BJP slams Kerala police for arresting YouTuber Shajan Skaria over defamatory content about woman
Thiruvananthapuram:The BJP on Tuesday criticised the Kerala police for arresting YouTuber Shajan Skaria over allegations of airing defamatory content, calling it a violation of constitutional rights and freedom of the press.
The act of arresting a person at night while he was having dinner and not allowing him to change his clothes is proof of the ruling Communist party's "intolerance" towards constitutional rights and freedom of the press, the party said.
In a hard-hitting statement, BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar said the saffron party would never accept such authoritarian measures.
"These rights are being blatantly violated in the states ruled by the INDIA Alliance, which talks eloquently about constitutional rights and freedom of expression and free press," he alleged.
YouTuber Skaria was arrested on Monday night by the cyber police based on a complaint from a woman who alleged that he broadcast defamatory content about her.
The leader further said the BJP would not tolerate any action that violated the constitutional rights of not only Skaria but anyone from Kerala.
The BJP will resist and defeat such moves at any cost, he said.
Alleging that the police had arrested Skaria at midnight to keep him in custody, Chandrasekhar said the police, however, could not do that.
The BJP is strongly opposed to the "police raj" in Kerala, he added.
A woman, currently residing abroad, had lodged a complaint against Shajan Skaria, accusing him of "airing defamatory content".
She also gave a statement against him in a court under Section 164 of the CrPC, police added.
Following the complaint, Skaria was taken into custody from his residence, the police said.
He has been charged under non-bailable Sections 75(1) (making sexually coloured remarks) and 79 (acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Section 67 of the Information Technology (IT) Act, and Section 120(o) of the Kerala Police (KP) Act, they said.
The YouTuber was released on bail by a court later, sources added.

Given that the MGR-founded party is facing an identity and existential crisis in its 53rd year of existence, the cobbling together of the alliance with smaller parties being wooed establishes the fact that the saffron party is happy to ride piggyback on the Dravidian big brother this time around. Amit Shah's latest statement that the new alliance will sweep the 2026 polls has not entirely been rejected by the political pundits and as expected, pooh poohed by the DMK leaders. Its top-rung icons say that if the Dravidian ideology resonates with the people, it is nigh impossible for the BJP to set its foot in Tamil Nadu. While a few still consider the earlier elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls as a 'lost opportunity' for the BJP to have made inroads into the Tamil psyche, the highly unpopular way the administration has gone about its business has made the average public take a critical look at the goings-on in the State. Dynastic politics – that of Udayanidhi being groomed to take over from the present CM, M K Stalin - is still being helplessly accepted by the party machinery and followers as a 'natural' progression of the first family in retaining power. What is not left unnoticed is the increased presence of Karunanidhi's daughter and the CM's step-sister Kanimozhi in the central scheme of things, Stalin's blow hot blow cold with Modi government and the stench of corruption in the governance of the State which has been allowed to grow (the TASMAC case, for one), for a surgical strike later by the central machinery, closer to the poll dates. It is surely a work in progress for the non-DMK formation, but it is a known fact that the DMK has till date never managed a second successive stint in office. Will they break the jinx this time or will a currently docile anti-DMK alliance spring a surprise? If it is the final chance for the AIADMK to retain its political relevance, it is also the best-ever opportunity for the BJP in nearly five decades to make its presence felt in the state's corridors of power. Whether they can make or mar will be in the hands of the Tamil electorate.

