Range Rover stuns industry with bold EV redesign revealed in sneak-peek images: 'The upgrades are designed to help [it] stand apart'

Yahoo2 days ago

As more car manufacturers dip their toes in the electric vehicle market, an upcoming electric Range Rover is supposed to hit the market later this year, with incredible upgrades and advancements, as revealed in photos and a video of pre-release vehicles.
An article by Electrek revealed that the company will be releasing its first electric SUV in 2025, as a new take on its Velar SUV with new aesthetics and an 800V platform, as opposed to the more commonly used 400V platform. With the higher voltage platform, you can expect an SUV with an 800V platform to have more power and faster charging, according to DriveElectric.
Furthermore, the upgrades, per the spy shots of the new EV, suggest it will be a bigger, more SUV-like vehicle. "The upgrades are designed to help the Velar stand apart from the Sport and Evoque models. They could also help it compete with others in the segment, like the Porsche Macan Electric," Electrek reported.
The turn toward electric is clear, and the continued release of new vehicles is evidence. Other carmakers, like Chevrolet with the Blazer EV, and Mercedes-Benz with its Vision V concept EV, are staking their claim on the EV market.
With continuous upgrades and, in turn, price drops on used EVs, the time is now to switch to an electric vehicle. While gas-powered cars use dirty fuels, which require continuous maintenance, EVs have no tailpipe pollution and will save you tons of money from not having routine gas or oil changes and higher maintenance costs.
While pushback on the environmental benefits of EVs includes the need for mining materials for their batteries' production, sources say we are digging about 16.5 billion tons of dirty energy sources out of the Earth every year, and would only need to dig up roughly 30 million tons of minerals annually for the clean energy transition. Plus, unlike dirty fuels, the minerals needed for lithium batteries in EVs are reusable.
Solar panels are a phenomenal implementation to further maximize your savings and earth-consciousness while driving your EV. EnergySage is an easy, free resource to help you compare quotes and estimates on solar installation that can save you money on EV charging.
Upon the announcement of the first fully electric Range Rover SUV, 57,000 people were already on the waitlist as of January 2025, according to Electrek.

Innovative company's futuristic camper van could change the way we vacation: 'Just a more efficient way of traveling'

Camping is already one of the most sustainable ways to go on vacation, but designers in the Netherlands have taken things a step further. BBC travel reporter Rob Bell had the opportunity to tour the world's first solar-powered campervan, Stella Vita, created by Solar Team Eindhoven. This campervan is completely powered by solar and able to recharge without the need to plug into EV charging stations, making road trips and adventures truly limitless. Conceptualized in 2020, Stella Vita is a self-sustaining house on wheels, featuring a shower, a toilet, a cooking area, a sleeping area, and a raisable solar roof with extended panels for additional solar surface. "The vehicle generates enough solar energy to drive, shower, watch TV, charge your laptop, and make coffee," the company wrote in a Facebook post about the innovative campervan. As long as it's a nice, sunny day, the car will recharge while you drive or stop to grab coffee or lunch, ensuring you always have enough range to get to where you're going. This constant charging helps overcome the fear that some have that their EV will run out of range on long-distance travel, also known as range anxiety. "So how many kilometers can it go, maximum?" Bell asked. "Roughly, on a sunny day in the Netherlands, it's around 750 kilometers (466 miles)," Bob from the Stella Vita team answered. This is an impressive range, even surpassing that of new electric vans. An electric vehicle's maximum range is determined, in part, by a vehicle's battery health. As an electric vehicle (EV) endures regular wear and tear, the battery loses efficiency, and performance can suffer. If you were to install home solar panels, which of these factors would be your primary motivation? Energy independence Lower power bills Helping the planet No chance I ever go solar Click your choice to see results and speak your mind. Monitoring your battery health can give you a good idea about your vehicle's maximum range, as well as your used EV's projected value. Data on the used EV market found that used EV sales increased 63% from 2023 to 2024, highlighting the consumer desire to find affordable ways to join the clean energy movement. A used EV is not only better for the environment than conventional gas-powered cars due to zero tailpipe pollution, but EVs also provide car owners with savings on routine maintenance and fuel costs. Due to fewer moving parts and an electric engine, EVs do not require traditional oil or other fluid changes, and they do not require fueling up — just recharging. Although they are still mostly conceptual, solar EVs, like the Stella Vita solar campervan, do not need constant plug-ins for recharging, which would make owning an EV even better. But EV owners can still take advantage of the benefits that solar offers. Charging your EV at home with solar is cheaper than using public charging stations or relying on the electric grid. With government incentives available for solar panels, you could enjoy even more savings with EV ownership and installing solar at your home. EnergySage offers a free tool to help homeowners compare quotes from vetted local solar installers, which can save homeowners up to $10,000 on new projects. Solar EVs, like Stella Vita, could change the future of transportation and traveling. "This is even more self-sustainable, even more self-reliant, and just a more efficient way of traveling," the Stella Vita team said. Dutch car sharing firm adds Renault EVs capable of powering local grid

