Restart review of projects in Pune, Supriya Sule tells Ajit Pawar after inspecting under-construction bridge
She said, 'I remember the current guardian minister, who held the position even during the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) rule, used to review the projects in the Pune district every Friday. I don't know why it is not done now, but it is my request that he should restart the reviewing of projects every week and address the problems in implementations.'
On Wednesday, Sule inspected a bridge being built by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) over the Mutha River in Pune. This bridge runs parallel to the existing river bridge on the Mumbai-Bengaluru bypass, and it falls in her Baramati Lok Sabha constituency. The work on the project has been halted due to a change in the road design on both sides of the river.
'The NHAI informed that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) was not cooperating on the acquisition of land for the bypass road on either side of the river as per the requirement of the new plan for widening the road from the Navale bridge to Warje. This has led to a bottleneck,' said Sule after doing the site visit.
Sule also criticised the Mahayuti government for going ahead with the Nagpur-Goa Shaktipeeth Expressway project by taking a loan of Rs 86,000 crore at an alleged high interest rate. 'The state finance ministry has expressed concern over taking a loan for the project as it will deteriorate the financial condition of the state. The state is unable to meet the financial demands of teachers, farmers and pay the contractors for work completed, then why draw a loan for a road project which is not an emergency,' she said.
The Maharashtra Cabinet in June approved the acquisition of land for the six-lane Shaktipeeth Expressway project, which was halted due to farmers' protests in Kolhapur in 2024.
Sule also said that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has not responded to her despite her raising the issues of Hinjewadi. 'The Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi provides employment to six lakh people directly or indirectly. The state government is not serious about the global centre and resolving its issues,' she said, adding that this might adversely impact the industries' response in the state.

TDSAT to take a call on Trai fine on telcos for failing to curb spam
New Delhi: The Telecom Disputes Settlement & Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) is likely to take a decision next week on whether telecom operators need to pay nearly Rs 141 crore as penalty to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) for not curbing spam. Independence Day 2025 Modi signals new push for tech independence with local chips Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave India its own currency The tribunal is hearing the matter after telcos challenged the Trai, arguing that they should not be penalised for the time when the anti-spam platform was being implemented. At the last hearing held on August 8, the regulator had filed an affidavit containing the requisite details sought by the tribunal, and the next hearing is scheduled for August 20. The telcos are also expected to submit their response to the affidavit. The regulator had levied penalties on all three private telcos - Reliance Jio , Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea - as well as state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) for failing to control spam. However, the operators challenged the levy arguing that the regulator should not have slapped the penalties when an anti-spam platform was still being developed. Live Events The TDSAT had stayed Trai's penalties in January. The fines were levied as part of the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2018. The telcos argued that the delay in implementation of spam control measures was caused due to Covid-19 and that they were not responsible for it. To support their point, they submitted details to the TDSAT stating that when Trai imposed the penalties, the digital consent acquisition (DCA) platform was still being deployed. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had already rejected the demand for Trai to encash bank guarantees of telcos for not paying the fine. While staying the penalties in its January 28 order, the TDSAT observed that telecom firms were not responsible for the delay in implementation of the regulations, including the DCA. "Thus, it is unfair and arbitrary on the part of the respondent to impose financial disincentives on the appellants (telcos) for something which was beyond their control," it said in the order. While the issue of spam has been tackled by multiple stakeholders, the results remain less than satisfactory. The telcos have been asking for telemarketers to be brought under regulatory control, a move supported by the DoT but so far, Trai is yet to move on the issue. Trai's current mechanism to curb spam communications puts the onus on telcos to check the menace, while telemarketers, who are at the heart of aggregating and disseminating commercial messages using telco channels, are not under any regulatory ambit, and practically not accountable, said industry experts. Trai currently levies fines on telcos for spam messages and calls on their networks. Telcos have commercial binding agreements with telemarketers and, as per Trai, operators should recover the penalty from telemarketers.

