Minnesota murders: Melissa Hortman's dog died in the frenzied shooting by Vance Luther Boelter.
In a shocking revelation, it has now come to light that the Minnesota murders suspect Vance not only killed Democratic former House speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, he also gunned down the family's beloved rescue dog, Gilbert, in the unhinged shooting spree.
And Hortman's children had to put down Gilbert the first thing after they learned about their parents' murder. Erin Koegel, a member of the Minnesota House since 2017, said one of the first things Hortman's children had to do after the shooting was 'put down [Gilbert] after learning their parents had been murdered,' she posted on X.
Gilbert was a rescue dog and Hotman adopted the Golden Retriever from the local dog shelter called Helping Paws.
Hortman had been a foster home trainer there.
'Gilbert wasn't going to survive. Melissa loved that dog. She trained him as a service dog. He flunked out of school and she was so happy he failed so he could stay! She needed him in heaven with her," Koegel wrote.
'This morning, we learned of the tragic and senseless death of former Speaker of the House Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. Melissa served her community in more ways than one.

She was a Helping Paws Foster Home Trainer, a neighbor, and a friend. The Hortman family raised and trained Minnie, who is now a working service dog partnered with a Veteran. They also helped raise and train Gilbert, a service dog in training who was eventually career changed and became a cherished member of their family.
At this time, we do not have confirmed information about Gilbert's condition," Helping Paws posted a tribute to Hortman on Facebook before Gilbert died.
The massive manhunt for Boelter ended on Sunday night when Boelter was found in a wooded area near his home and he surrendered to the police. Boelter has been charged with multiple counts of murder after authorities took him into custody.

Cops launch statewide drive to prevent crimes during Rath Yatra in Puri

1 2 Bhubaneswar: Odisha police on Monday launched a statewide crackdown against criminals to ensure the Rath Yatra in Puri on June 27 passes off peacefully. The operation, while primarily focused on Puri, would extend across the state to foil potential plans of outside criminals during the festival that will draw lakhs of tourists, including VIPs from the country and abroad. "We directed DCPs of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, and SPs of all districts to launch the special anti-criminal drive from Sunday evening. They have been instructed to remain particularly vigilant about criminals from outside Puri and Odisha who might attempt to target the massive gathering," DGP Y B Khurania told TOI. The DGP said the coordinated statewide crackdown aims to ensure a peaceful and secure environment for all visitors during Rath Yatra. "Safety and security of pilgrims is our utmost responsibility. State police headquarters will monitor the implementation of the enforcement drive, whose main objective is to help maintain peace, and law and order across the state in general and Puri in particular during the festival," Khurania said. The security measures include intensified patrolling, verification drives in hotels, and monitoring of known criminal hideouts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Special attention is being paid to areas surrounding the Jagannath Temple and Grand Road, where the main festival activities will take place. Police officers said the operation involves multiple police units, including special task forces and intelligence teams. Police are also implementing advanced surveillance systems and deploying additional personnel to manage the arrival of domestic and international visitors. Police sources said the special drive's focus is to prevent property offences like theft, burglary, robbery and snatching. All police stations have been asked to execute pending non-bailable warrants (NBWs) and arrest offenders on the run in several cases. Besides, police officers have been asked to secure bond of good conduct from habitual offenders, who would pledge not to indulge in any criminal activities during the festival. The DGP highlighted that AI-enabled CCTV systems being installed throughout Puri would assist in crime prevention. While AI cameras were used during last year's Rath Yatra, this year's deployment is more extensive. "We are in the process of installing 300 advanced cameras equipped with AI technology for security, crowd control and traffic management," Khurania said. SP (Puri) Vinit Agrawal said, "Given the possible participation of VIPs, including Union ministers and chief ministers of several NDA-ruled states, we are leaving no stone unturned in our security arrangements."

