RBI sees tepid demand at overnight VRR Auction ahead of ₹2 trn reversal
Market participants said that the bids were lower because of the reversal of VRRR funds worth Rs. 2 trillion on Friday.
'It was an overnight auction, and there is a reversal of Rs 2 trillion tomorrow (Friday), that's why there was no demand at the VRR auction,' said V R C. Reddy, head of treasury at Karur Vysya Bank. 'The RBI may have anticipated that overnight rates would remain elevated today, which likely prompted the auction. Their objective is to keep the overnight rate within the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF)–repo corridor, and not near the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF),' he added.
The marginal standing facility rate, set 25 bps above the policy repo rate, is the ceiling of the liquidity adjustment facility corridor. The standing deposit facility, which is 25 bps below the repo rate, is the floor. The policy repo rate is currently at 5.5 per cent.
The RBI's two-day VRR auction conducted on Wednesday led to a decline in overnight money market rates, which had been trading above the MSF rate of 5.75 per cent.
Market participants said that fine-tuning via VRR auctions became necessary due to the large withdrawal during a week of liquidity stress. Next week, the RBI may not need a VRR because government spending typically picks up in the last week of the month, they said.
'The banks needed funds after parking Rs 2 trillion at the seven-day VRRR auction last Friday; hence the VRR auction was conducted,' said the treasury head at a private bank. 'Next week, when government spending kicks in, we won't need VRRs,' he added.
After government spending resumes in early August, VRRRs are expected to continue given the significant surplus liquidity in the banking system, said market participants.
The net liquidity in the banking system was in a surplus of Rs 2.17 trillion on Wednesday, the latest data from the RBI showed.

Cops probe Rs11.5 crore loan fraud by petrol pump partners and guarantor
Pune: The city police's economic offences wing (EOW) is investigating an alleged Rs11.47 crore loan fraud committed on a leading private bank branch on Fergusson College Road by two partners in a petrol pump at Pirangut and a guarantor-cum-mortgagee. The three, including a woman, are accused of defaulting on a Rs5.38 crore loan extended in 2017 by the bank against the mortgage of a flat in Sadashiv Peth and the Pirangut petrol pump property, besides Rs6.09 crore worth of overdraft protection and interest on the loan. They are also accused of forging the bank's no-objection certificate (NOC) and mortgaging the same two properties to a cooperative bank to secure a Rs7 crore loan from that bank. Based on a complaint by the private bank's Navi Mumbai-based legal enforcement unit's official, the Shivajinagar police on Tuesday registered a case of criminal conspiracy, cheating, criminal breach of trust, forgery, and use of forged documents as genuine, among other charges, against the petrol pump (as a corporate entity), the two partners, and the guarantor-cum-mortgagee. The EOW later took over the investigation in the case. Senior inspector Deepali Bhujbal told TOI: "The suspects are related to each other. The prime suspect, who owns the land parcel at Pirangut as well as the petrol pump located there, approached the bank in 2017 for a business loan. The bank gave him Rs5.38 crore against the mortgage of his two properties i.e. the land and the flat. However, he did not pay the EMIs but kept on sending promissory notes to the bank to avert the loan account from getting listed as a non-performing asset (NPA). " You Can Also Check: Pune AQI | Weather in Pune | Bank Holidays in Pune | Public Holidays in Pune "The bank listed the account as an NPA in 2021 and followed the RBI norms to seize the mortgaged properties. However, when the bank officials reached the fuel station in Pirangut to attach the property, they realised that it was already sold to a third party," Bhujbal said. "The bank again conducted a fresh title search report. The report revealed that the suspect and other family members secured another loan of Rs7 crore from a cooperative bank, having an office on Shivaji Road, after submitting a fake NOC of the FC Road bank. Further inquiry by the EOW revealed that the suspects had not even paid the EMIs of the cooperative bank," Bhujbal said. "We have requested the cooperative bank officials to file a fresh complaint against the suspects," she said, adding a search is under way for the prime suspect. Amid property tax row, GMC extends 20% cut till September
Ghaziabad: In a bid to quell the ongoing dispute over property tax rates, Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) has decided to extend the rebate period by two months. So, residents who make their payments till Sept 30 will get a 20% rebate on their tax, a significant extension from the original deadline of July 31. Sanjeev Sinha, the chief tax assessment officer at GMC, said, "With a view to include maximum consumers under the tax bracket, the corporation is offering a time-bound rebate on property tax. Since the start of the fiscal year — from April 1 — a 20% rebate was offered till July 31. However, we have extended this by two more months. Consumers can now avail themselves of a 20% rebate on property tax till Sept 30." Sinha elaborated on the future rebate structure too. "After Sept, the rebate will be slashed by 10%, which the consumers can avail themselves of for another two months — Oct and Nov. For Dec and Jan next year, the rebate will be 5%. After that, no discount will be offered. A consumer paying property tax after March 2026 will be levied with a fine. It is advisable that residents make good use of the offer because it is beneficial from the consumer's as well as GMC's point of view. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Malaysia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search Ads Undo It will boost the corporation's coffers." The state govt has set a target of Rs 600 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26. GMC hopes to collect at least 80% of this target. Despite the extension, confusion prevailed among residents regarding the tax rates. While officials asserted that property tax was being charged at rates before April 1, some residents claimed having received notices based on a new, higher tax slab. IN Jha, a resident of Sidharth Vihar, voiced his concerns. "We thought the GMC board repealed the hiked property tax proposal on June 30. But we are still receiving notices based on the new tax slab, which is at least four times higher than previous tax rates. There is confusion. So far, we have not got a satisfactory reply." Previously, property tax rates ranged from Rs 0.32/sqft for properties on roads less than 12 metres wide to Rs 2.41/sqft for wider roads. Revised rates now range from Rs 0.75/sqft to Rs 4/sqft. GMC calculates tax based on annual rental value (ARV) of a property. GMC's decision to hike property tax has led to protest among councillors. The GMC board recently approved a decision to repeal the hike order, and sent it to the state govt for a final call. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