Ludhiana West bypoll: Drug allegations fly as AAP, BJP lock horns
With the Ludhiana West byelection scheduled for June 19, political temperatures have soared as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have entered into a fierce war of words, accusing each other of shielding drug peddlers and failing to curb the state's drug menace. The latest salvo was fired by BJP state general secretary Anil Sarin and district president Rajnish Dhiman, who held a press conference in Ludhiana on Monday. Hitting back at earlier accusations from AAP MP Malwinder Singh Kang, Sarin accused the AAP government of being directly responsible for the ongoing drug crisis in Punjab. 'The AAP government is hand-in-glove with drug suppliers. Their much-publicised 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' campaign has failed to arrest even a single major drug supplier,' Sarin alleged. He claimed that the real reason the drug trade continues unchecked is because some AAP leaders are allegedly offering protection to those involved in it. Referring to a recent incident in Ajnala on May 28, Sarin said two men were arrested with 50 gms of heroin—an amount that qualifies as a commercial quantity. He accused AAP cabinet minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal of intervening in the case by visiting the police station and instructing the police to send the youths to a drug rehabilitation centre instead of proceeding with legal action. 'Who gave Dhaliwal the authority to interfere with police work when an FIR was already registered?' asked Sarin, demanding the minister's resignation. In response, Dhaliwal strongly refuted the BJP leader's allegations, calling them 'false, fabricated, and politically motivated.' He said that he had every right to ensure that drug addicts—especially the youth—get a chance at recovery instead of being criminalised without proper investigation. Dhaliwal clarified that out of the six-seven people arrested from Lakhowal village, two were reportedly drug users and not dealers. Villagers had approached him, claiming the duo had been wrongly arrested. One of them had just returned from a rehabilitation centre. He said he contacted the local SHO, requested a fair probe, and advised that if the boys were users, they should be sent for treatment. The SHO later sent the two to a rehabilitation centre, while those actually involved in drug peddling were booked under relevant charges. The minister also hit back at the BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), saying they had no moral ground to speak on the issue of drugs, given the massive drug problem that spiralled during their regime. Dhaliwal revealed that his own family had suffered from the crisis—his 32-year-old nephew died of a drug overdose in 2013. 'The pain of drugs is not theoretical for me. It is deeply personal. That's why I returned to India to fight this menace,' he said emotionally.

Delhi HC to hear court staffer's plea seeking protection from arrest on June 11
The Delhi high court on Monday refused to immediately entertain a 38-year-old court staffer's plea seeking protection from arrest for allegedly taking bribes in return for facilitating bail. The case was registered by the Delhi government's Anti Corruption Branch (ACB). The accused was identified as Mukesh Kumar. A bench of justice Tejas Karia's refusal came after ACB's counsel sought additional time to place on record 'substantial piece of evidence' and Kumar's lawyer urged the court to direct ACB to not take coercive action until evidence was placed on record. ACB's standing counsel Sanjeev Bhandari also submitted that there was development in the probe and the latest status report filed by it also implicated Kumar's wife, who was also a court staffer. Considering the contention, justice Karia fixed June 11 as the next date to hear Kumar's anticipatory bail application and directed ACB to file an additional status report till Tuesday. The court said that the material would have an impact on the pre-arrest bail. 'This application (anticipatory bail application) has been pending since May 23. There is no interim protection. For anticipatory bail, we will also have to look into the material (filed by ACB). We will hear you (Kumar) day after tomorrow, no further adjournment,' justice Karia remarked. 'List on June 11. In the meanwhile, Mr Sanjay Bhandari, additional standing counsel for ACB shall place on record an additional status report indicating the additional material by tomorrow,' the court said in its order. ACB in January this year had written to the law secretary of the Delhi government seeking permission to prosecute a special judge of the Rouse Avenue court and Kumar after complaints were received that the judge would demand bribes to grant bails. Kumar, who worked in the same court, was accused of taking bribes on behalf of the judge. This request was forwarded to the Delhi high court. However, the high court in February refused to grant sanction to prosecute the judge, citing insufficient evidence. ACB was given permission to continue with the probe and approach the court if they later find evidence indicating the judge's involvement. On May 16, ACB registered an FIR against Kumar under sections 7 (public servant being bribed) and 13 (criminal misconduct by a public servant) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and sections 61 (criminal conspiracy) and 308 (extortion) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Four days later, Delhi high court on May 20, had transferred the special judge of the Rouse Avenue court to North West district 'with immediate effect'. The judge was handling ACB cases pertaining to Goods and Services Tax evasion. The court was hearing two petitions filed by Kumar. One challenged a city court's May 22 order denying him anticipatory bail; the other sought quashing of the FIR and transfer of the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Kumar alleged in his plea that the FIR was a 'counterblast' to judicial orders by the judge threatening contempt proceedings against ACB officials. He claimed that ACB, a principal litigant in several pending matters before the judge, had acted vindictively and that its officers had threatened him with dire consequences, prompting his earlier request for transfer. On May 27, the high court declined to grant immediate protection from arrest, citing the seriousness of the allegations. On June 6, ACB had told the high court that it had reconstituted a special team on June 3 to probe the case, a day after the high court asked ACB to consider replacing an officer against whom Kumar had earlier raised concerns.
