Tai Ahoms protest delay in ST status, threaten BJP boycott in 2026 polls
2
Dibrugarh: Hundreds of members of the Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, Assam (TAYPA) took to the streets in Dibrugarh on Monday, demanding the immediate grant of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Tai Ahom community.
The protestors, carrying placards and banners, marched to the district commissioner's office, raising slogans against the Central govt for the prolonged delay in fulfilling their long-standing demand.
TAYPA president Diganta Tamuli, leading the demonstration, expressed deep frustration over the govt dilly-dallying over the ST issue and issued a stark warning to the ruling BJP ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
"For over a decade, we have been waiting for the BJP to honour its promise. The Tai Ahom community will not tolerate this betrayal any longer. If our demand is not met soon, the Tai Ahoms will boycott the BJP en masse in the 2026 Assembly elections," Tamuli said.
Tamuli's warning carries substantial political weight, given the Tai Ahom community's numerical strength and historical influence in Assam's electoral landscape.

The community's support has been crucial for the BJP's electoral success in the state.
"The Tai Ahoms are a significant voting bloc in the state, and their support can make a difference in the upcoming elections. If the BJP government continues to ignore us, they will face the consequences in 2026," the TAYPA president added.
The roots of the current agitation trace back to 2014, when the BJP promised ST status to six ethnic communities during the Lok Sabha election campaign.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself had assured the communities of ST recognition during his campaign rallies in Assam. However, more than a decade later, the promise remains unfulfilled, leading to mounting frustration among the affected communities. The ST demand encompasses six ethnic groups currently classified as Other Backward Classes (OBC): the Tai Ahoms, Mottocks, Koch Rajbongshis, Sooteas, Morans, and Tea Tribes.
These communities argue that ST status would provide them with better access to educational opportunities, government employment, and political representation through enhanced reservation benefits.
Monday's demonstration concluded with TAYPA leaders submitting a detailed memorandum to Dibrugarh District Commissioner Bikram Kairi, addressed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The memorandum urged immediate action on their long-standing demand.

‘Tiranga scam': AAP MP says BJP insulted sacrifice of martyrs
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh on Tuesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Delhi government of 'Tiranga Scam', where they allegedly distributed 700,000 Tricolour flags in the capital during the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, but significantly smaller than the mandated size. AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh during a press conference at the party office in New Delhi on Tuesday. (ANI) 'By committing this Tiranga scam, BJP has insulted the sacrifice of lakhs of martyrs; those responsible must be arrested and jailed,' Singh said in a press conference on Tuesday. The AAP leader displayed documents alleging flags measuring 711mm x 508mm were supplied instead of the required 900mm x 1350mm, with poles shortened from six to four feet. The BJP, meanwhile, said the claims are 'false' and called their campaign 'transparent'. Singh alleged that the tender opened a day after Independence Day, yet substandard flags costing ₹15 instead of the approved ₹60, had already been supplied. Senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia wrote on X , 'Politics on Tricolour, business on the Tricolour and now scam on it, such scammers should be prosecuted for treason.' In response, BJP Delhi spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said, 'AAP leaders, especially Sanjay Singh, are long-time peddlers of lies. People of Delhi have not forgotten the propaganda scam under the name of the Tiranga campaign by the Kejriwal government in 2022. If Sanjay Singh has the courage, he should respond to these accusations.' The BJP spokesperson further stated that for the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, Delhi government procured flags through a full tender process, strictly following rules, and the purchase was done via a government portal.

