India's software-as-a-service (SaaS) sector crossed $15 billion in annual revenue in FY24, boosted by more than 36 companies topping $100 million in annualised recurring revenue ( ARR ), according to a report by financial services firm JM Financial The report titled 'India's SaaS: Taking Wings,' which analysed 250 SaaS companies across industries with an ARR of at least $10 million, noted that the space grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 24% between FY19 and FY24.As a group, these SaaS companies are already profitable and set the stage for a wave of potential initial public offerings (IPOs), even as public market valuations undergo a reset, the report said.'If we look at it collectively, the larger ones (SaaS firms) will be much more profitable, and the smaller ones, some of them might be loss-making. As companies grow, they become very profitable because this is a very high gross margin business,' Abhishek Kumar , equity research analyst at JM Financial, who is also the co-author of this report, told ET.SaaS firms typically have high gross margins of 70-85%, and their fixed costs, such as investments in technology, don't rise in proportion to revenue. As a result, they become more profitable as they scale, he added. The report also highlighted a sharp correction in the valuations of the listed SaaS firms, particularly smaller horizontal players that build solutions meant to be used across multiple industries, with market capitalisations under $10 billion. This, it said, is due to a shift in investor focus from 'growth at all costs' to free cash flow and profitability. This shift has also made traditional valuation methods like the Rule of 40 less relevant. The Rule of 40 is a benchmark used to evaluate SaaS companies by combining their revenue growth rate and profit margin, where if the total is 40% or more, the company is considered financially healthy.Further, the report noted that investors are leaning into more granular metrics, focussing on how well companies retain customers, how quickly they recover customer acquisition costs, and the long-term value each customer brings. While the correction has been broad-based, larger SaaS firms have been more resilient than smaller ones, as investors prioritise revenue visibility, he said.A part of the correction also stems from the slowdown in growth post-Covid-19, Kumar of JM Financial noted, adding that unless there is a sharp bounce back, he does not see trading multiples going up.While horizontal SaaS companies, which offer broader, industry-agnostic solutions, still make up over half the market, vertical SaaS players are growing at a faster pace, the report said. It found that vertical SaaS firms grew at a CAGR of 26.3% between FY19 and FY24, compared to 22.3% for horizontal players. The vertical SaaS segment is led by companies in banking and financial services, such as Perfios and TransUnion Cibil; retail firms like Ayekart and Jumbotail; and logistics and ecommerce players like Shiprocket and Quest2Travel, among others.According to Kumar, the sector is expected to maintain its growth momentum. 'I don't see them (growth) accelerating immediately. But, I think they are still at a very early stage; barring a few, they are still small. So, they can very easily sustain this kind of 20-25% CAGR over the next few years. Some Indian SaaS companies have already entered public markets. Freshworks listed on the Nasdaq in 2021, while ecommerce software firm Unicommerce debuted on the Indian stock exchanges in August 2024. Customer engagement platform Capillary Technologies has also filed draft papers for an IPO , signalling further activity ahead in the public markets.

IT sector, GCCs emerging as drivers of Telangana's $ 1trillion economy goal

1 2 Hyderabad: The IT/ITeS sector, especially global capability centres (GCCs), have emerged as a key drivers of Telangana's vision to become a $1 trillion economy, Telangana special chief secretary for IT, Sanjay Kumar, said on Friday. "The govt continues its vision of driving towards a one trillion-dollar economy with IT/ITeS being the key driver, and we believe govts are not just regulators but co-creators of the future. We aim to transform Telangana from a premier IT hub into a global leader in emerging technology such as AI and Quantum through innovation and R&D engagement," Kumar said at the GCC X Summit organised by HYSEA and 3AI here. Pointing to Hyderabad's growing stature as a GCC hub, Sameer Dhanrajani, CEO, 3AI, said the city is giving stiff competition to traditional IT hubs like Bengaluru and attracted 70 GCCs in FY25 alone. He said this was also the reason why 3AI decided to bring the GCC X conclave, which is held every year in Bengaluru, to Hyderabad this year. Cognizant adds 7,500 in Q2, lifts outlook on robust deal wins

