Coffee lovers rejoice: your beverage of choice is now recognised as a health-promoting staple. Theories that coffee raised the risk of coronary heart disease have been debunked: a 2022 study by the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that people who sipped two to three cups a day had a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and early death than those who didn't.
Such studies need to be read in context. They can't always prove 'cause and effect' as there may be something else about the coffee drinkers' lifestyle that keeps them healthy – perhaps they have better diets overall than non-coffee drinkers. It's encouraging for those who enjoy a flat white though.
Now new research shows that it's not just whether you drink coffee that matters to your health, the way you brew it can have a significant effect on your cholesterol levels and heart health too. The study, released in March from Uppsala University in Sweden and published in the journal Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases found that some methods of coffee preparation can have the unwelcome outcome of raising your low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (aka LDL or 'bad' cholesterol). The researchers suggested a hierarchy of cholesterol-friendly ways of coffee preparation. At the 'bad' end lies Turkish-style boiled and some office-machine coffees, with filtered coffee coming out as the best option, and other methods somewhere in between.
Why does coffee spike your cholesterol?
Coffee does not in itself contain cholesterol. But the beans contain natural oils which include two chemical compounds called cafestol and kahweol, and it's the mechanism of these on the body that can raise cholesterol levels.

David Iggman is a GP, and an associate professor in clinical nutrition at Uppsala University. 'Cafestol and kahweol are lipid molecules called diterpines,' he says. 'They are unique to coffee beans and have similar properties to cholesterol.'
Diterpenes interfere with the body's natural processes of cholesterol breakdown and transport, potentially leading to an increase in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, while also decreasing the 'healthy' HDL cholesterol. Scientists still don't understand exactly why this happens, but have known since the late 1990s that 'boiled' coffee, made on the stove, is particularly high in diterpenes.
'Many types of office hot drinks machines brew their coffee in a similar way to the boiled variety,' explains Iggman. 'In Swedish workplaces, there are almost mandatory breaks around these machines, and so we decided to test them.'

The shake is a staple for many fitness buffs and contains filtered low-fat milk, cream, erythritol, cocoa powder, natural flavours, lactase enzyme, carrageenan, and stevia. Nutritionally, it has 253 calories, 30 grams of protein, 6.4 grams of fat, 18.3 grams of carbs, and 16.6 grams of sugar per serve. Fans shocked by rating The reaction was immediate, with comments flooding in from confused and frustrated fans. 'Nooo I love this drink,' wrote one. 'Oh no, it's my favourite,' said another. 'Please tell me what it's bad for? Personally, at around 250 calories and 30g protein on the go, I don't see an issue with it?' asked a third. Others questioned the app's credibility: 'Something suss is going on here … The vanilla one scans 49/100. Same drink different flavour …' and 'The app is flawed. It says my pure butter is poor and the chemical spread is good,' another user claimed. A spokesperson for Rokeby told 'Rokeby Protein Smoothies contain 30 grams of whole natural protein made with local milk and real high-quality ingredients, delivering great nutrition our consumers love. We encourage consumers to seek out trusted, professional sources for nutritional information and advice'. The viral food scanner Launched in France in 2017, Yuka allows users to scan the barcodes of food and cosmetic products in stores or at home, instantly assigning them a score to indicate how 'healthy' it considers the item. Since its international expansion in 2022, Yuka has exploded in use, with more than 56 million users worldwide. After scanning a product, Yuka assigns a health value out of 100, with corresponding colour codes: excellent (dark green), good (light green), poor (orange), or bad (red). The score is generated by an algorithm weighing three factors: nutritional quality, the presence and risk level of additives, and whether the product is organic. Yuka uses the European 'Nutri-Score' system to assess nutritional quality, rewarding high protein and fibre, and penalising high sugar, salt, saturated fat, and calories. The app's in-house experts classify over 600 food additives as high, moderate, limited, or risk-free, based on scientific research. Organic certification gives products a small bonus. The app is known for its strict approach, especially towards additives and calories. Even products with seemingly 'clean' ingredient lists (like the Rokeby shake) can be penalised if they contain additives like carrageenan (a seaweed-derived additive) or natural sweeteners such as stevia. Nutrition experts weigh in Yuka's scoring system has drawn criticism from nutrition experts. Some say the Nutri-Score system is outdated, especially in how it penalises calories and fails to distinguish between natural and added sugars, according to The New York Times. Experts also point out that giving so much weight to additives may be excessive, since much of the research is based on animal studies or observational data that does not always translate to real-world risks for humans. There is also debate over including organic status, as there is no proven nutritional benefit to organic foods over conventional ones. Despite these concerns, experts do agree that Yuka's focus on limiting highly processed foods aligns with broader public health advice. However, they caution that labelling foods as simply 'good' or 'bad' could contribute to disordered eating, and that most whole foods – fruits, vegetables, nuts – don't even have barcodes to scan. Content creator responds to backlash Mr Humbert, whose video of him using the app went viral, told he highly values the tool and thinks it's helpful for people who struggle to understand nutrition labels. 'Most of the time, the criticism of my videos comes from people who aren't fully educated on nutrition and are simply upset to learn that the products they regularly consume aren't as healthy as they thought,' he said. 'It can be confronting — no one likes to be told their go-to snacks might be doing more harm than good. 'People are genuinely shocked once they see the truth behind some of these everyday products, and they appreciate having a tool that helps them make better choices.'

