MIRI (May 19): The 'Konsert MeleTOP TVS' lit up the Miri Indoor Stadium on Saturday night with a vibrant showcase of music and culture, drawing a crowd of over 2,000 eager fans.
The concert marked the inaugural collaboration between Astro's MeleTOP and TVS (TV Sarawak) and was held for the first time in Sarawak.
Themed 'Nang Champiyen, Nang Lagend' (Truly Champions, Truly Legends), the show delivered a show-stopping mix of performances that celebrate Bornean artistry while uniting talents from across the country.
The concert was hosted by a dynamic lineup comprising Nabil Ahmad, Sherry Alhadad, Cheryl Toh, Fattah Bohl and Ghaz Zawaiwi, and their lively banter kept the energy high between performances.
According to TVS acting chief executive officer Mohamad Sardon Zainal, the concert served to introduce TVS Channel 122 to a wider national audience and highlight homegrown talent from across Malaysia.
'TVS is committed to continuously uplifting local artistes, and this concert has become an important platform towards that goal,' he told the media after the show.
Floor 88 puts on a fiery performance during the Konsert MeleTOP TVS.
He also announced that Sarawak's own Dayang Nurfaizah was honoured with the 'Anugerah Khas Borneo' in recognition of her two decade-long contribution to the local music industry.
'This award is a symbol of our ongoing support for Bornean talents who have brought pride to the state on the national stage.'
Explaining the choice of Miri as the host city, Sardon noted its strategic location in northern Sarawak.
'This is the first time a large-scale concert like this has been held in Miri, and the enthusiastic response proves there's great potential for organising major entertainment events outside of the capital cities,' he stated.
He added that the concert's success opens doors for future solo concerts and bigger plans for the local creative scene.
'This concert is not just a milestone, but the beginning of a broader effort to strengthen the local entertainment ecosystem. We are also planning another major concert in Kuching this October to mark TVS's fifth anniversary,' he said.
The hosts, together with singer Noki, hype up the show.
A stellar lineup of artistes dazzled the concert, including Sada Borneo, Mimy Fly, Stacy, Wani Kayrie, Noki, Hairee Francis, Hael Husaini, Nadeera, Dayang Nurfaizah, Marsha Milan, Dolla, and Floor 88.
The event was broadcast live on multiple platforms including TVS (Astro Channel 122, MYTV, and UnifiTV), Astro ONE, and Sooka, with a repeat telecast on Astro Ria on May 25 at 9pm. concert entertainment Konsert MeleTOP TVS lead Mohamad Sardon Zainal TVS

Singer Dayang Nurfaizah tight-lipped on engagement rumours

Dayang Nurfaizah will be staging two concerts soon: one in Penang on Aug 23 and another at Menara Kuala Lumpur on Sept 27. Photo: Dayang Nurfaizah/Instagram Malaysian singer Dayang Nurfaizah is choosing to keep her personal life private amid growing rumours that she is engaged and preparing to walk down the aisle soon. The 44-year-old singer, whose full name is Dayang Nurfaizah Awang Dowty, denied that any date has been set for a wedding ceremony despite the ongoing speculation. For now, she said her focus remained on her music career, specifically two exclusive concerts under the Janji With Dayang banner, set to take place in Penang on Aug 23 and at Menara Kuala Lumpur on Sept 27. 'The only dates I'm focused on are for my exclusive shows, because I haven't released a full album in a long time. The last one was in 2017, so this is something very special,' she said at a press conference on Monday. When asked about the possibility of marriage, the singer replied with a smile and said 'Pray for the best for me.' Previously, Dayang was rumoured to be romantically linked to popular singer and composer Hael Husaini, with social media speculating that the two were secretly engaged. However, Hael had publicly denied the claims. On her upcoming shows, the Sarawak-born singer said she intentionally chose to stage mid-scale performances to create a more personal and intimate experience for fans. She also expressed gratitude for the strong support, as tickets for both shows sold out quickly. – Sinar Daily

Nest of memories and heritage

THE vast depths of the Niah Caves form a stunning backdrop to a new short film from Sarawak about a father and daughter and their community's tradition of bird's nest harvesting. Written and directed by Sarawakian filmmaker Danish Busmah, Space Between not only showcases Niah's natural beauty but explores a father's relationship with his young daughter as they navigate the weight of heritage and unspoken love between them. It's a story inspired by local culture and heritage, something that Danish hopes fellow filmmakers will explore in their work. ''Space Between is more than just a short film, it is a deeply personal story about a daughter, her father and the silent weight of memory, grief and love. 'Space Between' was shot on location in the Niah Caves. — Photo courtesy of 21 Ways Film 'But behind the fiction lies something real: our collective desire as Sarawakians to tell the stories that matter, stories that come from our heritage and lived experiences,' he said at the film's premiere screening in Kuching ahead of its release on TVS on June 15 in conjunction with Father's Day. Featuring local actors Julai Billie and Darweesha Dasuki as the father and daughter, Space Between was filmed on location at Niah National Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site. Danish said the 12-minute film is likely the first to be shot in the heart of the Niah Caves. 'The caves and the surrounding area are home to the generational tradition of bird's nest harvesting. The movie showcases the natural beauty of the Niah Caves. — Photos by ZULAZHAR SHEBLEE/The Star 'It is this world and this legacy that inspired the emotional core of this short film.' The story also has a personal connection for him, as his father comes from Kampung Lobang Batu, Serian, which has a similar tradition of collecting bird's nests. 'That's where I got the inspiration for the story. Then we expanded it to Niah, because we feel the grandeur of the location is very understated and we really wanted to emphasise the beauty that we have.' Produced by 21 Ways Film, a Sarawakian production house, Space Between was supported by the Sarawak heritage, arts and culture facilitation fund in collaboration with TVS. Danish said the film is proof that Sarawakian stories are worth telling, not only for a local audience but for global viewers. Local actors Julai (right) and Darweesha (centre) played the father and daughter in 'Space Between', directed by Danish (left). With plans to submit Space Between to international film festivals by next year, he hoped its story will go beyond Sarawak's shores while remaining rooted in local culture and traditions. 'I truly believe this is only the beginning for all of us. We look forward to seeing more of our voices and vision taking the stage,' he said.