Overcrowding in jails: HC seeks affidavit on status
Raipur: The Chhattisgarh high court has directed the state director general of prisons and correctional services to submit a fresh personal affidavit on the status of overcrowding in jails across Chhattisgarh. It has also asked for an updated progress report on the construction of additional barracks and appointment of welfare officers. A division bench of Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Bibhu Datta Guru issued the directive while hearing a batch of public interest litigations on prison conditions. The court took note of the affidavit filed by the DG (Prisons), which revealed that as of Aug 5, 2025, there were 20,500 inmates lodged in 33 jails against a sanctioned capacity of 14,883. The affidavit stated that while additional barracks have been completed in Central Jail in Raipur and Ambikapur, and district jails in Mahasamund and and Jashpur, work is underway in several other prisons, including Raipur, Durg, and Surajpur. The DG also informed that the open jail at Bemetara is nearing completion, with pending electrical and ancillary works expected to be finished by the end of Aug. The report further mentioned ongoing projects, including new jails at Godhi (Raipur) and Baima Nagoi (Bilaspur), and budgetary allocations of over Rs 31crore for 31 additional barracks in 21 jails across the state. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If you have a mouse, you have to play this game. Navy Quest Game Undo Amicus curiae Sunil Pillai highlighted that welfare officers — crucial for ensuring prisoners' access to legal remedies — are posted in only four to five jails, while the majority of district jails continue to face vacancies. The bench expressed concern over this gap, noting that the absence of welfare officers hampers inmates' awareness of their legal rights. The court has asked the state govt to take immediate steps to address this issue and directed the DG (Prisons) to file a fresh affidavit before the next hearing on Sept 16. China hoarding its tech riches fiercely
Amid expectations of a thaw in ties as Prime Minister Narendra Modi heads to China for his first visit there in seven years, people with knowledge of the matter pointed out that Beijing hasn't been in a hurry to clear partnership deals between companies in the two countries, especially when it comes to transferring critical technology. Independence Day 2025 Modi signals new push for tech independence with local chips Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave India its own currency Chinese appliance maker Haier's bid to sell a stake of 48-50% in its wholly-owned Indian operations has been delayed by over two months as the government there is vetting deal terms and conditions, including technology transfer, a person aware of the details said. Bharti Group chairman Sunil Mittal has signed an exclusivity agreement with Haier to acquire the stake and most formalities have been completed, the person said. Another technology transfer deal awaiting Chinese government approval involves Indian electronic contract manufacturer PG Electroplast for air-conditioner compressors. "In the next one or two months, we will have some more clarity on this," Vishal Gupta, managing director, finance, at PG Electroplast, told analysts last week. PG Electroplast hasn't yet disclosed the name of the partner for this project but people in the know said it's China's top compressor manufacturer Highly Group. Gupta further said he was in China three weeks ago and had a discussion with the partner. "It is held up at their end right now. Everything is ready (here)," he said. Beijing has also stepped up scrutiny on transaction in the automobile sector with regard to how much electric vehicle technology is being shared "China has the lead in electric vehicle technology, and they do not want it to permeate to other geographies," said an industry executive. An electronics industry executive said companies in China have informed potential partners about "verbal" instructions from their government that any deal on technology transfer with overseas companies needs to be scrutinized. "This is especially true for deals involving mid to large Chinese companies," he said. That's delaying business plans of Indian companies that are highly reliant on Chinese technology and components. PG Electroplast's management told analysts that the delay might push the compressor project, which was supposed to be operational in FY26, into next year. The company has therefore reduced its capex guidance for this year from Rs 900 crore to Rs 700-750 crore. The compressor plant building is almost ready and it will order the machinery once the partner gets Chinese approval. India's leading auto parts and electronic companies such as Sona Comstar, Dixon Technologies , Epack Durable Ltd and Bhagwati Products are in the process of setting up joint ventures or technical alliances with Chinese companies. Lumax Autotech is looking at setting up an engineering, sourcing and capability development hub in China to stay abreast of new trends and technologies. A senior auto industry executive said the Chinese government knows it has a trump card because the companies are key players in EV technology and the supply chain. "They are putting curbs to retain control, stay ahead, negotiate, like in the case of rare earths with the United States. In India too, we scrutinise Chinese investments under Press Note 3 (PN3). They have started doing the same for tech agreements," he said. Indian companies have sought relaxations in PN3 approvals from the Indian government to build local manufacturing competence in components. PN3 was introduced amid border tensions by the Indian government in 2020 mandating multi-ministry clearance for equity deals for companies sharing a land border with India, such as China. Another executive said Chinese companies have always been conservative when it comes to selling stakes in overseas operations or doing large technology transfer agreements. "So, the government wants to ensure China retains the right to control the technology," he said. Bilateral relations have improved since then and Prime Minister Modi's visit comes in the backdrop of US President Donald Trump's tariff threats against both nations. India and China are planning to commence discussions on a trade package covering supplies of critical rare earth magnets, fertilisers and pharmaceuticals, ET reported recently.
