Jake Retzlaff still loves BYU but expresses faith in his fresh start at Tulane

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Jake Retzlaff is embracing some new nicknames.
'BYJew' is an
endearment of the past
. Now, 'Kosher Cannon,' 'Shabbat Shotgun' and 'Bayou Jew' are among the monikers mentioned by
the sizeable Jewish community
at Retzlaff's new school, Tulane.
It's a fresh start for Retzlaff, but one the former BYU quarterback wasn't necessarily seeking until May, when he was named in a since-dismissed civil sexual assault lawsuit.
Retzlaff maintains that he loved playing for the Cougars, despite being one of very few Jews on BYU's predominantly Mormon campus in Provo, Utah.
'BYU was an amazing place. It made me into an amazing human being. I feel like it helped me grow in so many ways on and especially off the field,' Retzlaff said, wearing a Star of David on a chain around his neck. 'It helped me connect stronger with my faith than I did before, because I was in a place where it was so faith-oriented that it was just right in front of you.'
Retzlaff went 11-2 as a starter for a 2024 BYU team that finished the season at No. 13 in the final
AP Top 25 Poll
.
His
decision to withdraw
came while he reportedly faced a suspension for acknowledging what he described as a consensual sexual relationship while defending himself against the lawsuit. The university's honor code requires students to abstain from premarital sex.
Speaking on Friday for the first time since arriving at Tulane about a week ago, Retzlaff declined to address the factors that led him to leave BYU, where he spent the past two years.
'I'm just worried about where my feet are,' Retzlaff said. 'I'm just worried about this next chapter, being at Tulane, winning football games.'
Tulane coach Jon Sumrall said the university's administration vetted Retzlaff before clearing the way for Sumrall to bring him to the Green Wave, where he'll now have to outperform three other transfer QBs — Kadin Semonza from Ball State, Donovan Leary from Illinois and Brendan Sullivan from Iowa — to win the starting job.
'I was very transparent with the guys in the (quarterback) room. I was also very up front with Jake,' Sumrall said. 'None of them were promised anything in regards to who's going to start.'
Retzlaff said he had other offers, but remembered fondly his recruitment by the then-coach of Troy in 2023 — Sumrall.
Retzlaff recalled telling his father, Steve, that he could envision playing for Sumrall one day.
'I knew he's a guy I want to be around,' Retzlaff said.
Tulane didn't have a scholarship available for Ratzlaff, but the 22-year-old graduate transfer said that being a walk-on suits him because he plays with a chip on his shoulder and doesn't want to be short-sighted about money at the expense of setting himself up for long-term success.
'I know that I'm going to get what I deserve, hopefully, at the next level,' Retzlaff said. 'If that means sacrificing a little bit of money on my side (now) .. so what? Let's go win football games.'
First, he has to learn a new offense, which he said has meant a lot of late nights. He also is working to acclimatize himself to oppressively hot, heavy air of swampy south Louisiana in the summer, even wearing a sweat absorbent wrist band on his throwing arm for the first time.
'I'm soaked right now,' he said after practice, contrasting his new home to the cooler, mountainous, semi-arid Salt Lake area. 'I haven't sweat this much in my life.'
One adjustment he won't mind is being on a campus where around 40% of students are Jewish.
'It's a cool deal. It's so opposite' from BYU, Retzlaff said. 'My faith is super important to me. So, that fact just made it that much sweeter to come here.'
He said he's felt welcome in the locker room as well.
'The guys have been nothing but great to me — every guy on the team and especially the quarterback room,' Retzlaff said, noting that he has tried to eat each meal of each day with different players in an effort to get to know them better.
Whoever plays quarterback for Tulane will do so for a team that has appeared in three straight American Conference title games, but also had a lot of turnover after last season — including the loss of one-year starter Darian Mensah to Duke in the transfer portal.
Sumrall not only isn't projecting Mensah's replacement, but said he might play two quarterbacks in the Green Wave's season opener against Northwestern in New Orleans on Aug. 30.
'No matter what, this is a new chapter in my life,' Retzlaff said. 'I'm excited to attack it and make the most of it.'

