Iran reports deaths of six more generals as Israeli attacks continue
An Iranian protester holds up a poster of Mohammad Bagheri, the chief of staff of Iran's armed forces, who was killed in an Israeli strike. Photo: AP TEHRAN: Iran's Revolutionary Guards on Sunday (June 15) announced the deaths of six additional generals, raising the total number of senior officers killed in Israel's military campaign to at least 14. Among the dead are prominent figures such as Revolutionary Guards commander-in-chief Hossein Salami and chief of staff Mohammad Bagheri. The casualties come amid three days of Israeli airstrikes targeting a range of Iranian sites, including nuclear facilities, military leaders, defence installations, cities and oil sites. Iran has condemned the strikes as a declaration of war, responding with hundreds of missile and drone attacks on Israeli territory. A funeral for Salami, Bagheri and other fallen commanders is expected to be held Tuesday, according to the Tasnim news agency, a media outlet closely aligned with the Revolutionary Guard Corps. - dpa

Germany boosts protection of Israeli, Jewish sites against Iran
BERLIN: Germany said Sunday it is reinforcing security around Israeli and Jewish sites on its territory against possible reprisal attacks by Iran, locked in a conflict with Israel. 'We are also preparing ourselves in Germany in case Iran targets Israeli or Jewish institutions,' Chancellor Friedrich Merz said before flying out to attend a G7 summit in Canada. France has already ordered similar measures on its territory because of the Israel-Iran conflict, which on Sunday was in its third day. Merz said Israel has a right to defend itself from the 'existential threat' posed by Iran's 'military nuclear programme', and reiterated his country's stance that Tehran must never develop atomic weapons. Israel on Friday launched surprise air attacks on Iran's nuclear sites, nuclear scientists and top military commanders. Iran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks on Israel, and both sides on Sunday were continuing strikes on each other. Military and residential buildings in both countries have been hit, according to local media. Israel has expanded its operation to also hit a major Iranian natural gas facility in the south and two fuel depots near Tehran. Merz said 'there should be no regional enlargement of the conflict' and called on Iran to cease hitting civilian targets in Israel. He added that the conflict would figure at the top of the G7 agenda. In Iran, at least 128 people have been killed, according to media, and 900 wounded, according to the health ministry, cited by the Etemad daily. In Israel, 13 people have been killed, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, and more than 200 wounded, according to first responders.

Netanyahu says Iran will pay ‘very heavy price' for Israeli civilian deaths
JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that Iran would pay 'a very heavy price' for killing Israeli civilians, as the two foes kept up intense fighting. 'Iran will pay a very heavy price for the premeditated murder of civilians, women and children,' Netanyahu said during a visit to the site of a missile strike on a residential building in the coastal city of Bat Yam, near Tel Aviv. Iran's missile attacks on Israel Saturday night and early Sunday killed 10 people and wounded more than 200, according to first responders, bringing the total number of fatalities from Iranian strikes to 13. Missiles that broke through Israel's air defence system also caused damage and destruction in several areas, including Bat Yam, Tel Aviv and in the country's north. Israel's military censorship forbade journalists from sharing footage or the exact locations of missile hits inside the country. 'Israel absolutely had to carry out this operation,' Netanyahu said in reference to the waves of strikes carried out across Iran on military and nuclear sites since Friday morning. The operation, dubbed 'Rising Lion', officially aims to keep Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, and has hit more than 250 targets, according to Israel's military. 'We will reach all our objectives and we will eliminate the double existential threat,' Netanyahu added, referring to Iran's nuclear programme and its ballistic missile capabilities.
