Blue Jays cut losses on $10.5 million pitcher
Chad Green is no longer with the organization, the Blue Jays announced on Monday.
Green was under a $10.5 million contract that was his last year with Toronto, but the Blue Jays chose not to ride that deal out. They designated him for assignment, and when he cleared waivers as expected, he was released.
After beginning his career with seven seasons with the Yankees (3.17 ERA), Green seemed like a smart pickup for the Blue Jays in 2023.
He was injured most of that season, though, only appearing in 12 games. And in those outings, he had a 5.25 ERA.

Green was back to form in 2024. He had a 3.21 ERA in 53 outings. In 53.1 innings pitched, Green struck out 46 hitters.
That presented optimism about what Green would bring this season.
Instead, his ERA was at 5.56 through 45 outings at the time of his release. Green had still struck out 35 batters in 43.2 innings, and his walk rate was similar, but he was giving up hits and home runs both at the worst rate of his career.
At 34 years old, it's very possible that Green has simply moved well past his prime.

He is an intriguing player to hit the free agent market now, though. His long pedigree of big league success aligns perfectly with a market where every contender is always looking for an extra relief pitcher.
A team that feels it didn't quite get enough bullpen help at the trade deadline can turn to Green and see if he still has a little bit left in the tank.
Toronto clearly deemed that he didn't, and that's why Green became a free agent on Monday, but that status may not last for very long. The Blue Jays will just have to hope he doesn't sign with a team that can hurt their own chances going forward.

It has been a busy offseason for the Denver Nuggets as they have made multiple changes to their roster to chase another championship next season. Of course, the Nuggets have been eliminated in the second round of the playoffs over the last two seasons after winning the title behind Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon in 2023. Denver began the offseason by trading Michael Porter Jr. and a 2032 first-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets for Cameron Johnson as they added a three-point sharpshooter to their lineup and also freed up cap space. With their extra cap space, the Nuggets signed Tim Hardaway Jr. and reunited with Bruce Brown, who played a key role for them during their championship run in 2023, while also landing Jonas Valanciunas from the Sacramento Kings for Dario Saric. With these moves, ESPN's Kevin Pelton gave the Nuggets an A- offseason grade. 'After the dust cleared, Denver's offseason resulted in the strongest Nuggets team on paper since they won the 2023 title, highlighted by swapping Michael Porter Jr. for Cameron Johnson at the cost of a valuable 2032 unprotected first-rounder,' Pelton wrote. Pelton makes a great point about how the Nuggets' roster looks to be the best they have had since their championship season in 2023. Of course, the Nuggets have struggled with their bench unit over the past few seasons but with the additions of Hardaway Jr., Valanciunas and Brown, they clearly made it a priority to upgrade their depth this summer. While that may be the case, they will likely not be bringing back Russell Westbrook who played a key role for them off the bench last season. Because of this, the Nuggets do lack a true backup point guard, though Brown could fill that role next season. With these moves, the Nuggets will now enter next season as a clear contender in the Western Conference with Jokic leading the way as they try to capitalize on another championship. Shohei Ohtani strikes out 8, hits go-ahead HR vs. Cardinals in first start since leaving mound with cramps
Shohei Ohtani returned to the mound Wednesday for the first time since ending a July 30 start early due to cramps. All seems well with the MVP favorite. Ohtani pitched four strong innings against the St. Louis Cardinals. And he hit a two-run home run in the third that gave the Los Angeles Dodgers a 2-1 lead. He did it during a home game in which the Dodgers gave away replicas of his World Series ring. Ohtani needed just 10 pitches to get through the Cardinals side. He reached 100 mph on the radar gun with a third-pitch strike to Alec Burleson that ended the inning. Ohtani pitched another 1-2-3 inning in the second that featured two strikeouts and required just 11 pitches. The third inning required more work from Ohtani and saw the Cardinals crack the scoreboard first. Jordan Walker reached on a leadoff infield pop-up that Miguel Rojas lost in the sun. Walker then stole second base and reached third on a groundout. Brendan Donovan sent him home with a savvy two-out bunt that landed for an RBI single and a 1-0 Cardinals lead. The lead was short-lived. Alex Call led off the bottom of the third with a double for the Dodgers. Two batters later, Ohtani sent him home with a home run deep into the centerfield stands off of Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore. The home run was the 39th of the season for Ohtani, which put him one behind NL leader Kyle Schwarber and three behind MLB home run leader Cal Raleigh. It was also the 1,000th hit of Ohtani's MLB career. And Ohtani's day on the mound wasn't done. He returned for the top of the fourth inning, where he proceeded to strike out the side. Ohtani got each of Burleson, Lars Nootbaar and Masyn Winn out swinging on third-pitch breaking balls to maintain the 2-1 Dodgers lead. The Dodgers added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth for a 3-1 lead, and Ohtani did not return to the mound for the fifth inning as reliever Justin Wrobleski took over. Ohtani finished his day on the mound having pitched four innings while allowing two hits, zero walks and one earned run that was the result of a misplay in the field. He struck out eight and lowered his season-long ERA to 2.37. Ohtani was not in line for the win due to the abbreviated start that was part of the continued plan to ramp him back up on the mound from his second Tommy John procedure. Otherwise, everything from his performance up to his exit on the mound encapsulated why Ohtani's a significant favorite to secure his fourth career MVP trophy.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt put the Yankees ahead with a pinch-hit solo homer in the seventh inning and New York ended its five-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday. Goldschmidt went deep off lefty reliever Robert Garcia (1-7), who has now given up homers in his last three appearances. The Yankees (61-54) avoided being swept in Texas for the first time since 2010, and kept the Rangers from moving past them for the American League's third and final wild-card spot.
