Paul Radley Champions: Manchester City Bouncing back from a season of decline and reconstructing a title-winning side could be one of Pep Guardiola's finest achievements. Their transfer spending has been savvy, and Rodri is working his way back. Top four: Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal Relegated: Sunderland, Burnley, Wolves Surprise package: Everton After years of gently rocking between meh and battling relegation, Everton might actually be interesting this season. How they settle into their new stadium will be intriguing to see, and if they land Grealish, too, they might have spark on the field as well. Disappointment: Tottenham Hotspur Unless they suddenly sign Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi, or anyone of any sort of standing, their prospects of building on their Europa League success are diminished by their board's lack of ambition. Thomas Frank has a tough task ahead. Player of the season: Rodri Unlikely to be fully fit until the September international window, according to Guardiola. Once he is, it will be nice to be reminded of the elegance with which he plays the game when on song. Top goalscorer: Erling Haaland The league is suddenly awash with fine strikers – many of Scandinavian origin, like Alexander Isak and Gyokeres – but few are provided with the same ammunition as Haaland gets at City. Player to watch: Joao Pedro Played a key role in winning a trophy within a month of joining Chelsea, as he scored the winning goal in their Club World Cup final win over Paris Saint-Germain. Top goalscorer: Mohamed Salah Again. Which will be an achievement at 33-34 years old. Player to watch: Florian Wirtz Superb for Leverkusen, will be interesting to see if he can settle in a tougher league. Ian Hawkey Champions: Arsenal The new recruits in key positions can finally push the serial runners-up to one place better. Top four: Arsenal, Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea. Relegated: Burnley, Sunderland, Brentford. Surprise package: Bournemouth A club now built to withstand a few high-profile, high-price summer departures, they keep climbing. A European place is well within grasp. Disappointment: Manchester United Not, perhaps, quite as disappointing as last season, but the habit of underachieving seems set in, however many new strikers they sign. Player of the season: Declan Rice Fit and fresh, he can become the most galvanising midfielder in the Premier League. And he's still getting better. Top goalscorer: Erling Haaland A stronger City than last season should help reunite the Norwegian phenomenon with the Golden Boot. Player to watch: Tijjani Reijnders There will be moments City miss the departed Kevin de Bruyne, but fewer now the dynamic Reijnders is added to their midfield. He should also benefit from having Rodri, once fully fit, alongside him. Nick Donaldson Champions: Chelsea Seem to have a sense of momentum and look formidable in attack, goalkeeper possibly the weak link. Top four: Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal. Surprise package: Everton New ground, new start. Sense of optimism and momentum from last year's strong finish could lead to a season fighting in the top half of the league instead of the bottom. Disappointment: Manchester United Strengthened up front but midfield and defence still lacking. Could go either way but brittle confidence and a few bad results could send them into another season of struggle. Player of the season: Cole Palmer Exceptional talent with a stronger team around him will blossom both for Chelsea and England. Top goalscorer: Erling Haaland If the machine stays fit, there is still no one better at sniffing the goals. Player to watch: Florian Wirtz Has got the lot. Tireless, clever and inventive. Always seems to have time on the ball. Roy Cooper Champions: Arsenal Improved their points tally in the last few seasons, defensively they are very good. This could be their year. Top four: Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City Relegated: Wolves, Burnley, Sunderland Surprise package: Everton A fresh start with a new stadium and a couple of new signings. If they get Grealish then even better. Could finish in a European position. Disappointment: Newcastle United In need of a striker and if they lose Isak then they are in trouble. Could be a struggle to make the top six this season. Player of the season: Cole Palmer Just gets better every year, steps up every time and loves the big games. Many more assists and goals are on the way this season. Top goalscorer: Erling Haaland Is there a better goal machine? Joao Pedro could come a close second. Player to watch: Estevao Willian Skill, pace and ability. If he can hold his own physically against Premier League defenders then he will shine.

