Hilal become dual champions after triumph in war-torn Sudan - Africa
To escape a war that has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions, according to the United Nations, Hilal and Merrikh competed in the Mauritanian championship, finishing first and sixth.
However, Confederation of African Football rules state that only national champions can enter the CAF Champions League, forcing the two clubs to return home and play in army-controlled northeast venues.
The national army have recaptured the capital, Khartoum, after two years of occupation by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, but fighting rages in other parts of the east African nation.
Here, AFP Sport brings news from around the continent, including a personal triumph for Brazilian forward Lucas Ribeiro from South African club Mamelodi Sundowns.
Sudan
Hilal hammered greatest domestic rivals Merrikh after building a three-goal lead by half-time to be crowned Sudanese champions a record-extending 31st time.
Hilal (plus 11) won the title on goal difference from Al Ahly Madani (plus 6) after both sides secured 14 points in the eight-club mini-league.
Snatching the title means Hilal will extend a remarkable record of competing in the Champions League every season since 2004 while Madani will represent Sudan in the competition for the first time.
South Africa
The goal Ribeiro scored for South African champions Sundowns against Borussia Dortmund has been voted the best of the 2025 Club World Cup in a FIFA online poll.
Securing possession in midfield, the 26-year-old used pace and footwork to burst through the defence before calmly shooting past goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
Unfortunately for Sundowns, the first goal of the group match in the 11th minute triggered an immediate response from the German outfit, who scored four times before finishing 4-3 winners.
Tanzania
Simba captain Mohammed Husseini will not have his contract renewed by Simba after 12 years at a club who have dominated Tanzanian football for decades with Dar es Salaam neighbours Young Africans.
The 28-year-old left-back joined Simba from Kagera Sugar in 2014 and has been a first choice since under various coaches, including current incumbent, South African Fadlu Davids.
Simba were runners-up in the CAF Confederation Cup and Tanzanian Premier League last season and suffered a surprise semi-finals loss to Singida Black Stars in the Tanzanian FA Cup.
Ghana
Abdul-Karim Zito has been elevated from caretaker to head coach of Asante Kotoko, a Ghanaian club seeking to become giants again in the west African nation.
The two-time African champions came third in the league last season behind first-time title-holders Bibiani Gold Stars, then beat Golden Kick with an added-time goal to win the Ghana FA Cup.
Lifting the cup qualified Kotoko for the CAF Confederation Cup, the second-tier African competition where Zito exceeded expectations in 2024 by taking another Ghanaian club, Dreams, to the semi-finals.
Uganda
Widely travelled Belgian coach Ivan Minnaert has swapped one domestic champion club for another by moving from Fassell of Liberia to Vipers of Uganda.
Monrovia-based Fassell finished 11 points ahead of Heaven Eleven in the Liberian title race to be crowned national champions for the first time.
Vipers, whose home ground lies 25 kilometres (16 miles) from the capital Kampala, won a much tighter Ugandan league chase, securing just two points more than runners-up NEC.

Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu on Monday hosted and splashed gifts on the triumphant national women's soccer team who overcame poor preparations and missing payments to win their record-extending 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations title. The Super Falcons' comeback 3-2 victory over host Morocco in Saturday's thrilling final was applauded by Tinubu and many in Nigeria, a soccer-loving nation where passion and hard work often triumphs over institutional challenges. The continental success, analysts say, papers over the mismanagement of the women's team by the country's authorities. The success of the country had come in spite of the country. 'They have been able to dominate even though the Nigerian soccer authorities do not put as much funding, care, attention, and planning into the way the women's national team is run,' Solace Chukwu, a Lagos-based soccer analyst, told The Associated Press. A difference in treatment The team had been owed match bonuses for years, once resulting in a training boycott in 2022. Even as they triumphed on the way to the finals in Morocco, the backlog of payments was only approved by the president days before Saturday's final. They also could not hold competitive friendly matches and their training kits were said to not have been available. It is a common problem in Nigeria where sporting competitions are often dogged by issues of underfunding, corruption, and mismanagement that have led to high-profile scandals resulting in athletes choosing to represent other countries in protest. Women's teams are affected the most, partly because of how women have always been viewed in the Nigerian society, according to Oluwashina Okeleji, a sport analyst with focus on Africa. 'The argument from the (Nigerian) federation is that the men bring more money than the women, but the truth is the women bring most prestige, honours, and titles to Nigeria,' Okeleji said. A spokesperson for the Nigeria Football Federation, the country's governing soccer body, declined to respond to the allegations. Victims of success The Nigerian women's team has exercised a near-total dominance in African soccer, which is partly credited to a head-start in the women's game. Nigeria created the first soccer league for women in 1978, years before their counterparts on the continent. However, the gains have not catapulted the team to similar achievements on the global stage in what analysts say is a failure of the authorities to capitalize on this early advantage. 'The men's team is huge generally within the administration of Nigerian football as the cash cow,' Chukwu said. The gifts now promised by the president, including money and property, have not convinced the fans. 'This one-time payment and apartment does not make any sense. For what? What they need is investment in the facilities, the staff, and payment. The lack of investment in women's football is one of the reasons why it is not as high quality as the men's,' Funmi Obasa, a football fan in Abuja who follows the women's team, told AP. Pyramids FC sign Brazilian winger Ewerton on four-year deal - Egyptian Football
Egyptian side Pyramids FC have signed Brazilian winger Ewerton Paixão da Silva from Czech club Baník Ostrava on a four-year contract; the club announced on Monday. The 28-year-old becomes the club's first signing of the summer as the African champions prepare for the new season, which kicks off on 9 August against newly promoted side Wadi Degla. Known simply as Ewerton, the winger is expected to fill the void left by Ibrahim Adel, who joined UAE side Al-Jazira earlier this month. Ewerton was previously linked with a move to Egyptian giants Ahly, who showed interest in January, but the deal fell through amid reports that Ostrava had set a $2.5 million price tag for the player. He scored 16 goals and provided seven assists in 34 appearances in all fronts last season. Pyramids FC are coming off a historic campaign in which they won their first CAF Champions League title and finished runners-up in both the Egyptian Premier League and Egypt Cup.