Raiders trade CB Jakorian Bennett to Eagles for DT Thomas Booker IV, AP source says

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders are trading cornerback Jakorian Bennett to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for defensive tackle Thomas Booker IV, a person with knowledge of the deal said Monday. That person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the trade is pending physicals on both players. Bennett, drafted in the fourth round two years ago out of Maryland, started seven games for the Raiders last season before being shut down because of a torn labrum that required surgery. He played well as a cover cornerback, but Bennett was running with the second and third teams this training camp under first-year coach Pete Carroll. At 5-foot-10, Bennett doesn't fit Carroll's preference of playing taller cornerbacks. Six-foot Eric Stokes and 6-2 rookie Darien Porter have been competing with the starters this camp. Booker started one game and played in all 17 last season for the Eagles. He also appeared in four postseason games for the Super Bowl champions. But Booker, a 2022 fifth-round draft pick of Houston, was fifth on the depth chart at a deep defensive tackle position this season. The Raiders released defensive tackle Christian Wilkins on July 24 over a dispute over a recovery plan for a broken foot from last season. The club is attempting to void the remaining $35.25 million of Wilkins' deal, and he has filed a grievance with the NFL Players Association. ___ ___ AP NFL:

Top-seeded Zverev beats defending champ Popyrin to reach semifinals in Toronto

TORONTO (AP) — Top-seeded Alexander Zverev rallied to defeat No. 18 Alexei Popyrin of Australia 6-7 (8), 6-4, 6-3 on Monday to reach the semifinals of the National Bank Open. Zverev, the 2017 tournament champion, will face either No. 11 seed Karen Khachanov of Russia or No. 26 Alex Michelsen of the U.S. Zverev, a German who is ranked No. 3, advanced to his 75th ATP Tour semifinal. He is looking for his 25th tournament title and eighth in an ATP 1000 Masters tournament. The other quarterfinals are Tuesday. Second-seeded Taylor Fritz will take on No. 6 Andrey Rublev of Russia, while No. 4 Ben Shelton is slated to meet No. 9 Alex de Minaur of Australia. Both semifinals go Wednesday ahead of Thursday's title match. Popyrin took the first set when his gentle backhand volley after a long rally grazed the top of the net and dropped for the winning point — much to the delight of his fans, including one with an inflatable yellow kangaroo. Zverev responded by immediately firing a ball completely out of Sobeys Stadium in frustration, but quickly regrouped to go up 2-0 in the second set. Popyrin grabbed a break of his own before holding serve at 4-4. Zverev, who won the Canadian title in Montreal eight years ago when he defeated childhood idol Roger Federer, took a 5-4 lead and then again broke his opponent to even the match. Ousted at the quarterfinal stage of last year's tournament, Zverev got another break to go up 2-0 in the third set before serving out the match. The 28-year-old, who lost to top-ranked Jannik Sinner in the final at this year's Australian Open and made the French Open quarters, improved to 4-0 all-time against Popyrin, including a third-round victory at the Paris Olympics. Zverev has two tournament wins on clay this year, and is the highest-ranked player competing in a Toronto field lacking some significant star power after Sinner, No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, No. 5 Jack Draper and No. 6 Novak Djokovic all skipped the hard-court event.

Alexander, Peña help Astros beat Marlins and snap Miami's five-game winning streak