Bengaluru: While TCS is grappling with layoffs and other Indian IT firms with minimal net headcount additions, Nasdaq-listed Cognizant added 7,500 employees sequentially in the June quarter, bringing its workforce to 3.3 lakh. A significant portion of this came from onboarding fresh graduates in India. The company aims to hire 15,000 to 20,000 freshers this year, similar to last year. CEO S Ravi Kumar said the talent strategy will include hiring from non-traditional streams—biology majors, chartered accountants, legal experts—and training them on AI use cases relevant to their domains. "Our operating model is changing—we are moving towards smaller, agile teams that deliver specific outcomes," he added. Managers will lead teams comprising both human employees and AI agents. Kumar said freshers are now expected to write code alongside AI. "We want the productive to be more productive. We want broader access to these technologies so people can reimagine delivery for clients," he said. CFO Jatin Dalal said, "There will be some increase in the second half, but not large, as we double down on AI-led productivity and doing more with less. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Elevate Business Writing With This Desktop App Grammarly Learn More Undo We'll keep hiring recent graduates while optimizing through AI." The company raised the lower end of its full-year revenue guidance to 4–6% in constant currency after a strong Q2 performance. It reported 7.2% YoY constant currency revenue growth, driven by execution and large deal wins. The Belcan acquisition contributed about 400 basis points to this growth. Last year, Cognizant acquired US engineering R&D firm Belcan for $1.3 billion—its second-largest deal. This growth surpasses the upper end of its previous guidance. Cognizant closed six large deals in the quarter, including two mega contracts over $1 billion each. Kumar said, "We are gaining momentum in our execution, which is why we've raised the lower end of our guidance." Growth was fuelled by digital transformation and AI-led deals, especially in healthcare and financial services. AI is creating new tech services spending cycles, especially across finance, procurement, legal, and R&D—beyond traditional productivity-led arbitrage. The company now runs 2,500 active AI projects, up from 1,400 last quarter, many aligned with growth and innovation. Kumar added that both growth "swim lanes"—productivity and innovation—were active this quarter. Dalal emphasized that while the macro environment remains uncertain, narrowing the guidance is not due to visibility concerns. "Our outlook assumes no major macro improvement, but clients are clearly engaging in innovation spend," he said. Products and resources grew 14.7% in constant currency, followed by BFSI (6%), healthcare (5.3%), and communications (2.2%). Cognizant also plans to return $2 billion to shareholders via dividends and buybacks.

The bank's asset quality showed an improvement as gross non-performing assets (NPAs) declined to 2.99 per cent at the end of the June quarter from 3.88 per cent a year ago. Similarly, net NPAs declined to 1.2 per cent, as against 1.87 per cent in the year-ago period. City Union Bank Q1 results analysis - JM Financial According to analysts at JM Financial, with a strong capital position (CAR at 23.1 per cent), a robust technology platform enabling scalable co-lending partnerships, and the ability to preserve margins, the bank is well-positioned to sustain its growth trajectory. The bank's minimal exposure to unsecured segments further underpins its resilient asset quality. The bank's net profit increased 6 per cent quarter-on-quarter (Q-o-Q), supported by 4 per cent Q-o-Q growth in NII and stable operating expenses. However, net interest margins (NIMs) moderated by 6 basis points sequentially, 3.5 per cent, though management expects them to remain steady, aided by deposit re-pricing in Q2FY26. "At 1.3x FY27E BVPS, the stock offers a compelling risk-reward profile. Sustained growth momentum, improving operating leverage, and prudent risk management should support further re-rating," the brokerage said in a note. JM Financial raised its FY26 earnings estimates by 5 per cent to factor in better-than-expected operating performance and build in average ROA/ROE of 1.5/13 per cent over FY26E–FY27E. The brokerage maintained a 'Buy' rating with a revised target price of ₹250, valuing the bank at 1.6x FY27E BVPS. Emkay Global Emkay Global raised earning estimates for FY26-28E by 2-4 per cent, factoring in the better growth and asset quality outcome. Anlysts believe that CUB's healthy growth, coupled with strong RoA delivery (1.5-1.6 per cent over FY26-28E), capital buffers, and improving retail orientation, would help sustain premium valuations. The brokerage retained 'Buy' rating on the stock with revised target of ₹250 (up 19 per cent), now valuing the stock now at 1.5x Jun-27E ABV from 1.4x Mar-27E ABV earlier. However, it flagged macro deterioration hurting asset quality, higher ECL hit, KMP attrition in its retail banking team as key risks for the businesses.
