Ted Cruz defends Sydney Sweeney amid American Eagle ad backlash
After an ad starring Sydney Sweeney outraged viewers, Sen. Ted Cruz is coming to her defense. The Texas Republican took to X July 29 to blast the "crazy left" for criticizing Sweeney's American Eagle denim jeans campaign as a dog whistle for eugenics and the glorification of whiteness. Responding to a New York Post article, which detailed the controversy, Cruz wrote: "Wow. Now the crazy Left has come out against beautiful women. I'm sure that will poll well…." Sydney Sweeney, an American Eagle ad campaign and why it sparked backlash Part of a larger partnership between the "Euphoria" actress and the popular clothier, the ad campaign used wordplay to describe Sweeney as having "good genes," with the latter word doing double duty, meaning not just her DNA but also the denim on her body (which was American Eagle made). Soon after the campaign dropped, people began to sound the alarm on what they saw as a dangerous message about the beauty ideal, race and "good" versus "bad" genes. Cruz joined a parade of notables adding their two cents, including "Bachelor" star Gabby Windey and even Doja Cat, who mocked the ad in a TikTok video. In one of several videos for the advertising blitz, Sweeney, clad in a denim-on-denim outfit, says: "Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color." "My jeans are blue," she says as the camera pans across her blue denim and her blue eyes. Sydney Sweeney critics compare jeans campaign to Brooke Shields' Calvin Klein ad Consumers were quick to point out what they saw as the regressive nature of the material. A blonde shown sensually, catering to the male gaze, they argued, was a stereotypical symbol of a bygone era. "How far back do you plan on going? Do you still wanna vote?" one commenter asked, while another chided: "You accept these jobs that objectify your body. Fight the patriarchy, don't join it." Even more concerning, critics argued, was the use of Sweeney as the archetype of "good genes." Defined generally as the use of selective breeding to "improve" the human race through emphasis on desirable traits, the pseudoscience of eugenics has a dark backstory, used in the past as a vehicle for racial violence and sterilization. Lifting Sweeney's genes up as "good," critics said, notches into a painful and dangerous history. That the controversy stems from a denim ad, and one from a company with "American" in the name, further complicates the reception. Americana and denim go hand in hand, the stiff fabric harkening back to cowboy culture, workmen's uniforms and other mythologized aspects of the national identity.

Serena Page, Leah Kateb, and More ‘Love Island USA' Alums Weigh In on JaNa and Kenny's Split
They say you shouldn't take sides when your friends break if your friends are JaNa Craig and Kenny Rodriguez, this rule definitely does not apply. In the wake of JaNa and Kenny's breakup, several Love Island USA alums—including JaNa's besties and fellow season 6 stars Serena Page and Leah Kateb—have reacted to the news of the split on Instagram. JaNa and Kenny were one of the strongest couples to come out of Love Island USA season 6, and the two even star on Peacock's Beyond the Villa. Earlier this week, the two abruptly split and fellow Love Island USA alums began unfollowing Kenny, raising eyebrows and grabbing the attention of fans everywhere. To recap: JaNa confirmed the split in an Instagram story shared Tuesday, July 29, and while she didn't give a reason for the breakup, she did tell fans that it was 'terrible, disgusting, and disappointing.' Meanwhile, Kenny put out a statement of his own on Instagram, writing in part, 'Sometimes, despite how deeply you care for someone, you come to the hard truth that the relationship was not something that could last long-term.' You'll be shocked to learn that these vague platitudes did not help his case. In fact, Kenny's response prompted Charmane Smith (a close friend of JaNa's) to post on her page, seemingly implying that JaNa had found incriminating information on Kenny's phone with messages like, 'I don't like black women, I thought I would get more money from this, I'm faking this relationship, going on the show would be for clout, I can't wait to be done w this so I can fuck hella b*tches.' Charmane's Instagram has since been made private, but JaNa's other close friends—including Love Island USA season 6 alums Leah, Serena, Liv Walker, and Kaylor Martin—followed, calling Kenny out and publicly declaring themselves #TeamJaNa. Serena Page Comments on JaNa and Kenny's Split Serena (aka one of JaNa's best friends and member of the PPGs) kept things civil, asking fans to remember that 'it may just be tea for y'all but that's not the case for us.' That being said, she made it clear on which side she stands, writing, 'Y'all already know how I'm coming behind JaNa, and TRUST so does he.' Leah Kateb Calls Kenny 'Racist' on Instagram Leah Kateb—the third Power Puff Girl in season 6's Love Island USA trio—also weighed in on Instagram. Leah reposted JaNa's response to Kenny, in which she called her ex a 'manipulative liar,' and added her own two cents. '@kennyrodriguez Put a sock in it ChatGPT headass,' she wrote. 