Former Washington Football Star Shines in Steelers Debut

USA Today11 hours ago
In his first preseason game for the Pittsburgh Steelers, former Washington linebacker Carson Bruener showed he is worthy of a roster spot. The son of ex-Steelers tight end Mark Bruener and seventh-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft led the way with 7 total tackles (5 solo) to help lift coach Mike Tomlin's team to a 31-25 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday night. Bruener, a team captain and starting linebacker for the Huskies in 2024, had a handful of tackles on special teams in his NFL debut, an area where the Steelers' legacy could make an impact as a rookie.
Over his five seasons at UW, the 6-foot-1, 227-pounder proved himself capable as a special teams enforcer, earning team MVP honors for the Huskies' unit in 2023 as he waited his turn at linebacker behind a pair of veterans, Edefuan Ulofoshio and Alphonzo Tuputala.
"Special teams is something I started playing at the University of Washington early in my career and is something I embrace and really fell in love with," Bruener told Steelers.com after being drafted in April.
"It's something I have been able to do my whole career and excel at. I know that is something I am going to be able to bring to Pittsburgh for sure."
Recently, the UW captain in 2024 was viewed as a potential cut candidate by Mark Kaboly, a long-time Steelers beat writer who covers the team for the Pat McAfee Show. The performance should give the rookie a boost of confidence as he continues to make a push to earn a roster spot when final cuts come down on August 26.

Mike Tomlin confirms he knew Packers legend Aaron Rodgers was signing with Steelers pre-NFL Draft

Mike Tomlin confirms he knew Packers legend Aaron Rodgers was signing with Steelers pre-NFL Draft originally appeared on The Sporting News The Pittsburgh Steelers have built their roster to make a serious run at the Super Bowl in what is widely believed to be Aaron Rodgers' final NFL season. Rodgers has been putting in work at training camp, and ESPN analyst Ryan Clark believes the veteran is starting to look like his former Super Bowl-winning self. 'I can confirm it AaronRodgers can still really throw the football… it's crazy in person! 2010-11 Super Bowl Flashbacks,' Clark posted. The Steelers' decision to wait until the offseason to sign Rodgers may have actually benefited the franchise, as it resulted in a lighter primetime schedule than if he had signed earlier. 'The Steelers not having a QB yet — and the uncertainty around Aaron Rodgers — may have worked in their favor. They got just 4 primetime games. If Rodgers had signed, they likely would've had 6+ and some holiday slots like the Jets had the last two years, which would've made for a much more unbalanced schedule,' Ari Meirov said. Pittsburgh showed notable patience throughout the process, and it's believed Rodgers gave them some kind of verbal commitment. 'I just think verbally, behind the scenes, not that he guaranteed it, but he's told [the Steelers], 'Listen, I'm gonna play for you. I just don't want to go there and then miss part of mandatory minicamp because of my personal issues. I'm pretty sure they're gonna be solved by the end of May, at least in my satisfaction where I can give you my all,'' Ian O'Connor said. Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp On The Pivot Podcast, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed that he knew Rodgers was coming, which is why the team didn't aggressively pursue a quarterback in the draft. 'Everything that we talked about through our conversations in the spring, I'm watching him live out right now in this training camp setting. I believed him when he said it, but it's fun to watch play out,' Tomlin said. 'And you're right I knew something.' Clark had asked him if he knew something was going to happen as to why they waited so long in the draft, to which Tomlin admitted he knew. This inside knowledge explains the team's calm demeanor throughout the lengthy negotiation process. It also sheds light on why the Steelers waited until later in the draft to select Will Howard. While fans and analysts were panicking, the organization knew something big was in the works.

A'ja Wilson shocked at becoming first WNBA player with a 30-20 double-double

LAS VEGAS (AP) — There was only one way Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon could describe reigning WNBA MVP A'ja Wilson becoming the first player in league history to register a 30-20 double-double. 'It's just A'ja being A'ja,' she said. She shook her head in awe. 'She probably could have had one of these in the past,' Hammon added. 'I never let her really go to the offensive glass this year, where we've been emphasizing that more.' Wilson finished with 32 points on 13-of-25 shooting to go along with her second-career 20-rebound night, leading the Aces to a 94-86 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday night. It was her 14th double-double of the season. 'It's huge,' said Wilson, who registered her 30th career 30-point game and sixth this season. 'I didn't even know, as many greats as we have in this league, it's kind of a shocker that it's just now happening. It's a blessing. I love what I do. I love what I do. I love it so much, so anytime that I can come out and just play basketball the way that I love it, and the team, and we're all getting involved — I'm happy with that.' Teammate Jackie Young said Wilson never ceases to amaze. 'Every night she shows up, and I think that's why she's so great at what she does,' Young said. 'She's a super hard worker, so it's cool to see her hard work pay off. At the same time, they're bringing double teams to her, triple teams to her, and she's having to navigate that and play out of it. She's still able to put up insane numbers every night.' Wilson, who this season became the fastest and second-youngest player to score 5,000 career points, ranks first for 30-point games since entering the league in 2018. 'It's pretty cool to have my name in the record books when it comes to that,' said Wilson, who turned 29 on Friday. 'I'm pretty sure there's going to be a lot following up. So yeah, it's pretty cool to kind of be the first one.' ____ AP WNBA: W.g. Ramirez, The Associated Press