Rajya Sabha MP from Assam quizzed in connection with funds ‘embezzlement'

1 2 3 Guwahati: Rajya Sabha MP from Assam Ajit Kumar Bhuyan was questioned by the Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell on Monday for about five hours in connection with a case of embezzlement of MP funds meant for local area development. On questioning the MP by the vigilance cell, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters on Monday that he respects the MP but defended the inquiry. "I respect him but the road project that he recommended does not exist," he said. "These people carry a very good face value in front of the public. In this case, only his statement was pending. After this, the report will be submitted to the court. Many ACS officers have already been terminated from service after being found guilty in the case," the CM said. Four ACS officers — Munindra Bordoloi, Sharmistha Bora, Sukanya Bora and Hemant Kumar Dutta — were also booked for their alleged involvement in the case. The case was registered against the MP in April 2023 under charges of criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust by a public servant, disappearing evidence of offence or giving false information to screen an offender, cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property, and forgery under the IPC. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Charges of taking undue advantage to influence public servants by corrupt or illegal means and criminal misconduct by a public servant of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, were also slapped on the accused. Ahead of appearing before the investigating officer, Bhuyan told the media that he was surprised by the summons in the case related to the misappropriation of funds under his MPLAD Scheme for 2021-22 and 2022-23. He said, "It is a known fact that an MP only recommends a scheme, but the financial part and implementation of the project is done by the district commissioner. He authorises an official to look after it." Bhuyan, who is also the president of opposition bloc Asom Sonmilito Morcha (ASOM), said he posted a few questions in 2022 regarding alleged misuse of funds by the chief minister but did not get any answer. Sources said enough evidence was found against the accused during the preliminary enquiry conducted by the cell on the complaint of embezzlement of MP funds meant for the construction of roads. As per allegations, an amount of Rs 48 lakh was embezzled by the MP. The investigation was initiated following media reports in February 2023, which alleged widespread corruption and misappropriation of MPLAD funds during 2021–22 and 2022–23.

...HC reserves its order on petitions seeking stay on Batla House demolitions

New Delhi: Delhi High Court on Monday reserved its order on petitions seeking a stay on the demolitions in the Batla House area. Justice Tejas Karia wrapped up proceedings after hearing the arguments of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the individual petitioners who sought interim relief and protection. HC was dealing with several petitioners, including affected residents Heena Parveen, Jinat Kausar, Rukhsana Begam, and Nihal Fatima. Appearing for them, advocates Anurag Saksena and Sonica Ghosh urged the court to intervene and argued that the DDA issued a generic notice when there is no clear demarcation of properties that fall in the particular Khasra number under scrutiny for alleged illegal constructions. The counsels maintained that not all properties in the Khasra are illegal and sought time from the court to produce the necessary documents. The petitioners submitted they purchased the property from a builder and were residents of the area since 1980-82. They are in the process of obtaining the documents, which are in Urdu and Farsi and require translation. Opposing the plea, counsel for the DDA maintained that the properties are illegal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The counsel argued that the DDA is taking action following directions from the Supreme Court and gave time to the residents to furnish documents, but they failed to do so. The agency added that the land is illegally occupied as the encroachers failed to show title documents. Last week, in separate proceedings, HC stayed the proposed demolition of 11 properties in the same area after individual residents challenged the notices issued by the DDA. The petitioners argued that nine properties were outside the Khasra identified by the DDA yet were being targeted, while two premises fell within the Khasra number but are protected under the PM Uday Scheme. It was also contended that before taking action, the DDA didn't hear them. On June 11, the matter relating to demolitions by DDA in the area had reached HC in the form of a PIL but the court refused to grant any relief to AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan, saying that a general order of protection in a PIL of this sort was likely to jeopardise the case of individual litigants. The Supreme Court on May 7 ordered the DDA to demolish unauthorised structures in Khasra number 279, which is estimated to be around 2.8 bigha or 0.702 hectare along Muradi Road in Okhla village. |
