Egypt's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, met on Monday with Cuban Ambassador to Cairo, Alexander Pellicer, to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation in the healthcare sector, with a particular focus on pharmaceutical manufacturing and vaccine technology, according to an official statement.
The meeting, held at the Ministry's headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, highlighted the deep-rooted historical ties between Egypt and Cuba. Egypt signs vaccine production agreement with UAE's Al Qalaa, China's Red Flag

Egypt's Holding Company for Biological Products and Vaccines (VACSERA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with UAE-based Al Qalaa Investments and China's Red Flag to expand its capacity in human and veterinary vaccine production and develop plasma-derived therapies, the Ministry of Health announced on Monday. Health Ministry spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said the agreement supports Egypt's national strategy to attract foreign investment, localise biotechnology industries, and advance scientific research and innovation under the country's Vision 2030 sustainable development framework. The partnership aims to position Egypt as a regional hub for vaccine manufacturing and exports—particularly to African and Arab markets—while ensuring self-sufficiency in critical vaccines and plasma-based products. Sherif El-Fil, CEO of VACSERA, described the deal as a major step toward transferring advanced vaccine manufacturing technologies to Egypt. He said it would secure the domestic supply of safe, effective vaccines and open new export opportunities. El-Fil added that the collaboration will also strengthen VACSERA's capabilities in plasma processing and biopharmaceutical production, reinforcing its role as a key regional player in the vaccine industry. The MoU was signed by Sherif El-Fil for VACSERA, Li Yang, CEO of China's Red Flag, and Ashraf El-Badawy, CEO of UAE's Al Qalaa Investments.

Egypt provides state-funded treatment for about 1.6 million citizens in H1 2025

Egypt's Ministry of Health and Population announced on Saturday that 1,890,242 state-funded treatment decisions were issued between January and June 2025, at a total cost of EGP 13.2bn, according to an official statement. Ministry spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said that 1,584,082 citizens received the state-funded treatment across a wide range of medical specialties, including oncology (with targeted therapies), liver diseases, blood disorders, immunology, general and spinal surgery, kidney dialysis, ENT, dermatology, neurology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and rehabilitation medicine. Abdel Ghaffar emphasised that these efforts align with national objectives to expand healthcare access, streamline administrative procedures, and improve service quality as part of the president's healthcare agenda. As part of Egypt's broader digital transformation strategy, Assistant Minister for Therapeutic Affairs Peter Wagih noted that 4,654 patients were assessed via video conferencing, allowing them to obtain treatment decisions without needing to visit medical authorities in person. This initiative aims to accelerate care delivery and ease the burden on patients. In support of people with disabilities, Mohamed Abdel Hakim, Head of the Central Administration for Therapeutic Medicine, reported that 153,339 individuals underwent medical assessments for the issuance of integrated service cards, in coordination with hospitals affiliated with the military, police, and universities. Meanwhile, Mohamed Al-Akkad, Director General of the Specialized Medical Councils, said that 39,989 citizens were medically evaluated for tax- and duty-exempt vehicles, and 123,141 others underwent assessments under the 'Takaful and Karama' social protection programme. The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and governance in the assessment process, as well as its dedication to facilitating access for people with disabilities to both healthcare and social support services. Upon completion of medical evaluations, applicants' data is forwarded to the Ministry of Social Solidarity to finalise the issuance of their integrated service cards.