MIAMI (AP) — Jason Alexander pitched six scoreless innings, Jeremy Peña doubled twice and the Houston Astros used a five-run fourth to beat the Miami Marlins 8-2 on Monday night. Alexander picked up his second win of the season after holding Miami to three hits. He struck out six and walked one. The Astros built a 5-0 lead during a disastrous fourth by Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara (6-10), who was perfect his first time through the Houston order before giving up six hits in the inning. Peña led off the fourth with a double. Jesús Sánchez then drove in Peña with a double in his first game against his former team, which dealt him to Houston at the trade deadline. Yainer Diaz added a two-run double, Carlos Correa had an RBI single and Christian Walker drove in another run on a fielder's choice. Alcantara allowed nine hits and six runs. He struck out five over seven innings and threw 100 pitches. TIGERS 6, TWINS 3 DETROIT (AP) — Kerry Carpenter homered in a three-run sixth inning and Detroit rallied for a win over Minnesota. Wenceel Pérez and Dillon Dingler also homered for the Tigers, while Ryan Jeffers, Trevor Larnach and Matt Wallner had homers for Minnesota. Detroit has won six of its last eight games since losing 12 of 13. The Twins have lost five of six. Casey Mize (10-4) picked up the win, allowing three runs in six innings while Kyle Finnegan pitched the ninth for his second Tigers save. Noah Davis (0-2) took the loss in relief. PHILLIES 13, ORIOLES 3 PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kyle Schwarber homered twice, including a grand slam Philadelphia's eight-run sixth inning, and the Phillies pounded Baltimore. Schwarber finished with six RBIs, running his major league-leading total to 94 on the season. Schwarber's first homer of the game was a two-run shot deep into the second deck that tied it at 3 in the third. He heard 'MVP! MVP!' chants when he came to the plate in the sixth. Schwarber, the All-Star Game MVP, launched his NL-best 40th of the season into the right-center seats off Yaramil Hiraldo for a grand slam that sent the crowd of 41,099 into a frenzy. Harrison Bader homered for the first time since he was acquired by the Phillies at the trade deadline, a tiebreaking three-run shot earlier in the sixth. The Phillies added closer Jhoan Duran and Bader in trades on consecutive days with Minnesota. With his 102.5 mph fastball and electric entrance, Duran was an instant fan favorite in Philly. Bader made his case with a homer off Corbin Martin. BREWERS 3, BRAVES 1 ATLANTA (AP) — Isaac Collins hit a three-run homer, Quinn Priester allowed just one more hit over seven innings after surrendering a first-pitch home run, and Milwaukee beat Atlanta. Priester (11-2) struck out four and walked two while throwing 90 pitches as the Brewers improved to a major league-best 68-44. Jurickson Profar hit Priester's first pitch of the game over the right-field wall to put the Braves ahead. It was Profar's fourth home run of the year. Collins, the NL rookie of the month, made it 3-1 in the fourth with his drive to right. Erick Fedde (3-12), who made his first home start with the Braves, pitched 5 1/3 innings while giving up three runs. Aaron Bummer came in as relief and posted the first strikeout of the game for Atlanta in the seventh inning. PIRATES 5, GIANTS 4 PITTSBURGH (AP) — Isiah Kiner-Falefa's fielder's choice scored Jack Suwinski with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as Pittsburgh rallied to beat San Francisco. Kiner-Falefa hit a hard ground ball to first baseman Rafael Devers but Suwinski beat the throw home. Joey Bart's RBI single off Randy Rodriguez (3-3) earlier in the inning tied the score. It was the fifth walk-off RBI of Kiner-Falefa's career. Dauri Moreta (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning in his second appearance of the season for the win. GUARDIANS 7, METS 6, 10 INNING NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Alonso hit his 251st career homer Monday night to pull within one of Darryl Strawberry's New York Mets franchise record, but Cleveland earned a 10-inning win after squandering a five-run lead. Gabriel Arias' 440-foot, three-run homer to left-center ended a five-run sixth inning against Sean Manaea, who surrendered RBI singles to David Fry and Carlos Santana earlier in the inning. Alonso, starting at designated hitter for the 59th time in his career, hit a 388-foot blast to left-center in the bottom half against Slade Cecconi. The slugger has three homers in his last four games. Alonso had his fourth hit, an RBI single, in the eighth, before Mark Vientos delivered the game-tying sacrifice fly. Cade Smith (4-4) escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the ninth. Automatic runner Daniel Schneemann scored the tie-breaking run in the 10th, when third baseman Brett Baty threw the ball wide of second on David Fry's bunt against Ryan Helsley (3-2). Arias added a sacrifice fly. Nic Enright earned his first career save despite allowing Baty's two-out RBI single in the 10th. RED SOX 8, ROYALS 5 BOSTON (AP) — Jarren Duran hit a three-run homer and Brayan Bello pitched six effective innings, helping Boston beat Kansas City for their sixth consecutive victory. Rob Refsnyder drove in two runs, and Duran added a leaping, run-saving catch in front of the Green Monster in the fourth. Bello (8-5) allowed an unearned run and six hits. The right-hander has surrendered three earned runs or fewer in 13 of his last 14 outings. The Royals got back-to-back home runs from Vinnie Pasquantino and Maikel Garcia off Jorge Alcala as part of a four-run eighth. But Aroldis Chapman handled the ninth for his 21st save.