Qld government grants to help Red Metal drill big copper-gold targets

Red Metal is poised to unlock the vast mineral potential of its Queensland copper-gold projects, thanks to two collaborative drilling grants worth a total $400,000 from the Queensland Government. The funds are set to spearhead the company's proof-of-concept drilling program at two highly prospective iron oxide-copper-gold projects at its Gulf and Three Ways prospects. The company says its high-impact drill testing on geophysical targets in the Mount Isa terrain will be the first deep testing of the prospects, which are in a region renowned for hosting world-class base metal deposits. Red Metal has zeroed in on its GT9 target at Gulf, a compelling gravity anomaly that mirrors the scale and intensity of BHP's giant Oak Dam copper-gold deposit in South Australia. Oak Dam has 1.4 billion tonnes of resources, including 220 million tonnes at 2 per cent copper and 0.5 grams per tonne (g/t) gold. Historic drilling at Gulf has already uncovered hematite breccias - key indicators of IOCG systems - lending weight to the company's bold claim that the 'must-drill' target suggests the potential for a game-changing discovery akin to Oak Dam. At Red Metal's Three Ways project 100 kilometres south of Gulf, the company is preparing to drill a 1.7km-long magnetic target, which coincides with a strong conductance anomaly that Red Metal says is indicative of Mount Isa-style sedimentary-hosted copper mineralisation. Located in a newly identified basin near a major fault zone, Three Ways copper sulphidic host rocks and proximity to a regional structure make it a prime property for big-scale base metal deposits. Heritage surveys for both projects are slated for June, paving the way for drilling to kick off in August. The Queensland Government's funding underscores the state's commitment to fostering its critical minerals future, particularly copper, as the region braces for the closure of Glencore's Mount Isa copper mines later this year. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory all offer collaborative exploration grants, which can offer a huge fill up to mining juniors wanting to drill high-risk exploration projects in remote, well-covered areas. Also important for the company, its 44 per cent stake in ASX-listed Maronan Metals could soon be churning cash as well. Maronan yesterday unveiled a significant resource update for its silver-lead-copper-gold project near Cloncurry, Queensland. Infill drilling of the project's shallow starter zone has more than doubled the indicated silver-lead resource to 5.3Mt at 5.2 per cent lead and 116g/t silver. A maiden indicated copper-gold resource was simultaneously released featuring 1.6Mt at 0.77 per cent copper and a healthy 0.67g/t gold. These sit within much bigger global inferred resources of 33.1Mt at 6 per cent lead and 108g/t silver and some 32Mt grading 0.85 per cent copper and 0.63g/t gold respectively. Maronan has a scoping study underway, but its project's proximity to the world-class Cannington mine 90km away and its near-surface mineralisation position it as a near-term development opportunity, complementing Red Metal's expansive portfolio of riches. Not to be overlooked, Red Metal's flagship Sybella rare earths project near Mount Isa continues to loom large as a globally significant asset. Recent testwork confirmed Sybella's exceptional heap leach potential, with high recoveries of magnet rare earths such as neodymium and praseodymium (up to 81%) using minimal acid and ultra-low iron impurities. The project's colossal 4.8Bt resource, grading 302 parts per million (ppm) neodymium-praseodymium and 28ppm dysprosium-terbium across an 8-square-kilometre area, offers a low-capex, long-life opportunity that could position Red Metal as a key player in the global rare earths market. That's if the company can square away its all-important metallurgical refining process. As Red Metal advances its Gulf and Three Ways drilling programs, alongside Maronan's development milestones and Sybella's massive resource potential, the company is entering a pivotal chapter in Queensland. With plenty of world-class potential projects, having multiple chances to land the big one would seem the strategy for the all-upside Red Metal.
