PM Modi inaugurates Unit I of Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited's Ghatampur Thermal Power Project
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (May 30, 2025) dedicated Unit I of the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project in Kanpur Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh to the nation.
The project, inaugurated by the Prime Minister on Friday, was developed by Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL), a joint venture of NLC India Limited (51%) and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL) (49%).
According to a NLCIL press release, the project comprises three supercritical thermal power units of 660 MW each, adding up to a substantial 1,980 MW of installed capacity.
This initiative aims to meet the growing electricity demand in Uttar Pradesh and other States, enhancing energy security, while aligning with the nation's commitment to sustainable and reliable power generation.
The project cost is ₹21,780.94 crore, and the remaining two units of the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project are expected to be commissioned in 2025-26.
A total of 998.81 hectares of land was acquired for its development.
Project features
According to NLCIL, the project has several advanced environmental technologies, including Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) technologies for reducing NOx and (SOx) emissions, respectively.
The project also includes a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system in place to ensure no water is discharged from the plant. A total of 288 km of canal lining works are being undertaken to conserve 195 MLD of water by preventing seepage losses.
The project is equipped with sophisticated monitoring devices, including Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (AAQMS) and Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS).

India, Denmark join hands to set up Centre of Excellence in Green Shipping
Copenhagen [Denmark], June 6 (ANI): Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal met Denmark's Minister of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs Morten Bodskov in a bilateral meeting here on Friday. The meeting resulted in the establishment of the Centre of Excellence in Green Shipping, to be established in India. Both leaders reaffirmed the Green Strategic Partnership and exchanged views on bilateral maritime collaboration. An MoU was signed between the two countries. It is intended to improve the quality and efficiency of maritime activities while promoting the green transition of the maritime sector in India. The ministers underscored this as a new milestone in India-Denmark maritime collaboration with the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in Green Shipping, as outlined in the bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on maritime affairs signed in 2024. Union Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal said, 'Under the visionary leadership of Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, India is now the 4th largest economy and undertaking several transformative initiatives under our Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. These include efforts in port infrastructure, green shipping, shipbuilding, and digitalisation.' 'We seek Denmark's participation and investments in these transformative initiatives, where your expertise and leadership in sustainable maritime practices can make a significant impact. We are keen to develop both domestic and international green shipping corridors with Denmark. Identifying suitable routes, developing supportive policy, and building infrastructure will be key,' Sonowal added. The two ministers reaffirmed the Green Strategic Partnership, as mutually agreed upon by Prime Minister Narendra Modi Denmark counterpart, Mette Frederiksen. The Ministers highlighted the importance of the bilateral Memorandum of Understanding on maritime affairs signed in 2024, which encompasses establishing the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Green Shipping. The ministers highlighted alignment with targets set out in the Government of India's Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, including India's ambitions to become a green shipping hub for the international maritime sector. A Letter of Intent (LOI) was signed between the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC), Lothal, and the Maritime Museum of Denmark, Elsinore, to increase collaboration in the preservation and valorisation of cultural heritage related to maritime heritage. The LOI established a framework for cooperation to study, exchange, or showcase common maritime heritage, share technical know-how, and conduct joint research on common maritime heritage. Adding further, Sarbananda Sonowal said, 'We appreciate Denmark's engagement through the Joint Working Group on Shipping and the India-Nordic Summit. The Joint Action Plan on Green Strategic Partnership provides a strong framework to drive all this forward. Our maritime cooperation is built on mutual trust, shared values, and a common vision for a sustainable and future-ready maritime sector. Our joint efforts will also contribute meaningfully to global maritime sustainability and innovation.' Both sides discussed possible ways and means to deepen bilateral maritime relations spanning green shipping, decarbonisation, maritime training and education, green fuel and technology collaboration, and ship recycling. India has proposed that the National Centre of Excellence for Green Port and Shipping (NCoEGPS) and the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) begin joint work on certifications and launch collaborative research focused on energy efficiency technologies. It also proposed that the Indian Ports Association (IPA) coordinate with the Port of Aarhus to develop smart port solutions. These innovative models can later be adapted and scaled across ports in India to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability. 'Digital transformation is a shared goal between us. Denmark's use of technologies like blockchain for ship registries and automation in port operations is closely aligned with our Maritime India Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal Vision 2047,' added Sarbananda Sonowal during the meeting. The CoE is intended to improve the quality and efficiency of maritime activities while promoting the green transition of the maritime sector in India. Both parties identified the Maersk McKinney Moller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping (MMMCZCS) and the National Centre of Excellence for Green Port and Shipping (NCoEGPS) as key institutions to formulate a specific project plan for the development of a Green Corridor. Indo-Danish CoE will contribute to the development of green corridors through a pre-feasibility study. The study will serve as a preliminary assessment of the main components of possible green corridors in India and outline the most promising ones. (ANI)

