Wrexham immediately 'target' ex-Arsenal star loved by Steven Gerrard after £10m transfer

Wrexham are said to be considering a move for former Arsenal defender Calum Chambers, who was highly praised during his time at Aston Villa by then-manager Steven Gerrard Wrexham have turned their attentions to making a swoop for a former Arsenal star who's loved by Steven Gerrard after completing a £10million move for Nathan Broadhead. The Hollywood-backed club broke their transfer record for the third time this summer after signing the Ipswich Town forward on Thursday. ‌ No sooner had the ink dried on that deal than reports emerged that Wrexham are now eyeing former Gunners centre-back Calum Chambers as their next recruit. Despite already bringing in nine new faces, manager Phil Parkinson is understood to be eager to land at least one additional defender before the transfer window shuts. ‌ Chambers started his career at Southampton as a youngster before moving to Arsenal in the summer of 2014. The 30-year-old made 122 appearances for the Premier League side, then left to sign for Aston Villa in January 2022. ‌ He currently plays for Cardiff City in League One and, according to talkSPORT, has attracted the attention of Championship new boys Wrexham. Chambers only signed for the Bluebirds last year but suffered relegation during his first campaign. Despite having two years left on his contract and starting Cardiff's first two games of the season, he is also understood to be of interest to Wrexham's second-tier rivals, Sheffield United. Chambers' adaptability is said to make him an attractive prospect to Parkinson, with the seasoned defender able to slot into various roles, including in a three-man backline. During his time at Villa Park, he earned praise from the club's then-manager Steven Gerrard. The Liverpool legend hailed Chambers' qualities after he rounded off a 3-0 league win against Leeds United in March 2022 with a stunning goal. "He's been class, on and off the pitch," Gerrard said. "He's been a real pleasure to work with. I thought that was the knockout blow tonight, to get the third goal in the way that we did it. "That was the knockout blow and from that moment it was about keeping a clean sheet and everyone defensively getting their buzz out of it as well because everyone's responsible for scoring goals and everyone's got to be responsible for keeping the ball out as well." ‌ Chambers, who was recently handed the captain's armband at Cardiff, was quizzed last week about the setback of dropping down a division in his debut season. While news of Wrexham's interest had yet to emerge, he maintained his commitment to his current club at the time. "I'm happy to be here," he said. "You can't predict what's gonna happen in football. You've just got to enjoy the journey and that's what I'm doing. The manager's been amazing since he's come in. ‌ "Pre-season has gone really well. Everyone is buzzing, the boys are really excited, with the style and the identity we have now, I think it works amazingly with the group and the players that we have. "I feel there's a real identity about us and and a path going forward in the way we want to play. The vibe around the place is really good." Sign up to our newsletter! Broadhead fee reflects 'real Championship quality'

Manager Phil Parkinson says Wrexham had to break their own transfer record to get "real Championship quality" in signing Nathan forward Broadhead, 27, has joined from Ipswich Town on a four-year deal which could eventually be worth £ previous record transfer fee was believed to be in excess of £3m when they signed midfielder Lewis O'Brien from Nottingham Forest in July."The fee has been out there at £10m but I think we have to get to the Premier League and win the Champions League to get to that," Parkinson told BBC Sport Wales."But it's a price for a player of real Championship quality."The fee with Ipswich had been agreed a for a long time, obviously they wanted to sign a player so we had to be patient."But they've been fair and both parties are happy with the deal." Bangor-born Broadhead was in the final year of his contract with Ipswich, where he scored 23 goals in 83 season Broadhead, who started his professional career at Everton, scored two goals in 18 Premier League games for Kieran McKenna's side."He's just got that Championship pedigree, the ability to create something in tight situations, you need players to unlock the door and create key moments in games and Nathan's got that," Parkinson added."He's shown it at Ipswich at levels over the past few seasons and obviously the story of him coming home is a great one as well."He was really keen to come here and I'm really looking forward to working with him." Broadhead is Wrexham's ninth signing since they were promoted from League One last season – their third successive automatic Dragons have broken their transfer record on numerous occasions since Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took control of the club in acknowledged the backing of the club's owners in preparing a squad to compete in the Championship this season."I think it's key - there's a lot of spending power in the division," Parkinson said."I think from day one we've moved so quickly and we've always had to work hard as a club to fast track the quality level for the first team as we've always played catch-up."But we've come to this division very quickly and it's important that we bought in Championship standard players to help us on this journey and also assist the existing players who've done so well over the last few years."

Ruben Amorim reveals alternative if Man Utd don't sign Carlos Baleba

Ruben Amorim has named Mason Mount as an option in central midfield if Manchester United fail to strengthen in the middle of the park. United have rebuilt their attack with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko arriving at Old Trafford this summer, along with young talent Diego Leon at left-back. But issues remain unresolved in midfield – an area of the pitch that caused United major problems last season. Questions remain over Casemiro's ability to withstand the pace of the Premier League after another draining campaign last term while Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte have seldom shown promise as a midfield duo. Toby Collyer has been given the green light to join West Brom on loan with Bruno Fernandes expected to get more games in a deeper role. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. United are eager to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton but could be priced out of a move this summer. The Seagulls value the 21-year-old at £100million and while the midfielder is thought to be keen on the move, any deal may have to wait until this time next year. While Sporting CP star Morten Hjulmand has been linked, there does not appear to a genuine alternative to Baleba in mind. In any case, Amorim is prepared to make do with what he has at his disposal – viewing Mount as another option. 'I'm really happy with our players, they are working really well, we have different players for that position, so we are prepared to win any game with our players,' Amorim told a press conference ahead of the Premier League clash with Arsenal on Sunday. 'Maybe Mason Mount is a player that can play in that position if we want something different. 'But then we are going to find out during the season. But we have players to cope and win games in the Premier League.' More Trending Mount has largely operated in an attacking midfield role for Chelsea, England and United. Amorim is a huge admirer of the 26-year-old who has endured an injury-hit spell in Manchester since arriving from Stamford Bridge in 2024. Mount picked up a hamstring injury early on in Amorim's tenue last year but returned late in the campaign, scoring twice in the Europa League semi-final win over Athletic Club.
