Spotify-like AI helps discover never-before-seen supernova as greedy star attempts to eat a black hole
Scientists may have spotted a never-before-seen kind of supernova, after using a Spotify-like artificial intelligence (AI) to scan the skies for strange activity.
The AI unearthed signs of what could have been a huge star blowing up just as it was attempting to gulp down a nearby black hole.
The stellar explosion, dubbed SN 2023zkd, was spotted in July 2023 with the Zwicky Transient Facility, a full-sky astronomical survey based at the Palomar Observatory in California. But Zwicky didn't find the explosion through happenstance. Rather, it was guided to the right spot using an algorithm optimized to find weird night-sky activity.
Spotting the signs of a supernova early is key to catching how supernovas start, evolve and then fade away — providing insight into how these explosions work.
In this case, the AI found unusual brightenings months before the explosion happened, study co-lead authors Alex Gagliano, a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute For AI and Fundamental Interactions, and Ashley Villar, a supernova researcher and assistant professor at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, told Live Science in an email.
This quick alert enabled a number of large observatories to get in on the action and provide observations across a large spectrum of wavelengths.

While there are a couple of ideas about what these telescopes actually saw, the scientists behind the new study say the explosion was most likely from a huge star orbiting the black hole. As these two objects tugged at each other, the separation between them decreased. Eventually, the star attempted to consume the black hole and exploded in the process, due to gravitational stress.
Alternatively, it could have been that the black hole shredded the star via a process known as "spaghettification," causing the explosion, but the data does not suggest that as strongly, Gagliano said.
By looking at the massive star's chemical composition, the team also found that it had not lost all of its outermost material before it exploded.
"This suggests that binary interaction is a lot messier than astronomers have thought," Gagliano said. "Upcoming events will tell us how the explosions of massive stars are shaped by companion interaction, which is very difficult to model at present."
Gagliano cautioned that nobody has seen enough of these explosions to fully predict how a huge star and a black hole might interact. The data, however, is "very hard to explain without a binary system," meaning that a black hole and star were very likely involved in some way.
AI assistance
The AI used in the discovery is called Lightcurve Anomaly Identification and Similarity Search (LAISS). The astronomy AI is based on the Spotify algorithm, so LAISS recommends astronomical observations in a similar way that Spotify users are guided to songs they may enjoy.
The latest explosion came to the attention of LAISS due to properties from the light of the binary system, and its location 730 million light-years from Earth. Features of SN 2023zkd were "compared against a large reference dataset of known objects to identify statistical outliers," Gagliano said. "Anomalous signals may indicate rare or previously unseen phenomena."
Once LAISS finds something interesting, a bot in Slack, an instant messaging service, flags candidates and posts them into a dedicated channel, enabling team members to check out the findings in real time.
"This streamlined system enables astronomers to rapidly target the most promising and unusual discoveries," Gagliano said.
After the explosion, the light pattern of SN 2023zkd became very strange. At first it brightened just like a typical supernova, then declined. But astronomers really began to pay attention when it brightened once again. Archival data showed more strange behavior: The star, which had been at a consistent brightness for a while, was gradually getting brighter in the four years before it exploded.
Astronomers think the light comes from the excess material the star was shedding. At first, it got brighter as the shockwave from the supernova plowed into lower-density gas in the region. Another brightness peak later came as the shockwave continued into a cloud of dust.

As for the presence of the black hole, astronomers inferred it both from the structure of the gas and dust, as well as the strange stellar brightening in the years before the explosion.
LAISS helped astronomers to see all this extra detail. "If we had waited until a human flagged 2023zkd, we would have missed the early signatures of the surrounding disk and the existence of a black hole companion. AI systems like LAISS help us regularly find rare explosions, without relying on luck, and early enough to uncover their origins," Gagliano said.
The results were published on Wednesday (Aug. 13) in The Astrophysical Journal.

