Luxury vehicle crash: Drunk Porsche driver hits taxi in Cape Town CBD
Among the week's standout incidents was a serious motor vehicle accident involving a yellow Porsche and a minibus taxi on FW de Klerk Boulevard outbound, near Marine Drive in the CBD.
Traffic officers who responded to the scene arrested the driver of the Porsche for driving under the influence.
The suspect recorded a breathalyser reading of 0.52mg/1000ml, more than double the legal limit of 0.24mg/1000ml.
'This is just the latest in a series of troubling incidents involving high-end sports cars,' said Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security.
'To be caught driving under the influence so early in the morning, and at more than twice the legal limit, is deeply concerning. This accident could have had far more serious consequences.'
City of Cape Town traffic officers recorded 36 351 offences, executed 1 251 warrants of arrest, and impounded 179 public transport vehicles over the week.
Notably, 23 of the 26 arrests made were for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Metro police made a significant contribution, arresting 50 suspects and issuing 2 477 fines.
One notable arrest occurred in Hanover Park over the weekend, where officers – assisted by the ShotSpotter gunfire detection system – responded to a report of multiple gunshots.
A 23-year-old suspect was arrested after being found in possession of a 9mm pistol with a filed-off serial number and 11 rounds of ammunition.
Law Enforcement officers were also active, making 159 arrests and issuing 7 021 fines during routine patrols.
Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town's Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) fielded 1 632 calls over the weekend, including reports of 110 assaults and 53 vehicle and pedestrian accidents.

Truck crash traps driver near Newcastle
KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service responded to a truck collision on the R34 near Newcastle last night (August 10). According to Craig Botha of KZPA, a truck lost control and collided with trees, resulting in the driver becoming entrapped. 'Paramedics arrived on the scene swiftly and provided immediate medical attention to the injured driver,' said Botha. Working in collaboration with Fire and Rescue Services, Botha said the patient was successfully extricated using specialised equipment. 'The driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.' The exact cause of the collision is still unclear at this stage and will be subject to further police investigations. 2 Limpopo police sergeants die in domestic violence incident
Two police sergeants died in a suspected domestic violence incident at Nkuna Kraal Mall in Nkuzana village in the Mopani District of Limpopo, on Saturday afternoon. Polokwane Review reports that, according to the Limpopo police, the female victim, a sergeant stationed at Beit Bridge Port of Entry, was with two adults and her six-year-old child when her estranged husband, also a sergeant, attached to the Thohoyandou K9 Unit, approached her. The couple had reportedly been separated for about seven months. Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says an argument broke out, during which the female sergeant was shot in her upper body, allegedly by her husband with his service firearm. 'When he attempted to run to the vehicle to flee the scene, the community who observed the entire incident chased and assaulted him, setting him alight next to his vehicle. The vehicle was burnt beyond recognition,' his statement reads. Ledwaba says the female sergeant and her husband died at the scene. The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, expresses shock at the tragedy and urged SAPS members to seek professional help for domestic disputes rather than resorting to violence. 'The SAPS has in place an Employee Health and Wellness Programme that is offered free of charge. We call upon members to make use of these services that are at their disposal,' she says.
