 21 goals in 45 games for Leipzig last season and is one of a handful of exciting new strikers in the league. 'The favourites for the Golden Boot will be Alexander Isak, if he gets his situation sorted out, Erling Haaland and Mo Salah, the same old faces,' Crouch told Mirror Football. ‌ 'But out of the new faces, Sesko is the one that I like watching. I'm excited by him. There's still the fact that he hasn't played in the Premier League and that is something that you have to look at. ‌ 'Can he settle straight away? But he's the player that excites me the most out of the new signings.' Sesko has landed at Old Trafford after Arsenal opted to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon instead. The Gunners paid £64m for the ex-Coventry man, who netted a staggering 54 times in 52 games for Sporting last season. Gyokeres was considered by Ruben Amorim for a reunion at United, but will instead work under Mikel Arteta this season. Arsenal scouted Sesko heavily over the past few seasons before going for Gyokeres, yet Crouch is more excited by the Slovenia international. 'Obviously he's a proven goal scorer. I know someone who worked with him when he was in England previously,' the ex-Liverpool striker said of Gyokeres ahead of United vs Arsenal on Sunday. 'It was strange that he was let go. He went out to Sporting and banged in loads of goals and I'm sure he can do the same for Arsenal. But how quickly will he settle? ‌ 'It strikes me that Sesko is the man to hit the ground running. You just never know. If he gets a couple of goals then he'll be full of confidence, he could go on a mad run because he's more than capable of it.' United have invested heavily at the top end of the pitch after managing a measly 44 goals in 38 games as they finished 15th last season. Alongside Sesko, they have gone for proven Premier League quality in the form of Cunha, who scored 15 times in the league for Wolves in 2024/25, and Mbeumo, who bagged 20 goals for Brentford. ‌ HAVE YOUR SAY! Who will score more goals this season: Benjamin Sesko or Viktor Gyokeres? Comment below. Crouch thinks that their new firepower can propel United well up the table this season. 'There are some great signings,' he said. 'But the forward line needed work, didn't it? It was misfiring all last season and Bruno Fernandes got them out of a real hole at times. 'Cunha and Mbeumo – it's not like they haven't played in the Premier League, they were both brilliant and scored a lot of goals last season. And Sesko is a top player. 'I think they will be a force. It was an awful year for them last year. I think there will be a huge improvement and they will finish in and around the top six.' Peter Crouch was speaking ahead of Paddy Power's most generous start to a season ever.