Wilmore, 62, is a Tennessee native first selected as a NASA astronaut in 2000. Wilmore crewed Boeing Starliner with astronaut Suni Williams Wilmore's retirement announcement comes less than five months after he returned from the International Space Station following an unexpectedly lengthy stay. Wilmore, along with NASA astronaut Suni Williams, were the two selected to crew the inaugural human flight of the Boeing Starliner in 2024. Wilmore and Williams launched June 5, 2024, on a mission to test a vehicle intended to one day join the SpaceX Dragon in transporting NASA astronauts to orbit. The Starliner capsule rode to orbit atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from NASA's Kennedy Space Center near Cape Canaveral, Florida. Wilmore and Williams reached the International Space Station the next day, June 6, 2024, where they were expected to remain for about 10 days before returning home. Instead, the two astronauts quickly became fixtures of the news cycle for months when the vehicle that sent them to the space station encountered a series of technical failures. When the Starliner made it to the space station, engineers discovered a slew of helium leaks and problems with the craft's propulsion system that for months hampered Starliner's return to Earth. Williams and Wimore's fate remained uncertain for months as NASA and Boeing deliberated on how best to get them home. But NASA and Boeing ultimately decided that the troubled Starliner capsule wasn't safe enough to crew and would instead return to Earth without them. Trump signs order that could ease regulations on SpaceX operations, including in Florida
SpaceX and Elon Musk just notched a significant win with President Donald Trump's latest executive order. Trump on Wednesday, Aug. 13, signed an executive order that eases many federal regulatory restrictions on commercial spaceflight companies in the U.S. Though SpaceX is not mentioned by name in the order, the commercial spaceflight company perhaps stands to gain the most from the move due to its many lucrative government contracts and its active launch cadence. The order also comes more than two months since Trump and Musk had a very public feud over a spending bill that led to a falling-out between the once-close allies – and threats that could have hampered U.S. spaceflight ambitions. Here's everything to know about Trump's commercial spaceflight executive order, as well as SpaceX's long battle with government regulators. Trump signs executive order on commercial rocket launches Trump's order directs the U.S. transportation secretary to eliminate or expedite environmental reviews for launch appovals administered by the Federal Aviation Administration, which licenses commercial rocket launches. The declaration further calls on the secretary to do away with "outdated, redundant or overly restrictive rules for launch and re-entry vehicles," the White House said in a statement provided to Reuters. Trump's order states that it is imperative to increase commercial rocket launches in the U.S. to "ensure that new space-based industries, space exploration capabilities, and cutting-edge defense systems are pioneered in America rather than by our adversaries." Interestingly, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, whose title is referenced several times in the order, was appointed in July as interim administrator of NASA. Following the news, Duffy praised Trump in a post on social media site X calling the order "visionary." "We're launching into the final frontier and this EO makes it possible for the U.S. to lead the world from earth travel to space travel," Duffy said in the post. Order could ease environmental regulations for SpaceX missions The executive order would directly benefit private spaceflight companies like Musk's SpaceX and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, both of which conduct the bulk of their operations in Texas. But SpaceX, which Musk founded in 2002, likely stands to gain the most from the relaxed regulatory environment. The commercial rocket launch company leads the way in U.S. spaceflight missions by routinely conducting Starlink satellite deployments using its Falcon 9 rocket from both California and Florida. SpaceX's Falcon 9, one of the world's most active rockets, is also the vehicle of choice for NASA when the space agency sends astronauts to the International Space Station. What's more, the SpaceX Crew Dragon Capsule perched atop the rocket is the only U.S. vehicle capable of transporting astronauts to and from the orbital laboratory. SpaceX additionally benefits from billions of dollars in contracts from not only NASA, but the Department of Defense by providing launch services for classified satellites and other payloads. Trump's order comes as SpaceX prepares to launch its massive 400-foot Starship rocket again in August from its Starbase headquarters in South Texas. Musk has also oft-stated his commitment to increasing the cadence of test missions for the spacecraft due to launch before the end of 2026 from Florida. The launch vehicle, regarded as the world's largest and most powerful rocket, is set to serve a pivotal role in future U.S. spaceflight. Starship is the centerpiece of Musk's vision of sending the first humans to Mars, and is also critical in NASA's plans to return astronauts to the moon's surface. Elon Musk, SpaceX have battled regulations for years Trump's executive order is undoubtedly a huge win for Musk, who has spent years pushing back on federal regulations he views as "superfluous." In September 2024, the FAA announced a proposal to hit SpaceX with $633,009 in civil penalties for what the agency claims were failures by the company to follow license requirements ahead of two separate launches in 2023. In response, Musk took to his social media site X to indicate his plans to sue the agency for "regulatory overreach." The FAA has previously said in a statement to the USA TODAY Network that it seeks to balance spaceflight progress with the need to ensure commercial launches are safely conducted. A record 148 FAA-licensed commercial space operations took place in 2024, up by more than 30% from the year prior, the agency has noted. But when it comes to Starship's development, SpaceX has become known for its risk-tolerant philosophy. Musk has stressed that rapid and frequent testing that sometimes leads to explosive ends can still provide data that helps engineers improve the vehicle's design. Environmental groups, others long oppose SpaceX rocket launches That aggressive approach, though, has rankled environmentalists and others who have criticized SpaceX's operations for potentially decimating regional ecosystems. The South Texas Environmental Justice Network, which has long opposed Musk and his space program, most recently issued a statement in May condemning the FAA for approving SpaceX's request to increase its Starship flight tests to 25 a year. In late June, Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum threatened to sue SpaceX if investigators determined that Musk's spaceflight company had contributed to undue pollution and marine life die-off in the country. What is the ULA Vulcan rocket? What to know ahead of Space Force national security mission