UP: Lawyer gets life term for lodging false cases under SC/ST Act
The court of special judge SC/ST Act here on Tuesday awarded life sentence to advocate Permanand Gupta for lodging false cases of rape under the SC/ST Act with the help of his woman associate who belonged to the Schedule Caste category. Additional district judge Vivekanand Sharan Tripathi, who is special judge SC/ST court, passed the order. (For Representation) Additional district judge Vivekanand Sharan Tripathi, who is special judge SC/ST court, passed the order. Both Permanand Gupta and his associate Pooja Rawat are already in jail for the past one month. The court, however, ordered the release of Pooja Rawat as she apprised the court that Gupta misled and used her in lodging fake cases against his neighbour Arvind Yadav and Awadhesh Yadav. Gupta and the Yadav family are residents of Vibhuti Khand in Gomti Nagar. Permanand Gupta had a property dispute with his neighbours Arvind Yadav and Awadhesh Yadav. Gupta's wife Sangeeta used to run a beauty parlour where she employed Pooja Rawat. Originally a resident of Gorakhpur district, Pooja came to Lucknow in search of a job. Gupta misled Pooja to lodge fake FIRs of rape and sexual harassment under the SC/ST Act against his neighbours. The incidents were reported between March 1, 2024 and July 24, 2024. However, during investigation by the Vibhuti Khand police, all allegations levelled by Pooja Rawat were found to be fake. Government advocate Arvind Mishra, who represented the state government in court, said Rawat had previously lodged 11 similar FIRs, making the current FIR her 12th complaint, all filed through advocate Gupta. The court noted that Rawat and her counsel were colluding to lodge false FIRs to create pressure on multiple people, aiming to extort money. 'The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court has already directed the CBI to investigate the matter and submit its report,' Mishra said. Pooja Rawat and Parmanand Gupta are accused of filing false cases under the SC/ST Act against several individuals including Arvind Yadav, Avdhesh Yadav, Ram Lakhan Yadav, Ram Ujagar Yadav, Lal Ji Yadav, Jitendra Yadav, and Mohit Yadav. Gupta used to dictate statements to Rawat during investigations, Mishra said. 'The case highlights the need for accountability in legal filings and the importance of safeguarding individuals from false accusations. The court's decision sets a strong precedent against the misuse of legal provisions for personal gains,' said advocate Manoj Tripathi, former district government counsel.

A step closer to gig workers' safety, onus on aggregators
Bengaluru: The legislative assembly Tuesday passed the Karnataka Platform-Based Gig Workers (Social Security and Welfare) Bill, 2025, placing obligations on aggregators to provide social security benefits, including occupational health and safety, to gig workers. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Proposing to establish the gig welfare fund on the lines of the fund for construction workers, the govt had earlier promulgated an ordinance on April 11, with governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot giving assent on May 27. The Bill now replaces the ordinance and envisages the creation of a Gig Workers Welfare Board to manage the fund and extend welfare measures. Opposition members, including CN Ashwath Narayan, suggested the govt also contribute to the fund along with aggregators. In response, labour minister Santosh Lad, who tabled the bill, said such suggestions would be considered while framing rules for legislation. However, to a proposal from BJP's Suresh Kumar to bring outsourced employees under the bill, Lad said: "They can't be included as they do not fit the definition of gig workers. " Lad explained that the contribution of aggregators to the fund would be determined by the Board. The bill allows aggregators to collect 1% to 5% of a gig workers' welfare fee from customers, which must be deposited into the fund at the end of each quarter. "The legislation ensures social security for gig workers. It is the need of the hour considering the rapid emergence of the gig economy," Lad said. "A NITI Aayog report says by 2029-30, about 23.5 million people will be employed as gig workers, creating many opportunities in this sector. There are about 4 lakh gig workers in Karnataka." Key provisions of the bill include a dispute resolution mechanism, registration of gig workers and aggregators with the Board, and measures to provide reasonable job security and health safety. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Board will comprise four representatives from gig workers' associations, representatives of aggregators, and two from civil society. It will also have powers to enter into agreements between gig workers and aggregators to prevent indiscriminate termination. Gig workers may also file complaints against aggregators before the Board, and in case of injustice, appeal before an Internal Dispute Committee even against the Board itself. Highlighting challenges workers face, Lad said: "Gig workers, especially two-wheeler riders, are constantly exposed to noise and environmental pollution. Some work 18 hours to earn Rs 1,800, taking on 25 to 30 delivery tasks a day. They face severe health hazards which is why this bill has been introduced." Who is a gig worker? The bill defines gig workers as those engaged through online platforms for services such as food and grocery delivery, logistics, e-market operations, health services, travel and hospitality besides others. It states that a gig worker is a person who performs or participates in a work arrangement, is paid a fee as per terms of a contract, and whose work is sourced through a platform in the services specified in the schedule.