Premier League: Big-spending Liverpool eye title again but defensive concerns remain
Liverpool have splashed out to defend their Premier League title as champions but face stiff competition from an Arsenal side desperate to shake off their tag as nearly men and a rejuvenated Manchester City. After storming to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title in Arne Slot's first season in charge, Liverpool have looked to build from a position of strength during a summer marked by tragedy. Portuguese forward Diogo Jota was killed in a car accident alongside his brother last month, plunging the club into mourning. Tributes to Jota will continue throughout the season with "Forever 20" -- his shirt number, which the club have now retired -- printed on Liverpool's jerseys. The Reds have already spent £260 million ($350 million) on Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong. However, after the departures of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, they are not yet done in strengthening their forward line and are expected to launch a fresh bid for Alexander Isak, with Newcastle demanding a British transfer record fee for the Swedish striker. Liverpool's rivals will hope Wirtz and Ekitike take time to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League after shining in Germany's Bundesliga, while there are defensive doubts for Slot's men to answer. The Dutch coach said his side need to defend better after leaky performances in pre-season were followed by defeat in the Community Shield to Crystal Palace on Sunday after twice blowing the lead. Liverpool boss Arne Slot said his side are conceding too often if they are to defend the Premier League title. The Reds twice failed to hold onto the lead as Palace levelled through Jean-Philippe Mateta's penalty and Ismaila Sarr's strike 13 minutes from time as the match ended 2-2 before the shootout. Last season Liverpool beat Palace 1-0 at Selhurst Park and drew 1-1 on the final day of the season at Anfield as they romped to the title with four games to spare. Slot saw flashes of what his star-studded forward line are capable of as the most expensive of his new recruits, Wirtz, teed up Ekitike for the opening goal after just four minutes. However, in keeping with the pattern of Liverpool's pre-season friendlies, they were cut open with ease on the counter-attack. AC Milan beat Slot's men 4-2 in Hong Kong, while Liverpool edged out Athletic Bilbao 3-2 in one of two friendlies against the Basques on their return to Anfield on Monday. "If you look at our attacking play against a team that is so compact, that might be a bit better than last season," said Slot. "We only could score one goal against Palace (last season). Now we scored two and created more against them. "But, on the other hand, we conceded two goals, which we did against Bilbao, and we conceded a couple more against Milan, so that is something we need to do better." Only Arsenal had a better defensive record than Liverpool in the Premier League last season and Slot is keen to rectify his side's issues before they begin their title defence at home to Bournemouth on Friday. "We are able to create more but we are conceding at the moment more as well. If you want to compete to win the league, you cannot concede these chances. "We conceded too much today to win the game." Liverpool's spending in the transfer market may not be over as they continue to be linked with a move for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. However, Slot dismissed the claim that the transfer spending will put his players under more pressure this season. "Because we are Liverpool the pressure is always on," he said. Manchester City 2025/26 season preview: Pep Guardiola's team look to bounce back after major rebuild
The Premier League kicks off this weekend and all eyes will be on Pep Guardiola's Manchester City after a difficult 2024/25 campaign. It has been a summer of change at the Etihad Stadium and here we look ahead to a season in which City will be determined to bounce back. Prospects Saturday evening's friendly against Italian Serie B side Palermo hinted that Manchester City are back on track on the eve of the new season. The club grabbed a 3-0 victory in Sicily against their City Football Group stablemate, with John Stones starting after months out with injury and summer signing Tijjani Reijnders scoring twice as a second-half substitute. Goalkeeper James Trafford, another recent recruit, played the first half and looked comfortable for the most part. The clean sheet will be welcome and the age profile of the starting XI suggests City's rapid rebuild in 2025 is nearly complete, but there are still some defensive gremlins to purge after their title challenge unravelled last winter. City also have some injury worries going into the new season and a cluster of players apparently set to leave what is a large first-team squad by recent standards. Ballon d'Or winner Rodri is out for now and Mateo Kovacic will be sidelined for a couple of months with an Achilles injury, leaving Nico Gonzalez as the only conventional defensive midfielder in the squad. Phil Foden is not expected to be fit for the start of the season, while neither Josko Gvardiol nor Claudio Echeverri travelled last weekend. Jack Grealish has secured a loan deal at Everton, James McAtee looks likely to leave for Nottingham Forest, while Stefan Ortega and Kalvin Phillips may well depart, too. Savinho has been the subject of reported interest from Spurs. Guardiola's side will be a fun watch this season, but City will not be many people's favourites to reclaim their crown, despite winning the Premier League title in six of the last eight years. Only time will tell whether they can get back to their best after the multiple setbacks of last term or if this will be a year of transition. In an intriguing interview with GQ earlier this month, Guardiola said that last season's downturn was a 'healthy process for the club, because success can confuse you', adding that 'you can't win every time'. He also made the point that the club finished third last term, which represented a drop off from the heights of previous years, but not as deep a dip as some have suggested. Guardiola sounds philosophical and realistic on the eve of the new campaign. He is also one of the greatest innovators and problem-solvers the sport has ever known. With a squad comprehensively rebuilt in two transfer windows, he may feel his side is on the cusp of a return to the summit. Star signing Rayan Cherki: All the summer intake look capable of excelling, including Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves, Rayan Cherki from Lyon, Reijnders from AC Milan and Trafford from Burnley. Midfielder Sverre Nypan and goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli also arrived from Rosenborg and Chelsea respectively, but neither is expected to feature much. Anyone who saw Cherki's electric cameo in France's 5-4 defeat by Spain at the Nations League finals this summer, will be aware of his capabilities. He made his international debut after a stellar season at Lyon, where he finished as top assist provider in both Ligue 1 and the Europa League. City have to mitigate against the absence of Kevin De Bruyne this season after his departure to Serie A. Cherki, who turns 22 this month, is an incredibly gifted player who could secure the high volume of assists and goals the Belgian provided for a decade. Key player Rodri: The Ballon d'Or winner's latest setback, a groin injury during City's Club World Cup exit to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, is a reminder of how important Rodri has been to the side's trophy-laden recent past and how much he is missed when unavailable. He played 56 times for the club in the treble-winning 2022/23 season and 50 times the following term as well as in major tournaments for Spain. But an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained in last September's dramatic home draw against Arsenal ruled him out until the final moments of the 2024/25 campaign. City looked meek and vulnerable at times in his absence, particularly during the period from November to March. If Rodri can successfully recover from injury and return to anything close to his prior form, City could be unstoppable this season. Hot prospect Oscar Bobb: A fractured leg in last year's preseason meant Bobb barely featured last term, a situation compounded by a secondary injury in April. Bobb will be familiar to many for his stunning piece of footwork in a De Bruyne-assisted winner away at Newcastle in City's last title-winning season. He was expected to feature far more heavily last term before injury tore those plans apart. Bobb scored against Al Ain in the summer's Club World Cup and put in a good performance in Palermo this month, suggesting he may be on the cusp of a strong comeback at City.