'Tell the truth for once! Racist, clout/money hungry and a scammer since Day 1!!!!!' She also sent a message of support to JaNa, telling fans not to worry, 'Our Nay is blessed and highly favored.' Leah followed up a bit later, sharing what appears to be a text from her to an unnamed recipient, saying, 'This is the month of clout chasers I guess??' On her Story, she annotated the text, crossing out 'chasers' and writing 'demons shall I say.' She also declared the events of the week, 'Mercury retrograde taking out the trash.' Liv Walker Exposes Kenny's 'Chat GPT' Statement Liv also criticized Kenny's statement, sharing it on her Instagram Stories. 'Your pathetic excuse for a story is laughable. I can't even put into words how good of a person Naynay is and how hard it is [to] watch her go through something like this,' she wrote. '@kennyrodriguez I hope this gives you the clout you always wanted you fucking loser.' Liv was so unimpressed by Kenny's statement that she decided to go straight to the source, asking Chat GPT if it thought AI had written Kenny's response. The answer, per her Instagram: 'Yes.' Kaylor Martin Calls Kenny 'A Poor Excuse of a Man' And of course, Kaylor also weighed in, sharing a screenshot of JaNa's response to Kenny and adding, '@kennyrodriguez is a poor excuse of a man. You lost the most beautiful genuine soul. Shame on you.' Kendall Washington Supports JaNa on Instagram Most of the Love Island USA season 6 men have yet to comment publicly, though almost all of them have unfollowed Kenny on Instagram. Kendall, however, showed his support for JaNa on Instagram, sharing a video of the two dancing together with the message, 'Love you forever Nay Nay.' Marla Maples, Donald Trump: About their 'wedding of the year' and who was on the guest list
In 1993, Marla Maples' marriage ceremony was dubbed the "wedding of the year." Two months after welcoming Tiffany Trump, her only child with ex-husband President Donald Trump, in October of that year, Maples and the billionaire were married at the Plaza Hotel in New York City in front of hundreds of guests, politicians, TV personalities and celebrities. The star-studded affair included guests such as Howard Stern, Rosie O'Donnell and model/actress Tawny Kitaen. Donald Trump even made a press event out of signing a wedding license with Maples in a conference hosted by Mayor David Dinkins. Dinkins opened a champagne bottle in celebration as the paparazzi snapped photos. He was invited to the Donald Trump-Marla Maples wedding, too. Reports online are swirling now about whether the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein attended their wedding. On July 22, CNN reported newly uncovered photos and video of Epstein at his former friend's wedding to Maples on Dec. 20, 1993. The couple divorced in 1999, not long after he met model Melania Knauss. It was the second marriage for Donald Trump, who has been married to first lady Melania Trump since 2005, and the only marriage for Maples. Their daughter, Tiffany Trump, welcomed a baby boy with her billionaire husband Michael Boulos just after Mother's Day this year. Alexander Trump Boulos, born at 4:44 a.m. May 15, 2025, is the 11th grandchild for Donald Trump and the first for Maples. Below are photos and video of Marla Maples, Tiffany Trump and the Donald Trump-Marla Maples "wedding of the year." Who is Tiffany Trump? Photos of Tiffany Trump, only daughter of Donald Trump and Marla Maples Tiffany Trump, a 31-year-old former model, married the 27-year-old businessman Boulos in 2022 at Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump's private club and home in Palm Beach, Florida. The couple met in 2018 in Mykonos at Lindsay Lohan's Beach Club, according to People magazine. Unlike her older siblings, Tiffany Trump has largely stayed out of the political arena during her father's nearly 10 years in the spotlight. Since she was born − see video above of her parents leaving the hospital with her as a newborn − Tiffany Trump has been in the spotlight.