Horses and mules to the rescue: How Chenab Bridge was built in Kashmir
NEW DELHI: Long before towering cranes swung into action or steel arches touched the skies, it was the humble clip-clop of hooves that echoed through the Himalayas. To bring the dream of connecting Kashmir to Kanyakumari alive, the team building the Chenab Bridge, now the world's highest railway bridge, first had to navigate a far less glamorous challenge: getting there. In the early days, the steep, unforgiving terrain of the Himalayas offered no roads, no tracks—only winding, narrow paths. The solution? Horses and mules. 'Initially, mules and horses were used by the project team to reach the location,' said a spokesperson from Afcons Infrastructure Limited, the engineering firm that executed the mega project. 'Gradually, temporary access roads were built, finally leading to more permanent routes,' he told PTI. It took grit and persistence to tame the landscape. On the north bank of the Chenab, an 11-km road was carved out; on the south, 12 km more followed - routes that would eventually bring in machinery, steel, and hope. On Friday, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi walked across the bridge waving the tricolour, what unfolded was not just the inauguration of a piece of infrastructure, but the realisation of a nation's engineering audacity. Along with the Chenab Bridge, the PM also flagged off the Anji Rail Bridge, the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), and Vande Bharat trains—bringing Kashmir a rail heartbeat closer to the rest of India. Taming the Himalayas wasn't easy. Using the world's tallest crossbar cable cranes and heavy-duty machines, engineers performed consolidation grouting on ancient, brittle slopes, fortifying them to bear the massive arch foundations. The real magic unfolded on April 5, 2021. As cantilevered arches extended from either bank of the Chenab, they met in mid-air like clasped hands—a moment of triumph after years of calculations, courage and concrete. And the feats didn't stop there. For the first time in Indian Railways' history, incremental launching was executed on a transition curve and a longitudinal gradient at the same location,. It wasn't just engineering excellence but also scientific precision that held the bridge together. A lab accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) was set up on-site, another Indian Railways first, to ensure uncompromising quality at every stage. Standing 359 metres above the Chenab River, 35 metres taller than Paris' Eiffel Tower, the bridge is now the world's tallest railway structure. A marvel in steel and spirit.

PM Modi ends India's wait for rail link between Delhi and Kashmir
India's wait for rail connectivity between New Delhi and the Kashmir Valley ended on Friday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a host of infrastructure projects, including two Vande Bharat trains and two of India's most advanced rail bridges – Chenab and Anji. 'Whether it is Chenab Bridge or Anji Bridge, these will become a means of prosperity for both Jammu and Kashmir. This will not only increase tourism, but will also benefit other sectors of the economy. Rail connectivity between Jammu and Kashmir will create new opportunities for businessmen of both regions. This will give impetus to the industry here, now apples from Kashmir will be able to reach the big markets of the country at a low cost, and will be able to reach on time," Modi said while inaugurating multiple infrastructure projects in Katra, including the completed Kashmir rail link. "Be it dry fruits or pashmina shawls, the handicrafts here will now be easily able to reach any part of the country. This will also make it very easy for the people of Jammu and Kashmir to travel to other parts of the country,' he said. The Udhampur Srinagar Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project stretches 272 km through the rugged Himalayas. The entire project, which had been getting completed in parts over the past decades, has been completed at a cost of ₹43,780 crore, 42 years after the foundation stone was laid by then PM Indira Gandhi. It has 36 tunnels that span 119 km, and 943 bridges that knit together valleys, ridges, and mountain passes. Designed to overcome the region's challenging geography, it connects remote areas to the national rail network. 'When this project was conceptualised, I was a student in eighth standard. Today, I'm 55 years old,' said Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at the inauguration event. The Chenab Bridge, standing at a height of 359 metres above the river, is the world's highest railway arch bridge. It is a 1,315-metre-long steel arch bridge engineered to withstand seismic and wind conditions. A key impact of the bridge will be in enhancing connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar. 'Through Vande Bharat train moving on the bridge, it will take just about three hours to travel between Katra and Srinagar, reducing existing travel time by two-three hours,' said the railways. Modi said the bridge in and of itself will become a prominent tourist destination. Similarly, the Anji Bridge is India's first cable-stayed rail bridge. Speaking for the first time in J&K since the Pahalgam terror strike, Modi attacked Pakistan for conspiring to stir instability in the region. 'Pakistan attacked both humanity and Kashmiriyat in Pahalgam. Its intention was to create riots in India. Its intention was to stop the earnings of the hardworking people of Kashmir. That is why Pakistan attacked the tourists. Tourism was continuously increasing in the last four-five years, every year a record number of tourists were coming here. Pakistan targeted tourism that helps the poor of Jammu and Kashmir run their homes,' he said. Abdullah said the introduction of train services in the Valley was a relief for the people of the Union Territory (UT) who got 'looted' by airlines whenever highways in the UT had to be closed due to rains. He claimed that airlines looted J&K by hiking airfares from ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 in a matter of an hour.