A spacecraft dubbed "the Vulcan" is about to embark on its first national security mission and just its third flight ever from Florida. But plenty more launches should be in the spacecrafts' future – integral as it is to the plans for the United Launch Alliance (ULA.) The Colorado-based launch service provider, a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin, has been developing the Vulcan to replace two other venerable rockets in its fleet. Now, the Vulcan's debut flight for the Space Force's Space Systems Command will be its first major test in operation. Here's everything to know about the Vulcan rocket, and the United Launch Alliance's future plans for the spacecraft. Florida's Space Coast: Vacationing in Florida and want to catch a rocket launch? What to know Vulcan rocket launch: When, what is Space Force national security mission? Launching atop 3 million pounds of thrust, the Vulcan rocket is due to send up a pair of U.S. Space Force national security satellites on one of the company's most ambitious-ever launches. The mission is expected to last more than seven hours and extend more than 22,000 miles above Earth to complete the orbital delivery – significantly higher than the International Space Station, which orbits about 250 miles high. The silver-and-red Vulcan, equipped with a whopping four side-mounted solid rocket boosters, will get off the ground from Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Liftoff is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 12, during an hourlong launch window opening at 7:59 p.m. ET. The secretive payloads, which ULA has said includes "demonstrations and experiments from Department of Defense customers," will be deployed to a geosynchronous orbit, which matches Earth's 24-hour rotation. The impending launch, known as USSF-106, marks a major milestone for the United Launch Alliance after its Vulcan rocket was certified in March to fly national security missions for Space Force. What is the ULA Vulcan? Vulcan stands at 202 feet tall when fully stacked and is designed to fly with anywhere from zero to six solid rocket boosters – in addition to the main 109-foot-tall booster. The rocket's Centaur V upper stage is about 38 feet tall and, with its own two engines providing 23,825 pounds of thrust, is what powers the spacecraft to reach such extreme orbital heights after separation. In addition to national security spaceflights, the Vulcan is also intended for future civil and commercial missions. When has the Vulcan launched? Vulcan's maiden spaceflight on Jan. 8, 2024, to propel Astrobotic's ill-fated Peregrine robotic lunar lander into space also doubled as a Space Force certification flight for national security missions. While the launch itself was a success, the Peregrine encountered a slew of issues that prevented it from ever making it to the moon. Vulcan last launched Oct. 4, 2024, on its second certification spaceflight, carrying a non-deployable test payload into deep space. While a nozzle malfunction on one of the two solid-rocket boosters sent up a shower of sparks 38 seconds after liftoff, the mission was still deemed a success. The upcoming inaugural national security mission Aug. 12 is slated to be the first of many for Vulcan. Ahead, the Space Force has assigned more than two dozen national security launches to Vulcan rockets at both Cape Canaveral and the Vandenberg Space Force Base in Southern California. Is Vulcan replacing Atlas V or Delta IV for United Launch Alliance? The United Launch Alliance is planning for the Vulcan to replace both its Atlas V and the now-retired Delta IV – becoming the company's main workhorse. Making its debut in 2002, the Atlas V flew 58 national security missions between 2007 and July 2024. On June 5, 2024, the rocket made its 100th launch in a long-awaited mission to send Boeing's now-infamous Starliner capsule toward the International Space Station with two NASA astronauts aboard. The flight marked the first crewed flight for both Atlas V and Starliner – a mission that made headlines in 2024 and 2025 when its astronauts instead returned to Earth on a SpaceX vehicle. Atlas V still flies from Cape Canaveral, having served as the launch vehicle for the first two of Amazon's Kuiper internet satellite deployments. However, Vulcan is also expected to soon begin delivering Kuiper satellites to low-Earth orbit as well. The Delta IV was retired in April 2024 after its final national security mission for the National Reconnaissance Office. The flight was not only the last Delta IV Heavy launch, but the final mission in ULA's Delta family of rockets. The Delta IV Heavy famously transported NASA's Parker Solar Probe in 2018 and served on the first orbital test flight of the Orion crew capsule in 2014 – though it never carried astronauts to space. Vulcan rocket launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida: Livestream, where to watch in person If weather conditions are ideal, spectators in Florida should be able to see the Vulcan rocket lifting off into the sky from as far as Jacksonville, Cape Coral and Miami. In fact, visibility from most of Florida is possible – well beyond the Space Coast, according to the United Launch Alliance. The ULA provided a helpful graphic showing the Vulcan rocket's intended flight path and where the spacecraft should be visible as it travels on a trajectory due east. Watching from home?
