Arsenal player ratings vs Villarreal: Viktor Gyokeres shows signs of promise despite losing in first start
The visitor went 2-0 up through former Gunners winger Nicolas Pepe and Karl Etta Eyong, but Christian Norgaard pulled a goal back before half-time.
Arsenal controlled a lot of the possession, however they were hit on the counter as Arnaut Danjuma restored Villarreal's two-goal lead.
Martin Odegaard reduced the deficit by scoring a penalty, which was won by Max Dowman, but Villarreal held on to claim a 3-2 win.David Raya 6
Will be disappointed with the two goals he conceded as Villarreal players were allowed to poke home rebounds.
Ben White 6
Started for the fourth game in a row in pre-season and looks sharp. Overlapped a few times and caused problems.
William Saliba 7
Solid as ever and Arsenal's best defender in the game. The defence has looked suspect at times in pre-season, but the Frenchman has still performed well.
Jakub Kiwior 5
Shaky at times and was brushed off too easily by Pepe for the opening goal. Struggled with Villarreal's pace on the break.
Myles Lewis-Skelly 6
Played much more centrally in the second half and involvement in the game grew. Still looks to be getting up to speed.
Ethan Nwaneri 7
One of Arsenal's better players in the first half and looked bright whenever he got on the ball.
Christian Norgaard 7
Got on the scoresheet by heading home at the back post from a corner. Broke up the play well during a solid performance.
Mikel Merino 6
Neat and tidy, but nothing spectacular. Created a decent opening for Gyokeres with a good through-ball.
Bukayo Saka 6
Drew a save in the first half after a run and cut in from the right. Linked up nicely with White at times.
Viktor Gyokeres 6
Handed his first start and was quiet. Will take time to get on the same wavelength as his new team-mates, as more than once he made runs and wasn't found.
Gabriel Martinelli 5
Has not got going in pre-season and this was another frustrating performance. Assisted Norgaard's goal with a corner, but in open play his final ball was lacking.
Substitutions
Martin Zubimendi (Norgaard 46') 7
Looks like such a classy player. Played some great passes and oozed composure.
Cristhian Mosquera (White 46') 6
Spent 15 minutes at right-back before moving to the heart of defence.
Martin Odegaard (Gyokeres 63') 7
Slotted his penalty by sending the goalkeeper the wrong way. Helped lift the tempo and combined well with Dowman.
Max Dowman (Saka 63') 7
Just ridiculous that he is 15. Looked really bright and won a penalty with a deft flick.
Kepa Arrizabalaga (Raya 63') 6
Arguably should have come off his line to close down Danjuma for his goal, but it was a good finish.
Jurrien Timber (Saliba 63') 6
Made his first appearance since May and did okay considering the lack of game time.
Gabriel (Kiwior 63') 6
Understandably rusty after months out of action. Got some valuable minutes under his belt.
Declan Rice (Nwaneri 63') 6
Added some athleticism to the midfield as Arsenal chased down a late equaliser.
Noni Madueke (Martinelli 77') N/A
Oleksandr Zinchenko (Lewis-Skelly 77') N/A
Subs not used: Setford, Lokonga, Harriman-Annous

📈 Is it the manager's touch? Nenê's stats after 40 are remarkable
How does someone play so much after 40? Nenê is the answer. Since turning 40 on July 19, 2021, the midfielder has played 162 games, scored 28 goals, and made 30 assists. In total, there are 58 direct goal participations. The spectacular numbers were "boosted" on Monday (11), when Nenê provided the assist for Matheus Babi's goal, which defined Juventude's 2-1 victory over Corinthians. The veteran shows that age is just a number. Even in the final stretch of his career, he continues to be decisive on the field, with an average of almost one goal participation every three games. It's rare to see a player maintain this level after 40. With so much regularity and intelligence, Nenê has become an example of longevity in Brazilian football. 👉 Coach's touch? How to end a winning drought? With experience and efficiency. In coach Thiago Carpini's return, Juventude won after four games without triumphs in the 2025 Brazilian Championship. And the protagonists of the relief came from the bench. Nenê provided the assist, and Matheus Babi scored the winning goal. All in less than two minutes after entering the field in the second half. The play was quick, but it was worth a lot. Juventude rediscovered the path to victories and gained confidence under the command of the new (old) coach. The data is from . Detroit City FC unveils renderings, name of new stadium in Corktown
The Detroit City Football Club on Monday revealed the name and renderings of a new stadium in Southwest Detroit that will be the team's home beginning in the 2027 season. The AlumniFi Field will be a 15,000-seat stadium at the corner of Michigan Avenue and 20th Street. Construction is expected to begin in late 2025 pending public approval, according to a news release. AlumniFi, a digital banking platform that was created by MSU Federal Credit Union, is expanding its partnership with DCFC as the stadium's naming rights partner. "As longtime residents of the city, the leaders and founders of the Club view this stadium not only as an opportunity for our organization and sport, but as a civic endeavor to give back to the city we love," said DCFC CEO Sean Mann in a statement. "Through our partnership, AlumniFi has been working with us on a shared vision for a stronger, more connected Detroit, creating an environment where everyone from youth to adults can thrive." DCFC announced in 2024 that it would be building a soccer-specific stadium and acquired the site of the old Southwest Detroit Hospital. Southwest Detroit Hospital opened in 1973, was closed in 1991, and declared bankruptcy. The building has been abandoned for 18 years. The club was founded in 2012 and has been playing at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck since 2016. It previously played at Cass Tech High School. "Like Detroit City Football Club, we believe in the power of community," AlumniFi President and CEO April Clobes said in a statement. "This partnership is about more than a stadium — it's a commitment toward a brighter, stronger Detroit. Through financial education, local initiatives, and community-driven programs, AlumniFi is here to support Detroit's continued growth and success." Saelemaekers on ‘different feeling' with Modric and new Leao role
Alexis Saelemaekers could 'feel something different' from the first Milan training session with Luka Modric and believes Rafael Leao's new role is 'amazing.' The Rossoneri had some ups and downs in pre-season, but while the 4-1 defeat to Chelsea was a setback when down to 10 men, it did mark the debut of star signing Modric. Saelemaekers explained his thoughts on the arrival of the former Real Madrid hero and Ballon d'Or winner. Modric and Leao impressed Saelemaekers LONDON, ENGLAND – AUGUST 10: Luka Modric of AC Milan controls the ball during the pre-season friendly match between Chelsea and AC Milan at Stamford Bridge on August 10, 2025 in London, England. (Photo by) 'From the first training session, he is a player that you really feel he has something different and we are really happy to have him with us,' the Belgian told The Italian Football Podcast. 'We hope he is going to do good things with us and we will help him as much as we can to make him shine on the field.' Along with the introduction of Modric, new coach Max Allegri has also changed the position for Rafael Leao. The Portuguese talent has gone from winger to centre-forward and had some impressive performances over the summer. 'The coach has to decide what is his best position but I think that he played amazing in this position in pre-season, in every game he played,' added Saelemaekers. 'He is a very important player for us and, just like with Luka Modric, we will work hard for him to make him shine on the field. I hope he will have an incredible season.'
