Durand Cup: Clayton powers Diamond Harbour FC to 8-1 Win over BSF FC

Kolkata, Aug 1 (UNI ) Diamond Harbour FC continued their winning run in the 134th IndianOil Durand Cup with a commanding 8-1 victory over BSF Football Club in a Group B clash, here at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan (KBK).
Brazilian striker Clayton Silva starred with four goals (2', 35', 71', 90+3') while Slovenian forward Luka Majcen netted a brace (7', 39'). Paul (53') and Jobby Justin (67') added to the tally. BSF FC's lone goal came from Kishori in the 90th minute.
Diamond Harbour Football Club Head Coach Jose Antonio made four changes to his starting line-up bringing in Spanish defender Mikel Kortazar Idiakez, Lalliansanga Renthelei, goal keeper Susanta Malik and Slovenian Forward Luka Majcen in place of Wahengbam Angousana Luwang, Mirshad Koottappunna, Naro Hari Shrestha and Lalliansanga Renthlei, while BSF FC Head Coach Gurjit Singh Atwal named an experienced starting eleven in a 4-4-2 formation with Kishori and Harmandeep Singh in the attacking line.
The I-League 2 champions needed just two minutes to make their intentions clear, as Clayton Silva opened the scoring with a composed right footed finish off a Jobby Justin cross. Luka Majcen doubled the lead five minutes later, smashing in after a scramble by Clayton in the box.
Despite BSF's attempts to get into the game, they were largely outplayed in midfield and struggled to contain Diamond Harbour's attacking trio of Silva, Majcen, and Paul. In the 35th minute, Silva struck again with a volley from Girik's cross, after Paul and Jobby combined to create the opportunity and just four minutes later, Majcen made it 4-0 after receiving a lofted pass from the Brazilian.
BSF's best first-half moment came in the 43rd minute when Kishori's shot was blocked by keeper Susnata Malik. But it was Diamond Harbour who went into the break with a dominant 4-0 lead.
Jose Antonio's men picked up where they left off in the second half. Paul added the fifth in the 53rd minute, beating the BSF defense with a low drive. BSF's backline continued to struggle under pressure, and Jobby Justin scored the sixth with a powerful header from Samuel's corner in the 67th minute.
Silva completed his hat-trick in the 71st minute, capitalising on a failed clearance from another corner. Though BSF pulled one back in the 90th minute through Kishori, after a neat assist by Harmandeep, it was a mere consolation.
The Brazilian capped off a stellar night with his fourth goal in injury time, powering in a shot from outside the box to make it 8-1.
With this emphatic win, Diamond Harbour FC moved to the top of Group B with six points and +7 goal difference from two matches, ahead of the crucial encounter against Mohun Bagan on August 9.

NEROCA FC and Indian Navy shares spoils in goalless draw

Agency: PTI Imphal, Aug 7 (PTI) NEROCA FC and Indian Navy FT played out a hard-fought goalless draw in their Group F match of the 134th Durand Cup football tournament to earn a point each here on Thursday. Despite several half-chances and moments of promise, both sides failed to find the finishing touch in a match that was high on midfield battles and defensive organisation. NEROCA head coach Gyan Moyon made three changes to his starting XI from the Imphal Derby, switching to a 4-2-3-1 formation. Jetli Sorokhaibam came in as goalkeeper, Gotimayum Muktasana was handed a midfield role, and Brazilian Lucas Da Silva slotted into the defence. Deny Singh of Indian Navy made the first attempt in the 6th minute with a right-footed strike from the wing, but keeper Jetli Sorokhaibam was equal to the task, diving low to his left to make a comfortable save. The Orange Brigade responded in the 11th minute when a through ball from midfield released Lourembam on the left. He sprinted down the flank and fired a shot at goal, but Bhaskar Roy handled it without fuss. The next few minutes saw NEROCA dominate possession, testing the Sailors' defensive line with bursts from Lourembam and Rohit Meetei, but the Navy defenders held firm. The first half saw strong defensive displays from both sides. The best chance of the second half for the Sailors came in the 50th minute when Roshan Panna laid the ball off for Deny Singh, whose curling effort spun wide. Three minutes later, Deny had another crack from outside the box, but it went wide. Neroca skipper Kinesh Singh nearly broke the deadlock in the 60th minute, but his left-footed placement off a lofted cross missed the target. Three minutes later, the Sailors were awarded a freekick on the edge of the box, but Adersh's effort struck the wall. In the 88th minute, Indian Navy came close to a winner when substitute Sadananda Singh delivered a perfect ball to an unmarked Sreyas near the goal, only for the forward to hit the post. A minute later, Gomado had a similar opportunity at the other end but fired wide. PTI AH AH AT AT view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. With all the expensive transfers taking place in world football nowadays, it has created a domino effect that has inflated all the prices, with mid-table teams now selling off their talents for amounts close to €70 million (630 crore). Such is the level of inflation that Cristiano Ronaldo's move from Manchester United to Real Madrid for over €80 million—which was the world-record sum back in the 2009/10 season, is now among the lower ranks, and even less than what Manchester United paid Ajax for Brazilian winger Antony in the 2022/23 season (approximately €85 million). The current deal that tops the charts is Neymar Jr's world-record transfer from FC Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), which cost the Parisian club a whopping €222 million (₹1,776 crore) back in the 2017/18 season. Surpassing the €150 million (₹1,440 crore) mark, Kylian Mbappé took the second spot in the table when the French youngster switched clubs from AS Monaco to PSG. 2017/18 season: Changing football transfers for the world With three of the top five most expensive signings in world football currently coming in the 2017/18 season, with Neymar's move shocking world football, the world started viewing transfers in another light and saw inflated price tags become a common sighting from then on. Mikel Arteta Unhappy With Arsenal's Defending After 2-3 Defeat To Villareal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta criticised his team's naive defending after a 3-2 friendly defeat to Villarreal. Arsenal were naive in their defending and paid a painful price, manager Mikel Arteta said after his side's 3-2 friendly defeat against Villarreal, resulting in back-to-back pre-season losses. Arsenal began their preparations for the new season with victories over AC Milan and Newcastle United. However, they then lost to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and found themselves trailing 2-0 within 33 minutes against Spanish side Villarreal at the Emirates on Wednesday. 'Today I think the result is painful. I think they were super efficient but we've been naive, especially the way we have defended in open spaces and that's something that, especially the way we play, we have to absolutely nail," Arteta told reporters. 'Today we haven't been good at all in that department and that has cost us the game for sure." Arteta, however, was pleased with what he saw from striker Viktor Gyokeres, who completed his 63.5 million euros ($74.14 million) switch from Sporting last month, after handing the 27-year-old Swede his first start in an Arsenal shirt. 'I think it was very important for him to start a match and start to have the feeling and the connection with the team," Arteta said. "He's been with us only a week or so, but I really saw a lot of things and a lot of purpose, especially the way he was attacking certain spaces." Arteta also heaped praise on highly rated 15-year-old attacking midfielder Max Dowman, who won a penalty for Arsenal. "He continues to impress, without a doubt. The impact he had in the game again today, the efficiency that he shows in every attack and action, it's incredible," the Spaniard added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