By Anna Hirtenstein and Gilles Guillaume LONDON/PARIS (Reuters) -Dutch car sharing firm MyWheels will plug in the first of 500 grid-connectable Renault EVs to its fleet in the Netherlands this week, expanding the number of vehicles in Europe capable of strengthening the power grid as the technology gains traction. Vehicle-to-grid technology, known as V2G, allows electric vehicles to store power and provide it to the electricity grid at times of peak demand. The technology has been available for several years but only recently became commercially viable after the introduction of smart charging technology and batteries able to sustain intensive usage. The rollout by MyWheels will be the largest V2G car-sharing scheme in Europe and the largest addition of V2G-enabled cars in the region. It follows growing concern about grid stability after a major blackout in Spain and Portugal this year, and sabotage to power supply in southern France during this year's Cannes film festival, which have triggered more interest in a technology that can help balance fluctuating supply and demand, said Kees Koolen, an investor in We Drive Solar, the Dutch producer of the special chargers used in the project. 'It feels like we're at a tipping point,' said Koolen, who estimated that the project in the Dutch city of Utrecht has cost around 100 million euros ($114 million) to develop. The global V2G market was worth $3.4 billion in 2024, according to Global Market Insights, and is expected to grow by 38% annually between 2025 and 2034 to reach $80 billion. The Netherlands is an early adopter of V2G technology due to ambitious plans to electrify its transport and heating systems while also moving to renewables. Japan's Nissan has also recently supplied dozens of V2G-enabled Leaf and Ariya models to France and Spain. MyWheels says 500 of Renault's V2G-compatible cars, including its electric R5, will be on the road by next year. When not driving, the cars will be plugged into We Drive Solar's bidirectional chargers and the scheme's operators will be paid for electricity absorbed and sold to the grid. Grids have become increasingly unstable with growing electrification and as more intermittent renewable energy is fed into the system. 'Our research shows that vehicle-to-grid technology could allow the growing electric vehicle fleet to become a significant asset to the grid, with vast storage potential locked up in electric vehicles,' said Madeleine Brolly, advanced transport analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance. A key challenge ahead will be standardisation across manufacturers, which will be needed for it to be adopted at scale, she added. 2026 Kia Niro EV Review: Expert Insights, Pricing, and Trims

Reviewed by Zach Gale As Kia's EV lineup continues to grow, will there be room for the Niro EV? The current Niro EV is still offered alongside hybrid and plug-in hybrid Niro variants that share the same versatile body. Should the 2026 Kia Niro EV return to the U.S., it's prime competitors will include the Chevrolet Equinox EV, Nissan Leaf, and Tesla Model 3. What's New Few changes are expected for the 2026 Kia Niro, but the 2027 model may have updated styling and upgraded interior tech. The big question is whether the Niro EV will remain in Kia's lineup or if the Kia EV3 (small electric SUV) or EV4 (small electric sedan) will take its place as an affordable electric car. What We Think The Kia Niro EV makes a sensible entry point for those new to electric vehicles, offering solid build quality, a well-organized cabin, and a hatchback design that adds everyday practicality. Its powertrain offers more grunt and polish than either of the other Niro powertrains (though it's not especially torquey like many EVs). The biggest problem with the 2026 Niro EV is that since this model originally debuted, the Chevrolet Equinox EV arrived with more range at a far more affordable price. As for the Kia, it's packed with standard features and sized well for city driving. Limiting appea is its occasionally firm ride, modest performance, and slow charging speed. Though its range is adequate for daily use, the Niro EV struggles to stand out against more affordable and more capable electric options, leaving it without a competitive advantage. A price cut could strengthen the Niro EV's draw, but we're just as curious for the electric model's viability given the incoming arrival of the EV4. As the older model on older architecture, the Niro EV may not be long for this world. MotorTrend Tested The Niro EV's single-motor FWD electric powertrain produces 201 hp and 188 lb-ft of torque. It's enough to accelerate the Niro EV to 60 mph in a MotorTrend-tested 6.5 seconds. That makes it quicker than the Niro PHEV or standard Niro hybrid models. EV Range and Charging Every pre-2026 Niro EV comes equipped with a 64.8-kWh battery, which delivers an estimated driving range of 253 miles. Its maximum charging speed of 85 kW lags behind the faster 150 kW and 350 kW DC fast chargers commonly found at public stations, making recharge times longer than many competitors. Expect these figures to carry over to 2026. To put this another way, the less expensive Chevrolet Equinox EV has a 307-319 mile range depending on trim, and a maximum charge rate of 150 kW. Kia's Newer Electric Cars Should the Niro EV retire, consumers looking for another all-electric Kia will have a good selection to choose from. The brand might be a little more advanced in its EV adoption plans than some other carmakers, already offering the larger EV6 crossover and EV9 three-row SUV and revealing even more are in the pipeline. The next wave of Kia's electric push should include the EV5, a two-row SUV that's like the Sportage of electric crossovers. The EV3 could be the likeliest replacement for the Niro EV, as it's a small two-row ute. However, at this point, it's unclear if the EV3 will arrive in the U.S. The EV4 is a compact entry the U.S. will see in sedan form and, as part of the larger picture, illustrates Kia's drive to legitimize the company's EV prowess. Safety Ratings and Features Although the Niro EV hasn't been safety rated, the 2025 Niro hybrid has been tested by NHTSA. In that government agency's testing, the 2025 Niro only got four stars overall out of a possible five. Driver assists should include two levels of blind-spot monitoring, the available more advanced version delivered with steering intervention. Standard features: Forward and reverse automatic emergency braking Lane keeping A driver focus monitor Automatic high beams Traffic sign monitor Adaptive cruise control Rear parking sensors Self-parking should come with the higher trim level. Technology Look for the Niro EV's dual 10.3-inch screens to return, one for the driver display and the other as an infotainment interface. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay will be standard, as will remote start, a power driver's seat, heated front seats, rear AC vents, and rain-sensing wipers. Six speakers are standard on the base model and an eight-speaker Harman Kardon system comes with the upgrade. Phone-as-key, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, power-folding side mirrors, ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel are also available. Other Electric Cars:
