Stanford Analyzes Worker Preferences For AI

Many of us have internalized this notion that we're soon going to be working side-by-side with robots, or at least AI agents and entities.
So as humans, what do we want these digital colleagues of ours to do?
How does delegation work?
A Stanford study recently went into this where authors surveyed 15,000 workers in over 100 types of jobs, to see what they really thought about AI adoption.
I thought this comment by one of the authors sums up the purpose of the report well:
'As AI systems become increasingly capable, decisions about how to deploy them in the workplace are often driven by what is technically feasible,' writes project leader Yijia Shao, a Ph.D. student in the Stanford computer science department, 'yet workers are the ones most affected by these changes and the ones the economy ultimately relies on.'
In other words, it's the front-line workers who are going to be most affected by these changes, so we might as well hear what they have to say (in addition to doing all kinds of market research.) There's a reason why the suggestion box is a time-tested element of business intelligence. Technology has to be a good fit – it's not something you just implement carelessly, throwing darts at a wall, and then expecting all of the people involved to sign on and go along for the ride. Some Results
In terms of actual study findings, the Stanford people found that a lot of it, as Billy Joel famously sung, comes down to trust: 45% of respondents had doubts about reliability, and a reported 23% were worried about job loss.
As for the types of tasks that workers favored automating, the study provides a helpful visual that shows off various must-haves against certain danger zones of adoption.
Specifically, Stanford researchers split this into a 'green light zone' and a 'red light zone', as well as a 'low priority zone', and an 'opportunities zone' featuring uses that workers might want, but that are not yet technically viable.
Uses in the green light zone include scheduling tasks for tax preparers, quality control reporting, and the interpretation of engineering reports.
Red light uses that workers are wary of include the preparation of meeting agendas for municipal clerks, as well as the task of contacting potential vendors in logistics analysis.
There's also the task of researching hardware or software products, where surveyed computer network support specialists seem to prefer to do this type of work themselves.
I thought it was funny that one item in the low priority zone was 'tracing lost, delayed or misdirected baggage,' a job typically done by ticket agents. It explains a lot for those legions of hapless travelers entering their faraway AirBnBs without so much as a toothbrush.
As for opportunities, it seems that technical writers would like AI to arrange for distribution of material, computer scientists will largely sign off on technology working on operational budgets, and video game designers would like production schedules automated. Why Automate?
I also came across a section of the study where researchers looked at reasons for automation desire on the part of survey respondents.
It seems that over 2500 survey workers want to automate a task because it will free up time for other kinds of work.
About 1500 cited 'repetitive or tedious' tasks that can be automated, and about the same number suggested that automating a particular task would improve the quality of work done.
A lower number suggested automating stressful or mentally draining tasks, or those that are complicated or difficult.
The study also broke down tasks and processes into three control areas, including 'AI agent drives task completion', 'human drives task completion' or 'equal partnership' (and two other gradations). You can see the entire thing here , or listen to one of my favorite podcasts on the subject here .
One of the headline items is a prediction of diminishing needs for analysis or information processing skills. That connects with more of a focus on managerial, interpersonal or coordination job roles. However, how this will shake out is concerning to many workers, and I would suggest that 23% of respondents worrying about job displacement is a wildly low number. Almost anybody anywhere should be worried about job displacement. Regardless of what happens in the long term, many experts are predicting extremely high unemployment in the years to come, as we work out the kinks in the biggest technological transformation of our time.
Anyway, this study brings a lot of useful information to the question – what do we want AI to do for us in enterprise?

5 Quiet Questions To Help Strategic Investors Decide Quickly And Well

Shayne Fitz-Coy is the Co-Founder of Sabot Family Companies, a long-term investment company founded in 2016 in Stanford, California. A few years ago, a banker who I consider a friend pitched me a debt deal with a "guaranteed" 15% return. I thought about it for a minute and then said no. Eighteen months later, I did the same deal—for 15 cents on the dollar. It was awkward getting together for dinner later, but it was a good reminder that clarity and conviction matter more than prediction. After two decades and more than a thousand pitches, I've learned that saying no is a discipline. Business school teaches valuation but not restraint. For me, restraint came from watching a close VC friend ignore his gut. The founder was evasive, the model was unfocused and the pressure was high to get into the deal. But the loss shouldn't be his lesson. The lesson was how easily it could've been avoided. I try to pass early when something feels off. Here's what I listen for in the first five minutes. 1. Do I Trust This Person? This starts before the pitch. • Do they take responsibility? • Are they kind to my assistant? • Do they listen, or do they just talk? • Are they on time and prepared? Strategic growth capital often means a long-term seat at the table. If I wouldn't want to share 10 years of board meetings and retreats with someone, that's enough for me to know to say no. Character flaws don't fade with success; they often expand. Life is too short to work with jerks. 2. Can They Explain What They Do—Simply? I ask for one sentence. If I get five, I start looking for the exits. The best businesses know what they do without hedging or overreach. They don't bury you in jargon that seems like AI hokum. Red flags that emerge immediately: • Multiple unrelated product lines. • Buzzword-heavy explanations. • "Everything to everyone" positioning. • Complex business models requiring lengthy explanations and backstory. I once passed on a software company with solid margins, as I learned they were also building a hardware device platform, a courses business, a social network and something else I can't recall. Too many threads, not enough weave. I think they do software and pool cleaning services in the Southeast now. I'm drawn to vertical SaaS in narrow niches or local service models with real cash flow and modest growth. If that sounds dull, good. Some of the best businesses are. 3. Do They Know What Drives The Business? I don't ask for revenue. I ask: • How many months of cash do you have? • What's your renewal rate? • What would you do with unlimited capital? If they don't know CAC or LTV, I probably can't help. And if I hear "guaranteed return," I move on. If it were guaranteed, they'd borrow from a neighborhood bank. The language around returns tells me everything. That "guaranteed" 15% deal I mentioned before? It wasn't filed with the SEC. It smelled like a junk bond dressed up as a sweetheart deal. 4. Is This A 'Too Hard' Problem? Charlie Munger had a pile for that on his desk. I do too—mentally. Here's what lands there for me: • Creative accounting. • Regulatory moats. • Replicable models. • Business plans that take 10 minutes to explain. I once passed on a company that later tripled. Someone else made that call. I didn't lose sleep. Another founder reclassified expenses to inflate margins. The company tripled in value. Someone else made that money. I slept fine. My 98% rejection rate has produced zero portfolio failures. As I tell my students: It's better to miss a good deal than to do a bad one. I operate on the philosophy that capital preservation trumps capital appreciation every time. 5. Would I Be Proud To Say Yes? This one's quiet. But it matters. • Can this founder handle setbacks with grace? • Is the business model resilient? • Does this opportunity make sense on its own terms? • Will I be comfortable explaining this investment to my other portfolio companies? If the answer is no to any of the above, I thank them and pass, often with a note: Hi [First Name], Thanks for walking me through what you're building. I learned a lot. It's not the right fit for me, but I admire what you're aiming for. Wishing you all the best, Shayne The Case For Patience Most pitches I passed on years ago, I'd still pass on today. The outcome changed. The decision was right. You have to distinguish between decision quality and outcome luck. Patient capital doesn't mean holding longer. It means waiting better. Trust the quiet questions. They're easy to miss, but in my experience, they rarely mislead. Stanford Study Reveals AI's Growing Place In K–12 Classrooms

AI adoption in schools has moved very fast from theory to measurable reality. New data from a Stanford University SCALE study offers one of the clearest looks yet at how K-12 educators are using generative AI in their daily work and what that might mean for the profession. Researchers partnered with SchoolAI, an education technology platform powered by generative AI. They studied usage of SchoolAI among more than 9,000 U.S. teachers during the first months of the 2024–25 school year. The analysis tracked every teacher action on the platform, from logging in to creating lesson plans, quizzes, or student-facing chatbots. Until now, most understanding of AI use in schools has relied on surveys and anecdotal reports. This dataset, drawn from real classroom behavior, shows which tools teachers choose, when they use them, and how their patterns shift over time. Regular Use by More Than 40% of Teachers The study grouped teachers into four engagement categories based on activity during a 90-day period: While attrition was evident, about a third of teachers stopped after their third day. More than 40 percent became Regular or Power Users. That puts the platform's retention above typical benchmarks for software adoption in other sectors, where three-month retention rates often hover around 30 percent. The findings suggest that for a significant proportion of teachers, AI is becoming part of an ongoing workflow rather than a one-time experiment. Peak Use During Weekday Mornings The timing of use reveals how these tools fit into educators' schedules. The vast majority of activity happened during weekday mornings. Evenings and weekends saw little engagement. This pattern indicates AI is being integrated into active teaching time and lesson preparation, rather than used mainly for after-hours planning. For me, an advocate of educators using these tools to gain their free time back, this is greatly encouraging. For developers and school leaders, it underscores the importance of designing tools that deliver value in short windows during the busiest parts of the day. Teacher Support Tools Lead the Way SchoolAI offers three main categories of tools: Teacher productivity tools accounted for 37 percent of usage time, followed by teacher chatbot assistants at 27 percent and student chatbots at 23 percent. Heavier users leaned more heavily on teacher-support features. Among power users, more than half of all time went to Teacher Chatbot Assistants. Regular Users started with more time on student chatbots. By their 15th day on the platform, their usage patterns closely resembled those of power users, allocating nearly 70 percent of time to teacher-support tools. Teacher Perspectives While researching for my new book, The Educators' AI Guide 2026, some educators explicitly mentioned their use of SchoolAI. 'I'm able to create a space (which is like a Chatbot) that is very specific to the content or standard I'm teaching,' said Larisa Black, an Earth Science teacher at South Carolina Connections Academy in Rock Hill. 'Students can use that space to help them after school hours when studying or completing homework. I love that I'm able to see the full conversation and that data helps me to better understand my students' needs.' School leaders are also noting the scale of adoption. 'We've had over 4,000 spaces created for students in the first five months of the school year,' said Tom D'Amico, Director of Education at the Ottawa Catholic School Board in Canada. 'That's a lot of personalized learning that would not have taken place without AI.' Beyond the Numbers While 'days active' and 'time spent' provide useful metrics, researchers caution they do not capture the full value of engagement. Different tools demand different levels of cognitive effort and have varying impacts on student outcomes. Planning a field trip with an AI assistant is not equivalent to creating a student quiz, even if both take the same amount of time. The findings also come at a moment when policy discussions around AI in education are still catching up to practice. With teachers using AI during instructional hours and for core professional tasks, districts may need to address issues such as training, ethical guidelines, and data privacy in a more structured way. The Road Ahead The SCALE Initiative plans to continue tracking usage and to expand its research into how AI impacts student learning directly. The current results already point to three key takeaways for school leaders and policymakers: The data offers a snapshot of a profession in transition. They are experimenting, adapting, and in many cases, finding ways for AI to take on tasks that once consumed valuable teaching time or personal time. As more classrooms adopt these tools, the focus may shift from whether AI belongs in education to how it can best serve teachers and students. The answer, if these early results hold, will be found not in hype or fear, but in the everyday choices teachers make between the first bell and the last.

Billy Joel closing Long Island motorcycle shop 20th Century Cycles

Billy Joel will be closing 20th Century Cycles, his popular motorcycle shop on Long Island. For the past 15 years, the Oyster Bay shop has showcased the singer's private collection of expensive and rare motorcycles, which he spent decades gathering. Shortly after its grand opening, Joel shared a video about why he wanted to give the community an inside look. "People don't get to see all these kinds of bikes all together in one place," he said. "I actually grew up not far from here, and I'd like to get a little interest going into the town." The closure comes as Joel, 76, is in the middle of selling his Oyster Bay estate and relocating to Florida after being diagnosed with a brain condition. Locals are disappointed the shop is closing down. "It's always cool to sometimes see him coming in or out," Oyster Bay resident Alice Balducci said. "This is one of the prime things to do in Oyster Bay, is to see the motorcycles," resident Stephen Sprachman said. Maalika Mehta remembers meeting Joel at the shop back in 2018 when she was 8 or 9 years old. "He was such a sweet person to talk to," she said. In 2023, a part of the road the shop sits on was named Billy Joel Way. Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino says that won't change even after the shop closes. "While we may be losing this motorcycle museum, we're not losing our love," he said. The shop will remain open on weekends only through the end of August as motorcycle parts are sold off. There's no word yet on when the store will be closing its doors for good, or what will be replacing it.
