Tencent increases Korea music exposure ahead of China K-Pop move
Tencent will buy the stake from BTS-agency Hybe Co Ltd., which is selling its remaining 2.2 million shares in SM Entertainment at 110,000 won each, a 15.3% discount to Tuesday's close, according to a regulatory filing.
The move comes as China is widely expected to lift its nearly decade old unofficial ban on K-pop performances in mainland China. That potentially opens South Korean companies such as SM Entertainment to resume music distribution through the relationship with Tencent.
Before the restrictions, China was among the fast growing markets for K-pop.
China imposed the so-called 'K-wave ban' in 2016 in retaliation for South Korea allowing the US military to deploy missile defence system called Thaad, or Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense, in its soil.
Tencent, China's gaming and social media leader, was not available for an immediate comment.
For Tencent, the deal would mark its first major investment in South Korea's music industry in years. It owns a 4.3% stake in YG Entertainment Inc. and a 5.95% holding in Kakao Corp., South Korea's biggest Internet company which is also the largest shareholder of SM Entertainment.
The selldown will bring an end to the bitter battle for the control of SM Entertainment. Hybe and Kakao Corp sought to buy SM Entertainment in 2023, in what would have been one of the country's biggest media sector deals. But Hybe dropped its pursuit of SM after the bidding war pushed up the SM stock price and making it too expensive.
The deal also resulted in Kakao founder Brian Kim getting caught up in the regulatory cross hairs, over charges that he allegedly tried to manipulate the SM Entertainment shares. Kim has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
South Korean entertainment stocks have been among the biggest gainers in the Korean equity market this year, driven by expectations they will be shielded from tariff wars. The rally is also underpinned by expectations of China lifting its K-pop ban. SM Entertainment shares have rallied 72% so far this year while YG Entertainment Inc. jumped 77%.
Hybe said in a statement it divested non-core assets and the proceeds will be used to fund future growth. –BLOOMBERG

OpenAI releases free, downloadable models in competition catch-up
SAN FRANCISCO: OpenAI on Tuesday released two new artificial intelligence (AI) models that can be downloaded for free and altered by users, to challenge similar offerings by US and Chinese competition. The release of gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b "open-weight language models" comes as the ChatGPT-maker is under pressure to share inner workings of its software in the spirit of its origin as a nonprofit. "Going back to when we started in 2015, OpenAI's mission is to ensure AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) that benefits all of humanity," said OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman. An open-weight model, in the context of generative AI, is one in which the trained parameters are made public, enabling users to fine-tune it. Meta touts its open-source approach to AI, and Chinese AI startup DeepSeek rattled the industry with its low-cost, high-performance model boasting an open weight approach that allows users to customise the technology. "This is the first time that we're releasing an open-weight model in language in a long time, and it's really incredible," OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman said during a briefing with journalists. The new, text-only models deliver strong performance at low cost, according to OpenAI, which said they are suited for AI jobs like searching the internet or executing computer code, and are designed to be easy to run on local computer systems. "We are quite hopeful that this release will enable new kinds of research and the creation of new kinds of products," Altman said. OpenAI said it is working with partners including French telecommunications giant Orange and cloud-based data platform Snowflake on real-world uses of the models. The open-weight models have been tuned to thwart being used for malicious purposes, according to OpenAI. Altman early this year said his company had been "on the wrong side of history" when it came to being open about how its technology works. He later announced that OpenAI will continue to be run as a nonprofit, abandoning a contested plan to convert into a for-profit organisation. The structural issue had become a point of contention, with major investors pushing for better returns. That plan faced strong criticism from AI safety activists and co-founder Elon Musk, who sued the company he left in 2018, claiming the proposal violated its founding philosophy. In the revised plan, OpenAI's money-making arm will be open to generate profits but will remain under the nonprofit board's supervision. – AFP

iKON's Jay To Perform In KL This Year? Organiser Teases Mystery K-pop Idol
The guessing games show no signs of stopping. Lately, a number of brands, event organisers, and companies have been teasing collaborations with K-pop idols, some even hinting that the superstars will be making special appearances in Malaysia in the near future. It appears that we're adding one more to this list of mystery idols coming to our shores. Here's what we know so far: On Wednesday (6th August), event organiser Euphoryk 乐园 teased fans with news that a certain K-pop idol will be making an appearance in Kuala Lumpur soon. The post featured a silhouette of the male artist, along with a couple of clues: he is the main vocalist of a group and has just completed his military service. Obviously, it didn't take long for fans to start guessing, and the majority believe it's most likely Jay (김진환) from iKON (아이콘). The idol's official role in the group is main vocalist, and he completed his military service earlier in April. Fans also recognised the silhouette used in the teaser, as it matches one of the promotional photos from his solo album '[OBEY]', which was released last month. At the time of writing, there has been no official confirmation on whether the event will be a fan meeting or a full concert. However, based on the organiser's track record, the latter seems highly likely. That said, it could also be a fan-con, an event where the singer may both perform and interact with fans, potentially including songs from his solo work as well as iKON's discography. For now, we'll have to wait for the official announcement, so stay tuned for those updates. If the mystery idol turns out to be Jay, will you be saving up for tickets? Source: Instagram

(Video) DOLLA & KIIRAS Team Up For 'MWA' & 'ZILLER' Dance Challenges
Newly debuted K-pop girl group KIIRAS (키라스) received a warm welcome during their first visit to Malaysia. The trip also marked a special homecoming for leader Ling Ling (링링/黃羚棱), who hails from Klang. In addition to performing at their first international showcase during 'The Music Journey 2 Roadshow', the group took part in several activities, including meeting fashion designer Peony Sin Hui Wen (萧惠玟) and filming a dance challenge in front of their billboard in Bukit Bintang. Speaking of dance challenges, the girls also delighted fans by performing DOLLA's 'MWA' challenge during a recent stage appearance. So, it was only natural for them to do it again, this time with the artists themselves while they were still in town. Watch the collaboration below: Yesterday (Wednesday, 6th August), DOLLA and KIIRAS shared a video on Instagram of themselves doing the former's 'MWA' dance challenge. The clip was filmed at a futsal court, though the exact location was not disclosed. The two groups were divided into trios, with 2 KIIRAS members paired with 1 DOLLA member in each group. Luckily for fans, the two groups didn't just do 1 but 2 dance challenges, with DOLLA taking part in KIIRAS' 'ZILLER' dance challenge with the members. Fans were delighted by the collaboration, as it also helped shine a spotlight on more Malaysian talent on the global stage. While many were excited to see the two girl groups teaming up, Ling Ling also took part in a special collaboration of her own. On the same day, KIIRAS shared a video on their official Instagram account of their leader taking on the 'KILL MA BO$$' dance challenge with her sunbaenim, Isaac Voo (邬凯名/아이젝), a fellow Malaysian and K-pop idol from the boy group SKYE. Fun fact: Both Isaac and Ling Ling are known as the first male and female Malaysian K-pop idols, respectively. With Ling Ling leading KIIRAS, fans are hopeful for future musical collaborations with DOLLA, SKYE, or other Malaysian artists. There's no doubt that such projects have the potential to break records and make history.
